Flop of the year?

OK, seeing as we're all in a "summing-up-2001" kind of mood, what was the biggest disappointment this year?#

For me, its the largely half-arsed new albums by the once mighty Spiritualized and Kid Loco. And on a non-musical tip, it got to be Stoke bottling it in the play-offs for the fourth bloody time. And talking of bloody, I'm off to see the Potters vs. Cardiff tonight!!

Get Ready - not so much the album, more the shit that surrounded it - poor sales, poor chart showing, bad marketing, record company pissing about, crap remixes, poor choice of second single, in fact the whole bleeding despicable shebang. See some other threads for more indepth post-mortems......

2001 was shit overall anyway, to say the least.

Yes, Martin, apart from the actual product, it was really badly bungled, wasn't it?

You could say that the public 'Weren't Ready', or if they were they were ready in 1994. Still, my musical life is far superior with the primitive notion that I have a new set of New Order standards in the collection... next to 'Crocodile Shoe Horns' by Jimmy Nail Hammer.

The problem is the public didn't know there was anything to get ready for, Huntsy. Of course I agree that my world is much richer for having gotten ready.

So what exactly is Death Hole, Huntso?

As a BHA fan, I don't quite know who to cheer for tonight. If you win then that puts more more pressure on us, but if Cardiff win then we'll get our message board swamped with the usual drivel. Funny how we never had any rivalry with Cardiff until we soundly beat them to the Championship last season. Now all we get is messages telling us how much better than us they are.

Oh well, that settles it.....come on you Potters!

Musical disappointment - New Order at Brixton.

Non musical disappointment - Mickey Adams leaving a potential First Division club to join.....a potential First Division club.

Musical disappointment : Radiohead's "I Might Be Wrong" not being a double album, and New Order having the cheek to fart in our faces with Slow Jam.

Other disappointment : King Mark Owen breaking his leg at St.Blazey having scored 17 in his first 13 games of the season :(

Patty Death Hole is Slow down Jack. I think, but that's based on me seeing Death Hole and associating it in my own mind fresh. So I can't guarantee 100% match.

Death Hole sounds like a good name for a song, better than Night Trap surely.

Musically....the full emergence of the dire NU Metal scene to become just about the 2nd most popular genre after cacky boybands/girlbands (S Club excluded of course)

Out of Music...Englands capitulation to Australia in the Ashes in the summer - mainly due to injuries IMO...and realizing that age is finally starting to catch up with me...no more sleepless weekends for Seb Im afraid

I think playing the same set list on the Grrrready tour was a bit of a letdown, i mean we all went to all the gigs in eager anticipation and while we were treated to such beauties such as YSF the only change on the Brixton dates was RUIAD as an encore on thursday.. booh.. must try harder. :(

Old Blue: Cardiff fans really are the biggest gimps on the planet, no? To be honest, I'd really like to stuff the cocky sheep shaggers in fine fashion tonite, but seeing as how it will inevitably kick off big-time I'll be happy to get home alive. I wouldn't want to be a copper at the Brit thi evening....

I think people are a bit down on the "Get Ready" campaign: yes, it should've been "Turn My Way" and not "60mph" as second single, but if the sales weren't what they were for Technique/Republic then its got more to do with Buggering Off For Eight Years Without A Peep than London's campaign. And, despite the dissenters, I thought the Get Ready artwork was some of the most iconic of the year. Though that could be just where I was looking....

Martin, I can see what your saying to an extent, and I thought in the approach to the album, there was a lot of good publicity. The fact that the boyz appeared in just about every music publication is testament to their hard work there. The artwork I thought was excellent.

Where the record company did fuck up was around release date and after. The fact that 60mph came out a month overdue - way after all the promotion had finished was just typical of the bodging. NO not being arsed to appear in their own videos didn't help either - stopped them being able to re-relate to the MTV watching population.

flop of the year ???

  • the hype around this talentless Velvet Underground coverband called The Strokes.
  • the Tool album "Lateralus" pseudo-intellectual music for pseudo-intellectuals
  • New/Nu-Metal...

...and very disappointing was NewOrder playing the same setlist every night on the tour

musical disapp....mmh think think think....The amount of tracks on GET READY.

For the rest its been, musically, a great year as i have seen the Order three times and all three times they were fucking ROCKING. To hell with all those pessimists that keep on complaining about certain tracks or whatever!!:D And come to think of it: i am really pleased with th amount of tracks on GR:lol:

A good point and well made! I actually went as far as taking all the Albion stickers out of my car when we went to Ninian. Certainly not a place where you can wear your colours with pride. It amazes me that at least 100 people were just there to stare at the away fans, and didn't watch a minute of the game. What really took the biscuit was when they started shouting "You cheating English bastard" at Nathan Jones. I mean, have you ever heard a more Welsh sounding name.....

I'm no expert, but I think it's Limp Bizkit/Linkin Park/Slipknot etc.

Dreadfulness.

Actually, Huntsy, I thought you had Slower than Slowest Slowness listed separately, so I was interested in which other title made your least liked list.

Nothing that New Order did dissapointed me this year to be honest. To come back after 8 years with an album like GR was a big and pleasant surprise. And that it did not get the attention it deserved, well who cares...Charts are so full of garbage that personally I do not mind New Order is not in there. Musical disappointments?? About 99% of all music I hear on the radio nowadays...hiphop, R&B, Numetal...

Hi guys!

New/NU-metal is a very trendy word in germany, used by so-called "marketing-strategists" and it includes the worst in rock/metal/rap we've heard all thru the year...so we're talking of Limp Bizkit, Crazy Town, Papa Roach, Linkin Park...and so on...you know what i mean

Cardiff fans - nutters to a (wo)man. I've got quite a soft spot for the Seagulls, ever since you let us do the double over you in our truly dire 89-90 relegation season. AND the celebratory "going down" bash at the Goldstone in May: 4-1 away win, in the sun, on the pitch, on the beer all day - still my fave Potters day out ever!!

...sorry, i don't welcome The Strokes, they're boring, just a lame rip-off of the late seventies movement...well, to be honest, i really do like the gorillaz-album because it sounds really fresh !!!

Flop of the year...definitely has to be the public reaction to Get Ready...of course...the public has never been all that receptive to our heroes....of course maybe that is what makes them so enduring to us...

When I hear all the kids talking about how great Britney, N'sync, Back Street Boys, Slipknot, Limp Dicks, et. al. are, I can just snicker and think to myself, they haven't got a fucking clue!!!

The only Gorillaz songs I've heard, Marco, are Clint Eastwood, which is undeniably appealing, and 19-2000 (is that the right name) which seems of far lower quality.

...i only bought the gorillaz-album because of "clint eastwood"...but i was positively surprised, because it's NOT only songs built around some weird cartoon-characters...it's a great mixture of different styles which fit very well together...but it takes some time to get really into it... absoluteley worth it's money...

cheers.

You know, Damon Albarn seems to have achieved the unthinkable - through Gorillaz, he's only succeeded in making people who otherwise would have hated Blur to go out and buy his records. Sneaky bugger eh?

I've heard loads of folks saying that they despised Blur or had very little time for them, only to add that..."but them Gorillaz songs are pretty cool "

Wonder if these people are aware that Damon's behind this, or do they just go by the cartoon characters that front this project, thinking that they really are the band as such ?- interesting thought however.

but patsy...boys and girls was pretty good, wasn't it???

I only ever bought two of their albums, Jeff, the one with Song 2, and the one with a hospital stretcher on the cover, or is that the same one? Anyway, I don't remember Boys and Girls, unfortunately.

But what I mean is every living person on the planet has heard Song 2, although if you said Blur to them they'd say, What?

actually Patty...I got it backwards...it's girls and boys...and it was on Parklife...which had some dogs (greyhounds if I'm not mistaken) on the cover...I loved the song, but apparently it wasn't big over here...

and you've got it quite right...I think Song 2 is played on commercials, and at every athletic event in the United States, and probably Canada as well...

I've actually done a pissing great re-mix of "Bong 2" on this very computer, using SoundEdit ™ , a very simple overhaul mind - none of your fancy new drumbeats or cliched four-four dancey bollocks like that - it's just played at two very different speeds: snails pace, then absolutely fucking breakneck. The few mates I've played it to have never laughed so much - they found it fucking hysterical. If I could upload it as an MP3 I would do so but being a technology philistine I haven't the faintest clue of how to go about doing this. So you may never get to hear it (or my own truly evil Simpletext version of Radiohead's "Fitter Happier" for that matter....).

The whole "jihad against America"...you know Osama's gotta be pissed that didn't work to his favor.

Musically, GR's poor performance, Amnesiac initally (though it grew on me obviously), Nsync still selling (NKOTB should sue them for every last penny), the MTV-fueled rock-rap hybrid (not enough imagination from them boys, eh)

Bigest letdown of the year has to be the increasing poor taste of the record buying public... when will people discover some taste again? Or are we to be endlessly subjected to more and more boy bands etc and crap dancey shite? I just want to shake people and shout at them when they tell me that they really like the new *hear'say/kylie/nsync/five/sclub7 single... makes me so fecking angry! Grr!

I'm starting to understand Martin more at the moment... he makes a lot of sense...

No, no, I'm not being sarcastic!! Your assesment was spot on. His mother loved the song, realised her surname was Jones and saddled the poor lad for life. He will be 29 in May. He must have got loads off his schoolmates when Bananarama covered it.

Nigel: damn fucking right!! I hate this bloody London-centric country. It should've been in Brum, right? Like, central for everyone. How I laughed at the whinging cockneys when Spurs and the Arse had to - gasp! - travel north for their cup semi. If it was up to me, everyone would be able to declare their own republic and London could just stare up its own arse without bothering the rest of us.

Happy New Year!
