WFTSC is better as a whole, but no track on WFTSC is better than Crystal or Primitive Notion.

A short but sweet rant from THE member of the Green and White Party. Don't forget kids....5th May:thumb:

Still sucks Shug

And I didn't know you celebrated Cinco de Mayo.

Getting Things Appropriate and The Sirens' Cheese both feature the bands worst songs to date, which is odd, as it also boasts some of their best songs to date.

The good: WFTSC, Crispal, Turps etc. etc.

The bad: Slow Butter I Made it patently obvious to your Soap The song we don't mention

The ugly: Rock the Toilet Seat

Seemingly, all other NO albums (except Mole Hunt, which was sent to the British Museum for further analysis in '83) have a fairly consistent level of quality.

I think you are overly generous to PC&L, H. Highest highs, lowest lows.

Can you elaborate on these damning lows on PC&L, P?

The obvious one is We All Stand.

I personally don't care for the intro to 5 8 6.

I confess it's been quite some time since I listended to the tracks just before LMA.

Yes, I think we all deserve a proper explanation.

Don't rush though, DC doesn't sleep until dawn.

I will probably be either stoned or exiled for this, but YSF does absolutely nothing for me.

I think music can sometimes be about contrast and dischord. The sense of anticipation as 586 comes rumbling in is heightened for me by the intro.

The intro to 5 8 6 bothers me far less than WAS.

I was going to write something in support of We All Stand but failed to form the words.

WFTSC has no "flow" as an album.

1.) the first two songs start off with "hey ___, what you doing" as the opening lyrics!

2.) "working overtime" just feels so out of place at the end of the album.

3.) it's got the dreadful duo of "jetstream" and "guilt..." back to back! egads.

i will defend Get Ready until the day of my death as my favorite NO record. there's more of a cohesive flow on that album, and a more consistent sound. true, it's rockier and more guitar based, but that's what i like.

also, i invite everyone to listen very carefully to GR... preferably through headphones. listen for the subtle use of sequenced synth and electronic percussion parts. much more cleverly used throughout the whole album than on WFTSC. on WFTSC rock guitar moments, they resort some some synth strings here and there, but not much else. and on the more electronic songs, the synth instruments tend to sound a bit cheesey in my opinion.

heck, i'll even go as far as saying Hooky has more interesting and memorable bass lines through out GR than WFTSC.

i'm sure my rant is falling on deaf ears since everyone here seems to hate Get Ready. oh well. :banghead:

I'm with you on this one Hank.

I love 5-8-6, in all its glory. The opening brims with excitement for what's to follow. I never understood why others bagged it so.

We All Stand is probably the weakest moment on the disc but that's saying something because it's such a quality album. There's still something pure about it, it's a counterpoint to other upbeat tracks on the album and it's got this dark sense of forboding too, which I like.

I wouldn't say I hate GR. I love three of the tracks: 1, 3, and 9. The rest bore me.

Counterpoint was one of the words I had in mind for the unformed point I was struggling to make.

I will try to listen to WAS again sometime soon in response to this valiant defense of it.

But you can't just listen to WAS Pats, you have to listen to it in context of the entire album.

I suppose it draws comparison to your ITYS musings.

Good point, DC, in light of my tentative hypothesis about concept albums. WO might have been an even better example to cite. I will try to make time this weekend to perform that exercise.

I totally agree Charles. In 6 months time WFTSC will exit the album charts. Maybe it should have been titled "Hey Now, What are New Order Doing?". I think people are just so hyped up about the new album that they cant see any wrong in it.

Whos Joe? - would have been called Hey Joe, if Jimi Hendrix hadnt got there first. Is an ok song but a bit messy.

Hey Now, What You Doing? - Is for me the best track on the album and the one I can see being a corker live.

WFTSC - i get bored halfway through as it just follows the same pattern throughout. The interesting verses dont compensate for an uninteresting and bland chorus.

Krafty - short for Kraftwork? Definately one of the better tracks. But still pretty predicatible territory for NO.

I Told You So - is absolutely brilliant. It goes off at a tangent but it works really well. Got a great vibe about it and its different to anything NO have done before.

Morning Day and Night - is alright.

Dracula's Castle - a mess, over produced, lame chorus and everything but the kitchen sink chucked in.

Jetstream - quite good, ruined by opening 2 lines by Barney.

Guilt Is a Useless Emotion - superb verse, terrible bridge ("Van Gogh", "than gold", "then go"???), and average chorus. Should have been so much better.

Turn - fantastic, more natural sounding song. Will stand the test of time.

Working Overtime - not very good. Barneys vocals just dont suit the Stooges guitar style of song. A poor closer.

Get Ready has 5 excellent tracks at the start. Then 2 dodgy middle tracks and then 3 good tracks at the end.

Yes, I know not many will agree with me, and think Im over critical, but thats only because I love New Orders output from 1981-1993. I guess they were miles ahead of the game in this era and now everyones caught up. Just like what happened to Kraftwork.

At the time, I liked Get Ready - with the exception of RTS. I was lucky enough to get a preview of the record when I saw them in LA on the last date of Area One (thanks to the stranger who gave me the burned disc in the front row) and it had a different track order than the US release that came out months later. I would have preferred it if Player in the League & Sabotage replaced RTS and RW

WFTSC is definitely a return to form. I really did miss the prominance of the synths. I think Barney's lyrics are better this time out (although rhyming Document with Continent is a bit sketchy) and with the exception of Working Overtime I play the whole thing through with no skips.

Working OT has no business being at the end. I feel like it got tacked on and it doesn't fit the rest of the tracks. And I think Morning Night & Day sums up my life from 99-03 after my divorce. Thanks Barney, Hooky, Steve and Phil!

I prefer Sirens to Get Ready. I don't agree with some of the outside reviews I've read where the reviewer said NO has run out of ideas, and/or the new material was just 're-hash'. To me, Sirens IS what New Order sounds like, moreso than Get Ready. I don't think it's re-hash just because a band sounds like themselves. It's a silly criticism if you think about it. The new U2 faced similar criticism (though the problem with that album is the songwriting).

No New Order album has ever been 'perfect' to me (ok, maybe Technique), and the new album even has a few songs that I just don't like (Jetstream, Guilt, Working OT). Regardless, a lot of the new songs are excellent, and I can't stop playing them. I don't know what it is, but Hey Now just rocks, and I play that song constantly, more than Turn (another great one) and WFTSC, the two more popular favorites on this forum. Krafty may not be anything mind-blowing or groundbreaking, but it's a much more satisfying single to me than Crystal, if a comparison needs to be made.

I like GR, but it takes a back seat to Sirens.

Good to see someone else heard "Van Gogh."

WFTSC does not have that knock you on your ass rockin' bastard like Crystal. Nor the go for broke Primative Notion. But I think WFTSC has a more mature sound and over all is a better album even if none of its songs are NO classics/standouts.

WFTSC is a better album than Get Ready. I don't think Get Ready has any songs that equal the strength of WFTSC or Turn. Also, Who's Joe and Hey Now take the guitar-centered approach of Get Ready and improve it. I Told You So, while not as much a radical departure as some have claimed, is something in a different vein that provides enjoyment rather than disappointment (them is rhyming words in Bernard's book).

I think the weaker tracks on WFTSC are those that are most similar to the synth-driven classic New Order sound (Dracula's Castle, Guilt). These are the two that sound most like New Order repeating themselves (yes, I recognize that most bands have their own signature sound that is evident on all their albums).

While I would not make a significant distinction between Low-life, Technique, and WFTSC, I'd place Get Ready below these albums in overall quality.

Honestly...i dont understand a lot of you, "Get Ready" has an amazingly fresh sound, and it was an extremely strong return to form for a band that hadnt put out an album in 8 years. "Crystal," "Primitive Notion," "Someone like you," "Turn my way," AND "Vicious Streak"...the album was phenomenal...ive never heard new order do another song like vicious streak, that might be my favorite on the album. Sirens Call has some fantastic tracks, like "who's joe," "hey now what you doing," "sirens call," "draculas castle,"....but as an album, it has less flow then Get Ready.

I think it's a bit early to compare yet; it takes some time to appreciate a New Order album. For me Primitive Notion is the favourite track; that's what New Order is about. Maybe Turn will "grow" on me the same way. Time will tell.

Personal opinion respected of course :thumb: But alot of people seem to be reporting that GR flowed badly as an album (Rock The Shack followed by Someone Like You? Doesn't work!) and that WFTSC flows alot better. There seem to be no real clangers on WFTSC actually requiring the listener to get up and hit the 'skip' button. I notice you detail GR's best tracks but ignore even a mention of the really awful (IMO) ones like RTS, Slow Jam and the mediocre Close Range. Not to mention the band putting misplaced faith in 60 MPH to do well as a single. That's 4 out of 10 tracks pretty rubbish. You could boil the rest down to a "really great E.P." but GR just doesn't seem to cut the mustard as a truly great New Order LP.

Ally.

Im still listening to WFTSC, and i hope ill get backed up on this, NO albums do need a few listens to appreciate in full. However, i havent been able to stop playing Guilt is a useless emotion! This track is seriously up there with anything off Techniquein my opinion. Im sure in 2 years everyone will say how great the album was, i would personally say its overall better thanGet Ready, maybe cos the band are, like they say, more relaxed in each others company now.

Strangeley enough, GR has grown on me more over time. It's taken a while but, like a good wine, it's suddenly become fuller in flavour .... I never thought much of it when it came out but even now the worst tracks like Someone Like You, Rock the Shag and Slow Ham arent quite so grating as they were. Overall it's a pretty strong record, rockier than usual but that isn't such a crime. The new one i just can't get into half of it - it's so ...... all over the place. The ones that really don't do it for me are the ones where they try to sound like someone else and fall flat on their arses - Told You So and Jetstream especially.
