I know nobody on here likes the Manics, and that they are "overrated bandwaggoneering sloganeering Welsh gimps who struck it lucky" (NOT my personal view but a quote from a certain music press publication), but where is that Edwards bloke ? This coming Feb 1st he's officially dead. Anyone give a shite ?

How many years is it on Feb 1st then?

He's probably havin' the time of his life in Goa. Still.

May have been Severn Bridge, but I'm convinced that he is still alive and better in another country. Can't forgive the bastard for the way he shat on his family and friends though Wouldn't have hurt him just to ring them and tell them he was OK.

Thing is Tim, if he is alive chances are he did ring and tell them. Its all a big conspiricy theory... nah, its all bollox really innit! Couldnt give a bobbins anymore... i did years ago, was really upset when he went missing, my mate Dennis was like their hugest fan, and he was distraught. I just reckon that they've made a packet out of him going, so the rest of the manics probably arent too bothered anymore....

Richey, wherever ever you are, i hope you are happy mate!

My ex lives in Blackwood, and knows the Bradfield family well (I still get free tickets for MSP shows). It's no cover-up or anything (it had been speculated that he had been home for years), they really have no clue what has happened.

I think he probably did jump to be honest. the group have never been the same musically since. Richey seemed to give them a real purpose to their music,to me they just come over overblown and unimaginative now.

Yeah, sorry I know he only worte the words - I sort of meant in terms of their musical direction (encompassing words and lyrics). Ian Curtis neevr wrote any of the music for JD according to an interview I read with Barney - and I think NO lost focus with 'Movement' They of course managed to reinvent themselves for PCL - which is something the manics have never successfully done.

fuck up's like Richey Manic and Kurt Cobain piss me off. first of all, the manics hurt my ears. i don't live with aggression and tension so i have no place for it in my music. we don't need anymore rock bands anyway. Richey is/was a pathetic, self-centered, attention starved moron. slashing arms like he was sid vicious...boring, it's been done before assface. no offence to liv etc...it's just shamefull that we place so much respect in people who don't show respect themselves. suicide is not painless. I was living in London when that sad cunt went missing and i couldn't really understand the whoopla. the manic's were/are not that good. they just got tons of press and didn't have enough time for the same press to put them back where they belong. the media are the real criminals of the 21st century. i fucking hate the media. richey manic next on behind the music.

Take it you dont like Joy Division then? Is Ian Curtis one of those losers? Liv

i like some joy division but not all. i didn't get to experience the media's reaction to ian's suicide but from what i gather, it wasn't as big a circus as Kurt and Richey. ian's fate is truly sad. he had epilepsy right? richey and kurt had drug habits. i intentionally left ian out of my rant because i think his circumstances are different.

Yeah, poor Richey - nobody will probably ever know will they? One fucked-up guy. Fighting back against a fucked up world. Did like some Manics songs though - through the years, not just when they finally went big. But they ARE an acquired taste and you simply have to select thru their vast back catalogue to enjoy the best stuff. Mind you, they did look like jerks when they first appeared in the press all of eleven years ago looking like 12-year old thrift-store New York Dolls/Clash wannabies. You had to laugh. But they seem to have stuck around since and become "respectable" (yukky term I know) - so fair play to them, even if their music is totally pedestrian and bland as it has been for the past few years.

Mind you, on a completely different subject, the 1st of Feb 2002 is also the day Stereolab [GODLIKE!!!! :jump: :jump: ] get to do a one-off gig with a few other friends at London's Royal Festival Hall. I hope to be able to get down there and catch them. Are you willing, Buster??

My ex lives in Blackwood, and knows the Bradfield family well (I still get free tickets for MSP shows). It's no cover-up or anything (it had been speculated that he had been home for years), they really have no clue what has happened.

S'funny Tim, one of my best friends, Sylvia, who comes from Blackwood also (born into a coalmining family so resolutely working class), has NEVER heard of the Manics, even when I told her about them, so that's weird. But a few years ago, Sylvia married a Canadian and emigrated to Alberta (Edmonton) . And last year she went thru a very bad patch as she split from him. I got an Xmas card of Sylvia a couple of weeks ago with a letter telling me the most tragic news - four months after their split, he killed himself. And he didn't even leave a will. What a way to be left in the shit... that is so tragic... So currently, in this already ten-times shite year we've had (like me losing two relatives in the space of six months also amongst other general awfulness)....my thoughts are with Sylvia and how she will cope with this terrible loss. Now you can see why I've been so up and down lately these past few weeks - trying to take stock and make sense of it all and questioning my own standing in the scheme of things. I know this is a digression from the subject of Richey, but the connection happened to be Blackwood so it just prompted me to mention this in passing.... But anyway - I'd better shut up now.

From everything I've heard, he's out in Vegas with Elvis and Jim Morrison...:D

It seems like he did off himself, which is tragic. Not familiar with the Manic's stuff (my coz has all the albums if I ever wanna really check them out), so I can't say whether he was a "pretentious fuck-up" or not

Richey did NOT have a drug habit. He had suffered from alcohol problems twelve months prior to his disappearance, but no drugs.

Yeah, no drugs for Richey...I read that somewhere.

Brian, As for Ian Curtis, if you are roping Richey Edwards and Kurt Cobain into one category, then why not Ian? Essentially they all killed themselves and in your eyes are all losers. The epilepsy may well have been a factor in Ian's suicide, but it was certianly not the only thing that led him to take is own life. And for one, it shouldn't be given as a reason why his suicide was any different to others, the medication he was taking, his unsatisfactory homelife, his extra-marital affair, the stress of being a father etc etc etc all contributed to the way he must have been feeling, and therefore put him into the same catergory as the others you mentioned. As for the media, no, Ian's death didnt get the same attention as say Cobains did, mainly because he wasnt as well know, in Barney's own words Joy Division were a "cult" band. In recent years Ian's death has gained its own cult status, the media have created not only a myth but an almost god like image of Ian...take the "Atmosphere" video for example and all the fuss that created....

Perhaps you should think about the reasons why people commit suicide rather than just judging people. One of my good friends when i was a teenager killed himself, and i certainly dont think he was a loser.

Ok, so my rant is over for now, sorry if i seem like im jumping down your throat, but it just got on my tits thats all (and if you ever meet me, you'll know what a mammoth task it is getting on my tits! ;) lol)
