Is it only my newly purchased CD, or do you also notice a horrible and a very audible *click* during the first second of 'Who's Joe?' ?

Nope, my CD seems pretty much click-free and I'm normally hyper-sensitive about such things. Sounds like you may have a dud.

I definitely hear the click! Do we have duds or are they all like this? You can only really hear it up loud.

No...

Yes, the whole start of it sounds rough to me.

See my poll on bells in Who's Joe.

Haven't noticed the one on Who's Joe but Krafty has a nasty click several milliseconds behind the point where Hooky's bass comes in. It's definitely audible and is more than like the result of a bad edit or digital clip while mixing rather than in the mastering. I can't believe somebody let this one slide.:nonono:

Thanks for the comments.

I guess it can be either a defective batch at the manufacuring plant, or perhaps that's how it was submitted to the label (G'd forbid).

In any case I have returned my copy to the shop for replacement (not before ripping it to itunes). Every other copy they had in stock has the same click. The CD matrix on the surface reads "0825646220229 V.01"... Seems strange about the V.01, might be worth looking into (?)

Anyway, I left it there and grabbed the new Moby instead.

Will wait for the US version for now, I'm really curious about the sound there.

If it really is an intended sound, I think it is going to be on every copy.

Tell me about Turn. Did they fix that horrible out of tone at 2:02/2:03?

could be Hooky turning on his amp.

Is it the same click noise you hear when you go to the Warner Bros. NO website?

Yes there's that click of someone plugging in a guitar.

I hope its not the same click that was on the promo. That one is definitly not on my Australian version of the album.

I've listened again, several times, and I hear no click. I had hoped I would, since it might fit into my theory (the click of a coffin lid being closed).

What I do hear is the very slightest awkwardness when the music starts. The transition from no-sound to sound is not smooth.

The click is the sound made by the mechanism of the ships clock just before the first strike of the ship's bell.
It's bound to be there, if you think about it.

That would be nice. I'll pretend I hear it.

You're very kind. If you could see your way clear to pretending to detect the faint whirr of the chime mechanism, I would be very grateful.

In return, I would be happy to feign perception of a creaking hinge shortly before the click.

Trade?

In fact, sir, I need to listen to everything again in light of your brilliant idea that it's a ship's bell. This insight could change my whole view of the album. In particular, of course, I need to listen to the first fifteen seconds of track 1. It's possible that I won't need to pretend.

Yeah iv'e never noticed the click before but yes there is one on my Aussie version.

Japanese version definitely has the click...

My copy has it, as does my promo. Also the advance promo has it, only worse. It's almost like they tried to "fix" it on the proper release.

It seems that only the UK copies are click-free, and all other versions have that click...

can someone with a UK copy and another version check this out. I only have the Japanese one and still wait for the EU version.

I've got the UK version, bought from Sainsburys for £9.79. (I'm no mug spending £12.99 at rip-off HMV). I can hear a tiny little click in the first second...if I put my head next to the speaker. Thankfully that's not my normal position for listening to music. Wouldn't have noticed it otherwise. Wish I'd never read this thread now. Maybe you pay more at HMV if they've removed the click.

They should've got Bernard to "whoop" over it then we'd never know.

Now have my French one. Same code no as the UK one and...

NOClick!

Now I'm jealous. Anyone want to trade? Am .mp3 of the "with click" version would be gratefully received.

Definatley. I'll just double check on my system at home that there's no click. These headphones might not be picking it up.

I don't know which one's from France and which one's from UK. I've mixed them up and they look identical.

Right, sorry about this...

My French and UK versions both have the click.

It's hardly intrusive thought is it?

Jesus, sometimes I think you people read a bit to much into all of this.

Well that settles it. It's supposed to be there.

The question now is what does it mean?

The volume of the click is significant. This is not symbolic of anything, just encourages the listener to buy high quality reproductive equipment, turn the volume up and hold his head close to the speakers. This is obviously the correct way to listen to this LP, regardless of what the neighbours might think.

As we know, there must also be a metaphorical intent in the choice of a click (rather than, say, another bell).

A snapping twig – we are being approached in the silent forest. A light is switched on – sudden illumination in a darkened room. Snapping of fingers - ATTENTION, LISTENER!

Anyone got phone numbers for Pat, Hunt and DC? We need them online to debate this.

I confess I have not had the opportunity to listen for the click in light of Big's latest insight (I'm at work after all).

In a previous post I noted that all that I heard was a rather jarring and awkward transition from no-sound to sound. But I trust Big's ears. If he hears it, it's there.

Thus, turning to the interpretative question, when I interpreted the bell as a funeral bell, I thought the click might be the click of a coffin closing, or the click of the church door being softly closed by someone arriving late for the funeral and not wanting to draw attention to himself.

Now that Big has revolutionized our interpretation of the entire album by having the insight that the bell is in fact a ship's bell, obviously the interpretation of the click must change as well.

A reading of the click as a light being switched on certainly makes a great deal of sense.

I am slightly less favorably inclined toward the view that it is a twig snapping in the forest, but that reading unquestionably has its charms as well.

I think I've exhausted my allotted time. Thank you all.

Frankly, Patrick, I am disappointed. I came to this thread with the express intention of disagreeing with you, in order to introduce an element of conflict. Unfortunately, there is not one thing in your post that with which I could disagree. Good work, sir!

I am fond of my ‘twig’ idea, thank you for not dismissing it. It’s an example of my belief that there can be more than one meaning to some things. If the sound evokes the sense of fear that one would feel if, alone in a forest on a dark night, a twig was heard snapping close behind in only 1% of listeners, it may be deemed to have served its purpose.

Well, Big, I don't know that I'm disappointed you didn't actually disagree, but I'm sure disagreement will appear once others return from their various pursuits.

I will wait until I receive the Odyssey materials I've ordered before speculating about where in that work a twig snapping in the forest might best fit.

However, as I believe I've mentioned before, I also detect elements of ROTK in WFTSC, and there are certainly ample occasions for snapping twigs there.

I neglected to respond to your finger-snapping alternative. I like that also. As with the light being switched on, it would be very appropriate as a way to begin a work.

However, one additional virtue of the twig-snapping view is that it is not so conventional a sign of a beginning. But that itself would be appropriate for a work modeled on ancient epics, where the convention was to begin "in medias res," in the middle of things.

My time is up. Next contestant.
