What did Hooky do on World?

This thought has often puzzled me. Did he make cups at tea at the studio, or play bass on synthesiser, or stay in bed?

And do you know any other songs which Hooky doesnt play on? Elegia and Avalanche spring to mind.

If you've seen what he does in the video, that's about the size of it.

He plays 6 string bass on Elegia and i think he uses it on Avalanche (have to have a listen)on world he was using a 5 string Musicman stingray bass which i believe was Brian Whittaker's (from Revenge) bass if my memory serves me

I imagine he was involved in the writing and/or recording elements of the song. You should listen to the live version on Retro. He's on that alright.

It's Hooky's Stingray rather than Brian's - there's one of David Sultan's photos of his bass collection that shows it.

Ive just listened to Elegia and the solo at the end sounds very much like the bottom E string of an electric guitar and not a bass. I might be wrong? Couldnt hear any bass on Avalanche either

The main theme running through Elegia is 6 string bass.

I never heard a bass on Dreams Never End however he does play his six-stringer on the live version on the dvd.

What DOES he do in the video for World anyway? Never conciously noticed him in it...

Hooky's bass on DNE is turned down a ton both live and recorded plus it sounds like a pretty simple riff, probably because he's singing on the track.

Got to disagree there, it's Hooky's six string bass that opens Dreams Never End, hopefully they'll play it their current dates, just to settle the argument.

Sorry Charles, but it's definitely Hooky's 6-string at the start. I checked my 3 16 DVD again just to be doubly sure, and you can clearly see him playing the intro on bass, check around the 7.21 mark. Barney has actually got his hand on his face when the intro kicks off, so it probably isn't him! Aplogies for being such a smartarse CTB

ahh! oh well, that makes the intro riff all the more awesome then. i'll have to review my 316 dvd. it's been about a month since i last watched it!

Do you have a version hitherto unavailable to the rest of the world then Chuck? Every other version starts with an unmistakeable and unforgettable bass riff (though to be fair the Western Works demo does have both a bit of drum and some guitar at the same time).

February 9th, 1981. Drums, guitar then bass. Probably due to technical difficulties though.

Well he's in the band, so he's got to do something while he's on stage. It's still not the usual loud Hooky bass. As for the album version your guess is as good as mine. He's probably not there.

Since when has a 6-string not been real bass?

When playing this song live, Hooky used a Musicman Stingray 5 string bass to give him the lower B string. On record, that would appear to be replaced by sequenced bass, (i.e. no Hooky playing on it) and I suspect that there wasn't sufficient bassline in the song to give him anything to do besides take this low bass part over when they played it live.
