Review from todays free Metro newspaper.

New Order sound strong and confident on eighth studio album, Waiting For The Sirens Call, binding throbbing electro, driving rock, indie and dancefloor into a body of popularist, breezy songs that are solid rather than invigorating. Yet, for a band whose influence is at its zenith, the record sounds surprisingly conservative, with only the popping handclaps and deadpan emotionalism of Guilt Is A Useless Emotion really asserting New Orders prototype electronic dancefloor credentials.

Yes, that review could be placed around all of the definitive NO albums.

Not an unfair review really. I do agree the new album sounds a bit "safe" in places, but I still think it's worth 4 stars because there are no truly duff songs on it as opposed to Get Ready which had at least 3 huge clangers. Glad "Guilt.." got some recognition though, one of the best off the new album for sure. Lyrics are a bit cheesy but the way it's mixed and the heartbeat intro makes it one of the most interesting new things they've done in a long time.

But don't you find that all of the 'best' NO material begins with an indifferent opinion?

It's the never released album tracks that form the heart of the archive.

Not always... Regret and Crystal and the Perfect Kiss are exceptions to that rule...
