What New Order can learn from Duran Duran

I just returned home from the Duran Duran concert in Lousville, Kentucky (keep the snickers down in the back please).  I had last seen them in '88 when they came to summerfest in Milwaukee.  The year before New Order '89 and then Depeche Mode '90.

What struck me was the time and effort that went into delivering a quality peice of art to the punter.  The t-shirts were well designed, the lightshow was top, and the background movies were terrific (Duran Duran goes Japanimation).

Got me thinking about how good a proper New Order American tour would be.  Imagine if they actually sat down and created proper tour shirts, proper posters, contracted Saville to create some animated shorts, and brought back some of their mystique instead of the juvenile hijinks of modern day New Order.

Tony Wilson spoke of respect for the punter which is why New Order always delivered something beautiful.  I guess it's a sad day when Duran Duran delivers a better work of art than New Order.  Rob Gretton must be turning in his grave.

I agree. The video for Krafty was hardly a video like Girls on Film, try as it might. :D

I'm going to see New Order to see them and hear them live not for the eye candy.  If I wanted to see a show I'd gone to the Motley Crue gig or eaten some acid and caught the Butthole Surfers.  The latter have 2 screens behind them with about 6 imagines airing at once--a black and white movie, a nature filme, some geometrical shapes, H-Bomb explosions and a sex change operation all at once.  The former motorcycles, explosions and dwarves.

But to be objective, Wednesday Mrs. Twist and I will be viewing Duran Duran in all its glory.  Yep, $50 for tickets.  Been sitting on these since December.

Most of the Get Ready T-shirts were pretty poor, but I picked up a decent red on black print for the Get Ready European Tour (kind of a 21st Transmission print....radiowaves) with London, Koln and Sweden on the back There's always one decent top, the Temptation one was good, as was Recycle at Reading 98, the Barcode for 93, Concert for 89

As for the big NO on Orange.....there was a similar type one in 87 with orange / brown NO written vertically down the side on a white t-shirt (One of the first Neworder t-shirts I was given by John.....I claimed many more including Finsbury / Substance and G-Mex)

I can just see us all wandering around with a big NO on our T-shirts,

They just need Fook Off on the back and the miserable image of a neworder fan is complete :D

Ok I saw Duran Duran about 2 weeks ago, and yes they did put on a nice show and sounded great. But with them it was more like watching a movie. I had a much better time at the Vancouver New Order concert. My heart wasn't into the Duran Duran concert. I just sat there. I remember thinking about seeing New Order in Oakland, in the middle of the Duran concert.

Lets just say if Duran ever came back, I woundn't go. As I'm already planning to save my money to see New Order next year on their next album tour.

What can New Order learn from Duran? I guess how to over price your ticket.

Two tickets to see Duran2 at the Quad Cities "Mark" were $49.50 USD each plus the TicketBastard charge.  I did ask for "best available" since it was not a general admission.  Bought them back in December when they were the only gig available in my area.  There should be a lot of hot horny birds at this show.

A friend of mine went to the Spokane show a couple weeks ago and said it was quite good. He had seventh row center - actually, we both did but I couldn't make it and had to sell the ticket. Though it was overly polished, he said the sound was exceptional. They're a band I would've liked to have seen once, and then be done with it. I don't need Union of the Snake going through my head like it did 20 years ago.

i saw them back in FEB, mainly because it was the original lineup. i made a decision to not get a ticket until the day of the show and walked up, payed $81 and had a perfect seat in the center above the pit (which as i hate was like 5ft lower than the stage). it was the most i'd ever paid for a single band. most shows i goto range from $8-25 and are in clubs mainly because at 6'8 i like gen admission stuff since i can see over everyone anyway hahah.

i thought that DD did a good job live, the sounded good and i the only gripe i had was the same we have about New Order.. not enough of the older/cooler tracks that seem to have fallen out of favor with the band? but they did throw a bone or two out there with Nightboat and Careless Memories.

ouch though.. these ticket prices just keep doing up and up each year, faster than anything else related to entertainment.

Actually, for accuracy's sake, all five of them are married and have children; Yes even that keyboardist.  Though in 1981 Andy Warhol met them and took a particular 'liking' to Nick Rhodes(Then 19 or 20).

Did Warhol try to hump Nick's leg?

say what you want about duran duran, but you cannot overlook their tonsorial superiority.

They've been digging from their vault.  At Inland Invasion II, the first gig after the reunion, they openned with a song from their first lp.  What thery need to do is never play The Reflex and Wild Boys ever again.

Just caught Duran2 at The Mark, Quad Cities, IL.  Openning band VHS or Beta.  2 hour performance.  Crowd was nuts although I was expecting to see more bras and panties thrown on the stage.  Female backup singer and a sax player on stage most of the show.  They dug deep into their catalog although Union of the Snake and View To A Kill should be retired.  Impressed that they did The Chauffer.  Sound was great and lots of eye candy.  The background animation during Careless Memory was too fookin' funny--Duran2 as cartoon show killing invading ninjas, aliens and Godzilla (see Strongbad Email concerning the LimoZeen Saturday morning cartoon).

Andy Taylor was absent having flown back to England to be with his father.  Father died either yesterday or the day before.  Simon said they had a discussion whether to carry on or wait.  They wanted to keep the momentum of the tour going.

What New Order could learn is that if they play Crystal it would be great if Dawn Zee was with them instead of a tape.

If you believe what you read, Peter Hook a long time ago said "I could never imagine doing what Duran Duran did"....so it's no surprise that Duran Duran is not the stick with which to measure New Order.
