I think WFTSC has some brilliant tracks on it (Hey Now What You Doing, I Told You So, Turn) but the album as a whole still sounds a bit forced for me (and Ive played it to death). I played Get Ready for the first time in ages and its brilliant, more natural.

PS I cant see where people are coming from with comparions between Technique and WFTSC. Technique was sublime and perfect pop, whereas WFTSC is much more edgy.

Dammit! :banghead: This poll had to be started the very day after I had quite an eloquent rant about this very topic in one of the other threads "WFTSC at UK #5" I think.

But the answer is obvious, Get Ready sucks and WFTSC is a confident return to form. I see the poll results are already reflecting this.. Well done NOOL for not choosing the dark side :thumb:

Get Ready sucks?

C'mon Ally, it doesn't suck.. it's a good album, just more rockier than usual.

Except there are 2 tunes I really don't enjoy on them, being Rock The Shack and Run Wild.. but if you had Here To Stay and Brutal instead of those, suddently you have a very good album :p

Many of us choose Slow Jam as the GR track we most wish had been replaced by something else, but I recall that you felt differently on that point, Nic. :)

Neither better nor worse. They are just different. And yes, I do like Slow Jam ;)

I have a hard time deciding, but I think Get Ready is a better "album". to me, wftsc is a messy album, yes it has some great songs, but I don't like the whole, greatest hits feel to much. I love all of get ready anyway!

I know what you mean... I like to listen to all of Get Ready because I know that I can hear Run Wild at the end. It's one of my favourite songs ever. When listening to WFTSC, I start at track three, listen to that a couple of times, give track eight a couple of listens, then play TURN until my wife tells me to TURN it off. Christ, I love that song. Someone on the other site said that Turn "hits you really hard and makes you feel weightless". I think I will always remember those words; not just about that track, but about music generally.

To me WFTSC is a truely great album. Whereas Get Ready except for like 3 songs is more like a collection of B sides. Mind you good B sides.

The whole thing as in "every single track" does not completely suck. I was just generalising, but I'll explain why (to my ears) I generalised.

It basically boils down to the fact that for me, there were so many weak tracks on Get Ready that it kind of invalidated it's tag as a "great album". With most truly great albums there are one or two duff tracks at most, but with GR we got 60 MPH (one of their worst singles), Slow Jam, Rock The Shack, and Close Range. That's FOUR tracks out of ten that are utter crap at worst and uninteresting at best. All IMO of course and before you start thinking I don't like rock music, that couldn't be further from the truth. I think the quickest way to sum up why I don't like those tracks is while the guitars rule, there's simply no tune to them! Where is the melodic guitar playing on Slow Jam? It's just strummy distorted chords any high school band could do, in a word: boring! From the band that brought us Your Silent Face and pretty much all of Technique/Low-life I was so disappointed. Nobody's expecting a sophisticated symphony from them but this was not the same band to my ears, and not in a good, innovative way.

I was even more gutted when they dedicated the Steve Lamacq session to the three weakest tracks on the album! Slow Jam, Rock The Shack and Close Range... I mean c'mon even for any fan who loves GR they must be able to notice how each of those tracks sound exactly alike in that session. Quite simply a mess of boring guitar strumming anyone could play. But it's not all negative, the new album is cool and every track has merit for me unlike GR. The production is much better too... I was always a fan of Stephen Street from Morrissey's "Viva Hate" album, along with Vini Reilly he basically saved Moz's career after The Smiths and it's a great LP that's aged incredibly well to boot.

All in my humble opinion of course :thumb: but I think I do have some valid points about Get Ready.

Yes. :D

While there's nothing wrong with turning up the guitars and "rocking out," Get Ready is the sonic equivelent to a frog in a blender. With that much talent behind the mics and behind the board, there's no reason for the whole album to sound as bad as it does. The CD is plagued with a sibilent and distorted high end and a lack of bass. There's a few good tunes in there somewhere but nothing that sticks with me.

WFTSC is a very classy production from mournful sweeping drones of Who's Joe all the way to the last chords of the retro sounding Working Overtime. It's much more musical than Get Ready and much more pleasing to the ear. WFTSC is full of skilled, purposeful, and evolving mixes worthy of the songs themselves and making those often cringe-worthy lyrics flow right along without effort along with the instrumentation. Whether you like it or not, there's a lot of catchy tunes on WFTSC that may or may not be the taste of each listener but seem to stick in your head long after they're through playing.

But... these are my personal opinions and observations so take 'em or leave 'em. Doesn't matter to me if you agree or not. :)

Get Ready took awhile to grow on me, and 4 years later, I still don't rate it nearly as high as Technique or Republic (don't hate!).

WFTSC is a beautiful and classic album. It literally has something for every fan (rock/dance/white-boy reggae/punk/pop).

Get Ready gets a 6/10 WFTSC gets a 10/10

If they'd mixed the better tunes from both albums (plus HTS) together, then it would really set my pants on fire.

WFTSC by a landslide. Bar 4 or 5 songs Get Ready is forgetable. The new one is top class.

Exactly what I was trying to say... but better!

Musically I like this track yes, I believe the reason why people don't like this song is because of its poor lyrics, not the music... am I wrong?

Nothing wrong with the lyrics...after all, they beat arithmetic.

As for Get Ready, yes, there are b-sides better than some album tracks, and some songs could have been better.

I mean, Crystal, 60 Miles An Hour, Turn My Way, Primitive Notion and Close Range are top tunes in my book (the instrumental break of 60 MAH is one of the best I've heard)

Vicious Streak isn't bad, Someone Like You is a super song is you remove the cheesy chorus.

Slow Jam is not for everybody, I noticed that one, but I do enjoy it, feels like a party song.

Rock The Shack is better on In Sessions than on Get Ready, Close Range too.

Run Wild is... well, not my type of song at all...

Behind Closed Doors, Brutal, Player In The League, Sabotage and Here To Stay, all those are bettwe than RTS and Run Wild in my book... this album could have been better.

But it doesn't suck... some people will hate me for saying this, but I prefer it to PC&L and Low-Life. I'd rank it equaly to Brotherhood.

And don't get me wrong, I love Low-Life too ;)

dammit...4 years later and you clowns are still ragging on Rock The Shack...

I'm going to go cry now...

Sirens is a vast improvement, but get ready boast my fave "Someone like you", and I also like to listen to the album.

With GR, I ended up only listening to Crystal, 60MPH, SLY & Primitive Notion. 6/10

After 20 or so listens, I am still playing Sirens in its proper order, not skipping a track (even Dracula's Castle is a decent song when you get over the title!) Although there are no obvious 'hairs on the back of your neck' moments, the whole thing just works brilliantly and grows on you more with every listen. 8/10

Sirens is the better album overall, no doubt about it:nod:

But I still love Get Ready as well, it was perfect for its time and was just about what everyone wanted after them being away for 8 years, obviously SJ and RTS split opinions, but I still love both them tracks. I can put Sirens on and chill all the way through which hasnae happened since Technique. Say No Mower:D

The lyrics are dreadful, but I can live with dreadful lyrics. I actually don't like it musically either, apart from the lyrics. But that's just me, I can't speak for other Slow Jam haters.

You can speak for me.

The song is so utterly deficient of any quality that I can barely remember how it sounds. I've programmed myself to ignore any history I have of it - apart from; it sounds like a trump at the beginning.

Which, as you can imagine, is enough to keep crows in flight.

What's even worse is that just after (or before) they've parried the sequence with Rock the Sh*thouse! ... what a move. The entire mid section of the album is carrying a potato that went off in '85.

I don't mind RTS, but I wouldn't claim it's one of their better efforts. GR certainly has a very weak midsection.

I think WFTSC is a good blend of old and new and paves the way for a new era of New Order dominence.

Not just the lyrics, which are pretty awful, when I hear the laboured outro chorus "I can't get enough of this, I can't get enough of this" My mind frequently thinks "I've had enough of this" and I hit the trusty skip button.

Even as a fan of the song and putting aside the lyrics Nick you must see the sheer inspiration free music doesn't do the song any favours. The synth "alarm" hits at the start sounds like a Truck's horn at a roadside cafe! The strummy electric guitar is even worse and goes nowhere, I could do that on my electric and I'm shit at guitar. About the one saving grace is Steve's skill on the hihats, that (somehow) shines through. Aside from that it's one of New Order's blandest and musically bereft songs IMO. Even comparing it to earlier b-sides I'd be interested to know who would prefer Slow Jam to say, Don't Do It.

The best way to look at this is we got Slow Jam and Close Range in 2001 vs. Turn and Morning Night And Day in 2005. Enough said really.

Ally.

I've said it before, so I'll say it again, all the Slow Jam haters should be force fed the Lamacq session version through a tube after I have bashed their faces in with the vinyl copy of Get Ready.

A short but sweet rant from THE member of the Green and White Party. Don't forget kids....5th May:thumb:
