TRUE FAITH - A TRIBUTE TO NEW ORDER

Hey!

After a very long and hard week of work, I just came home late tonight after seeing Nutcracker (which I always thought was a frightening title for any average guy, but that's another question) and I found a very nice little surprise in my mailbox: my copy of True Faith - A tribute to newOrder.

I didn't even listen to it yet because I'm excited about the package itself -- the design is great and it was all done in a very professionnal way! The booklet is very nice -- not only does it have NewOrderOnline mentionned two times in it, but Nicolas and I even have our names on it as well! Also, there is a list of names of the fans supporting the project, and the first one on the list is our good friend François-Marc Loze.

Now, I'll have to listen to it! :)

Here is my review of TRUE FAITH: a tribute to newOrder.

First of all, the overall package was nicely done. The booklet is nice and the overall design as well. The best of every tribute albums I've seen so far.

Now, regarding the content: as many of you were afraid of, this is a SYNTHPOP cover album. Most of the bands featured on this album are bands who are trying to break through the musical industry or just doing it for fun. Do not expect big names in there. Also, several of the vocals are cack (I'm using a Brit expression without even knowing it's true meaning -- great). I mean, they're kinda bad or lame, but some others are very good. So, with that in mind, here is my song by song review:

True Faith by INTACT feat. Robert Enforsen: Nice production. The voice is ok. Sounds weird with an american accent though (or is it?). Easy to listening to. Of course, the song is so good by itself that if you listen to this version, you will start thumping your feet without even realizing after a while. So yes, I like this one.

Bizarre Love Triangle by Days of Fate: Once again, I think the production on this one is above average for this kind of album. As a matter of fact, I think this track could surprisingly do well in clubs! The guitar part is very catchy the way it was done, and the chorus is very catchy as well. A sing-along song version. I like the voice as well quite a lot! Maybe one of the best covers of BLT ever done. Of course, I don't expect the New Order fans to be objective about this one -- but if you forget about New Order for a moment and try to listen objectively to this version, then you may find out that it was very well done. Bravo.

Confusion by Seabound: My first impression was a VERY BAD ONE because the intro is made by New Order's original sound samples of the same song. Not a very difficult way to cover a song, I told myself. But at 15 seconds into the song, a very cool robotic voice saying "CON-FU-SION!" comes in and catches your attention, and what is following that comes out to be quite good actually. I believe that those who like the original version (or 1987 one) will most certainly like this cover version, which stays true to the original version but adds a nice edge to it.

Thieves Like Us by Shades of Gray: Can't really stand this one. A 130 or 140 BPM techno version filled with vocoded robotic voices is not exactly suited for Thieves Like Us in my opinion, but then again, I'm sure there are people out there who will find this one interesting. But I think they killed both the feeling in the song and the melody as well.

Ceremony by Atlantic Popes: Not sure about this one. I think the keyboards are bad. Doesn't compare to The Echoing Green's fantastic version that came out earlier this year. And the voice is absolutely terrible. Did I mention that Atlantic Popes are a german duo? Because the german accent is quite noticeable on that one... I must say that it makes it all quite funny and entertaining. A bit kitsch. And I'm ashamed to admit that it is VERY HARD not to stomp your feet or sing along on this one. I'm sure Allen Jarvis would like Ceremony even if it was played by a bunch of monkeys, so with that in mind, this version passed the test, but with a mark of 60. :)

Love Vigilante by Hungry Lucy: no, the mispelling is not mine -- it's written "Vigilante" without the "s". It wouldn't be a good tribute album without it, would it? But it doesn't matter, because this may be THE BEST COVER VERSION ON THE ALBUM. I like it quite a lot. It's sang by a female with a very very sweet and cute voice, and the version is very calm & quiet & sweet & atmospheric with nice piano. HL's bio says they also did in the past covers of Depeche Mode's Blue Dress and the Pet Shop Boys' Jealousy. Very very good in my opinion. A+. Bravo.

Temptation by Invisible Limits: Once again, very true to the original. Nice keyboards. Female voice. Very good I think.

Blue Monday by Wave in Head: Yet another version. Yawn. What can I say? I can't really stand the voice of the singer on this one, but then again I can't really say it's bad. But I tend to skip it, just because I'm sick of Blue Monday covers, so my judgement is affected accordingly probably.

Perfect Kiss by ParadoxxThis is the kind of synthpop version I run away from usually. Female vocals. The keyboards are kind of bad. Not a very good production. And they added additionnal vocals who goes like this: "why did you leave me BAAAAAABYYYYY ?". Could have done without. Sorry, Paradoxx. The exit is down there.

Every Little Counts by Equatronic: Nice female vocals. Very annoying noises in there which are ruining the version in my opinion. Too bad, because it has good elements as well. But I will probably be skipping that one too. It gets hard for the ears.

Vanishing Point by Provision: I think my old Pentium 200 Mhz could come up with better keyboard noises without even been pluggued to a keyboard. THAT SOUNDS VERY BAD. Was there a sale at Wal-Mart for Casio toy keyboards? Who decided to keep THIS GUY to sing on this one? It's godawful! And what was the point of shouting "VANISHING POINT!!!!" at the end? Cheese world, ladies and gentlemen.

Shellshock by D'Woolve: Another embarassing moment I think. The voice might be a bit better, but the production on this track is CRAP. Pure crap. Personally, I wouldn't have kept this track for the CD -- it doesn't meet the quality standards of the other tracks. It doesn't sound professional at all. This is a pure case of track skipping. Find me an axe.

Your Silent Face by Persona: After 4 bad tracks, the quality seems to fall back in place. This one is a lot nicer to listen to, even if the song is based, once again, on below average keyboards/sound equipment. Nothing much to add, but maybe to say that it's an ok version after all.

1963 by Dark Distant Spaces: Didn't like it the first minute, but I was happily surprised by the end of the song! Not bad at all. It's a 125-130 BPM version. Nice sounds, nice keyboards. Stays true to the original and enhances it, even. The voice of the singer is not really good, but I can live with it. I would have wished for a woman to sing on this one. At the end, the singer changes the lyrics for "I will always feel for you" (instead of "feel free").

Huh, the problem usually with this sort of humor is that you have to know about the cultural references being made in that type of show, otherwise you don't get the jokes, and being a french canadian, it makes it harder for me. I'm even surprised you like it yourself, since it seems to be very British in terms of cultural references!

By the way, did I ever tell you I'm a David Letterman fan?

To be honest, you could certainly live without it, but I would also certainly recommend it to New Order collectors. But I do suggest that you think about it based on the fact that Nicolas and I have both our names in the booklet and that NewOrderOnline is mentionned twice! ;)

Besides, all the profits are going to the Red Cross.

As for tribute albums in general, I stay put with my original comments: I think that "Re: Movement", the Japanese tribute album, has several VERY INTERESTING covers. You can listen to the tracks of this album in the covers audio section of this site.

By the way, don't you have a BOXING DAY as well in the U.S. of A. the day following christmas? What kind of deals do you get in record shops? The usual deal here, started by HMV and followed by almost every other store is that you buy 3 CDs and the fourth one (the less expensive of the lot, of course) is FREE. Any type of deal like that in Dallas? That free CD might be the New Order tribute, so if you LOATHE it, you can always tell yourself that you got it for free after all.

If I'd have to come up with a compilation of the best covers of New Order songs ever done, Hungry Lucy's Love Vigilante(s) will most probably be on the list.

The choice would still be hard though because there are several other good versions of that song done by other bands!

I just got a copy of This Tribute in the mail today. I got it off of ebay. I was pretty surprised to open it up and seeing the names of our favorite webmasters!

After listening to it, I have to say, this is my favorite tribute album so far. I'm aways a sucker for some sappy synth-pop. especially the covers of Temptation by Invisible Limits and Love Vigelantes by Hungry Lucy.

Nice release from synthphony records!
