Just got Muffman's latest goodwill package, a *cracking* live show from '84. The full track listing is Sooner Than You Think, AOC, Blue Monday (probably the best version bar the original), In A Lonely Place (I can't help but laugh when Barney's haranguing steve to play faster) and Temptation. Yeah - it's the Saturday Live sessions - and the Temptation version (my favourite song of all-time) is the best I have ever heard - Montreaux 93 was good - Reading 89 even better - but for me - nothing beats this version;)
As for the other songs - fuck me - was Barney having a 'mare, always reminds me of the interview when Barney used to go into the studio with a white "science teachers" jacket and a whip - saying "play it properly you Bastards or you's get whipped" Always cracks me up reading that interview - then the stupid bastard himself fucks up several times live on air - must have been well uptight that day
I listened to that Saturday Live broadcast on the Radio as I was stuck in traffic in Portsmouth, (bloody Pompey !) having just arrived early for the Portsmouth Guildhall gig the next night. Brilliant the next night, one of the best gigs I've been to. Cracking version of Face Up and a good atmosphere apart from the obligatory punch-up.
New Order were in the middle of a UK tour when this was recorded and broadcast live as part of "Rock Around The Clock", a BBC music-a-thon.
They had to travel from Corwall to London, and got stuck in traffic for 3 hours. As a consequence, they only arrived at the studio 25 minutes before broadcast. One of their synths had packed up, and they couldn't play what they had planned. Also, it was the first time they had played live in such a situation, and none of the group were happy about listening to themselves through the puny BBC supplied headphones. (If my memory serves, Barney discarded his pretty quickly). As you can hear, some of this tension comes across on the recording!!
The following night in Portsmouth they were, as Tim stated, brilliant. I was wearing a t-shirt with the Factus8 cover on it that night, and got hauled round to the stage door by a heavy who told me that Barney wanted to go on stage wearing a New Order shirt. Being the lightweight 15-year-old that I was, my shirt was obviously too small. Shame! He actually came on wearing a Psychic TV one.
I next saw that heavy wading in to sort out the fight!!
