Hopefully now he's got his part-time commiments out of the way for a few years, Hooky can get back to his role as a jobbing musician - I'm looking forward to his hookup with Mani and Andy Rourke (Freebass), and if you've seen the DVD that goes with the Hybrid album in the interview with them they mention they've got more Hooky stuff.

Yeah Freebass did seem to just vanish from view (if they were ever really in view) Did they ever actually perform a gig? I remember when the Freebass singer was "announced" and he ironically looked a bit like Pottsy if I'm remembering right. It seemed a bit of a ludicrous idea for a band, three bassists of their stature. I suppose Hooky's bass would've been the highest sounding, with Mani's deep growl backing it all up. Rourke's bass on The Smith's stuff was usually playing a seperate tune in the background so god knows where he would've gone in the mix.

Didn't Hooky play some Freebass tracks at a few of his DJ sets?

Anyho - I think 'freebass' sounded a top idea.

I was surprised to read Hooky talk about this in a recent interview... he just mentioned he "has" this project, talking about it as if it still exists... so I guess he's just waiting to find some time to do something with them, though it wouldn't be the first time Andy Rourke is involved in a ghost project, do you remember the band which should have featured Aziz from the Stone Roses with Rourke and Joyce from the Smiths?

I thought Rourke and Joyce weren't speaking to each other?

No, there's no problem between them. When The Smiths split the first rumours said Rourke was sacked because he was a junkie but that wasn't the truth of course... he had his problems with smack but the only one who really complained was Morrissey and yet he wasn't sacked because he was already in rehab. Actually it was the other three who were sick of Morrissey, though the one really taking the decision was Marr, the other two still thought it was a bit extreme to sack the lead singer... They tried Roddy Frame from Aztec Camera to replace Morrissey but it didn't work and Marr was already thinking at forming a new band called Sell Your Body which would eventually become Electronic with our Barney. In the following years the huge problem in the former Smiths member has been the lawsuit that Rourke and Joyce made to claim more royalties from Morrissey and Marr, they felt that their share was unfairly low. Rourke settled out of court but Joyce carried on and if I remember correctly won a huge sum. Anyway it seems Rourke and Joyce never had problems between them, but only with Moz and Marr. I remember feeling excited to learn they would have played together again, even in a band with this bloke Aziz which isn't exactly a genius, is he? He was just a session man of the Stone Roses of the last days, but still I was interested in hearing this new band. They played a couple of shows, but nothing was heard from them since then...
