Guilty Pleasure of the year (god this is so emabarrassing!)

Okay, time to admit what you wouldn't normally even speak of to friends or family, but because this is the Internet our identities are well protected by a screen door thru which anyone can view our personnal info: What was your guilty pleasure music-wise this year? For me, it has to be Elton John's "I Want Love"-who knew the old bag had it in him to record something worth hearing after so long? Never would admit this anywhere esle, but that's just so catchy...:o :o :o :o

When that video first appeared, Tabsy, I commented here about how much I liked the video, and I got some abuse for that.

I kinda liked the "Lady Marmalade"(s/p?) video with all the chick singers. One exception: Christina looks even more like a crack-whore than normal.

Travis, I thought they were fine until I saw the VH1 story tellers with them. They're like the British equivalent of the backstreet boys, not that I don't mind teenage girls but I don't want to be seen with them at a concert. And I was really disappointed by the new album.

Maybe not the most original thing to come down the pike, but hell, when it comes on the radio, it sure as heck beats listening to Staind, or Nickelbag, or any of those other dime-a-dozen NuMetal bands that pass for 'alternative' these days. I make sure to turn it up so that the neighbors will hear as well.

Here's another vote for The Strokes; such a pleasant change from Fred Durst and his legions from Hell.

Heard the Strokes album for the first time last night. Pleasantly suprised. Gilty pleaseures...listening to lots of CCafe Del Mar comps and getting abuse for it. Or taking a Pete Tong mix CD from 98 with 'Music Sounds better with you' among others and playing it loud when on Holiday.

Oh...liking that Superman Lovers song 'Starlight'..gone off them since the 60mph remix of course

Why were you previously slagging them off? I first visited the Cafe del Mar in 1992, it took me about 4 days to find it, only about 1 in 100 of the people in San Antonio were clubbers in those days, there were only about 3 or 4 bars there with D.J.'s apart from the cheesy ones. Nowadays Savanah and Mambo's music play's over the D.J. at Cafe del Mar,it's criminal.I know us old farts are prone to whinging about how things aren't as good as they used to be,and i'm sure it's still possible to have a great holiday in Ibiza but my first visit to KU now Privilege was awe inspiring, a club with a swimming pool, birds stripping off and swimming in it, I mentioned ages ago I was there when it went on fire, the fire actually salvaged the night, prior to it, it was like playing sardines with cluelss scandanavian dorks, no offence to any scandanavians but they weren't there for the music, just as tourists. the swimming pool was covered over with metal sheeting, so as to cram even more people in. Only when the fire scared some of them off was there any room to dance or anything worth remembering the night for.If you do make it there I'd give it a wide birth.SPACE, and Pacha are much better, DC10 looks good, didn't make it there. I'd advise against staying in Ibiza town,unless you take about £2000.00 spends. It's alright for journos with free access everywhere but there's only the bars overlooking the harbour(£3.00 or £4.00 a drink, you might just spot an obscure D.J.) unless you like very gay bars. Much better to get somewhere nice in San An, close to the 'May' department store near the harbour or towards Cafe del Mar,Beware if you go further into the centre, like I did once some bizarre squady, brought out a huge stereo and started playing some weird loyalist marching band music, and no-one else thought it was strange. San An has enough bars to have a good night out, open till about 4am. if You've enough stamina for a club everynight Ibiza town might be better or Playa den Bossa where SPACE is, no decent bars but it also has 'Bora Bora' beach, I stayed there last time and and as I walked along the beach from the far end where our hotel was, I couldn't keep the smile of my face as I got closer and felt the Bass pumping out.

Sounds superb Hank. I previously thought chill out was just boring whale noises. Youre preaching to the converted now though.

I have to say, I don't like any guitar based band from the last ten years the Strokes and the White Stripes may be better than Travis, that doesn't make them Hendrix, Led Zep or Stone Roses, I just can't dig retro.Anyone know a band to prove me wrong?

i can see where youre coming from hank, retro is everywhere; be it guitar bands, Rnb, dance music....its inescapable. but as barney once said if you cant be innovative, you can at least be good. and thats exactly what the strokes and the von bondies and the white stripes and the hives and the dirtbombs are...only a fool would think them as significant as hendrix. theyre just fun bands that are good at what they do. the overenthusiastic nme patronage isnt all that suprising either, seeing as the nme even supports uk garage these days. while i wish the retro thing had never got going (damn the roses and the las)it was pretty inevitable; many bands cant help but wear their influences on their sleeves.

Stone Roses,undoubtedly had very retro influences shining through the debut album,but for me there success was taking it somewhere,which up till One Love they managed,are there any funky ass bands out there? I get tired of checking out these new bands,I mean the White Stripes are probably the best sounding I've heard and they only use two instruments, how the fuck are you gonna rival Kool and the Gang like that? obviously that's probably not their intention, but I wish someone would at least try and acknowledge some funk,it's all so damn white ass, middleclass,you could probably have done it without pyschedelic drugs having been discovered.

well funks pretty retro itself, and lets face it so is indie-funk. still its ripe for a comeback. i reckon there must be some funky guitar bands around; its a matter of searching for them. i can only think of one at the mo, a girl group called brassy, who are an amalgam of funk, old skool hip hop, jangly indie, shouty elastica style indie. now that sounds promising doesnt it? only problem is that while theyre a really fun live band, they still have a way to go before theyre as good as their description suggests. still theyre only on their first album.

Hey VG! Brassy - now they're one of Manchester's great lost bands. Know them by association only cos one of the bands I play with use the same rehearsal room as they do. But some of their stuff indeed does kick ass - and remember when they used to get compared to Elastica when the latter were huge? How that must rankle now - but seeing as the posh one's mob have now hit the crapper and reduced to bringing out pointless tuneless lo-fi shite masquerading as rare limited editions or Steve Lamacq sessions - they surely must have the last laugh. Did you say you have their only LP to date - "Got It Made" ??

i've seen brassy live - they're shit!!!! i can't think of one nice thing to say about them, except that their set wasn't very long.

1. watching and enjoying "pop idol"

3. fancying the following people; mark radcliffe(not too embarassing); louis theroux; paul morley (ugghh whats wrong with me)..i think ill stop now.

sarah, first time i saw brassy i too thought they were a bit crap, but second time they were much much better, partly cos they were getting a good response from the audience i reckon.

martin, as for "got it made", on the whole i think its pretty good, seems to go down very well at parties. but if i`m giving it my undivided attention i can find it a bit samey, a few of the tracks are just not distinctive enough. and the production is a bit lifeless and flat too; otherwise though a good record.

Well, most of my mates know I'm no fan of RnB music.... but I must admit to have compiled a CD recently of those chart hits songs that I ( privately ) liked..... It's actually very unlike-me at all. I don't listen to radio or don't give a damn about chart hits. But I must admit sometimes there are songs that caught my eyes and I think they are quite alright.... Well my CD compilations consist of All Saints ( gasp! )Destiny's Child ( yikes! ) even Britney ( i know someone's gonna 'spear' me... ) and including the odd Dido ( she's classy, I thought ) Anyway, have you guys heard Mary, Mary's 'Shackles ( Praise You ) ? I thought that song really ROLL...
