you can't act like that big of an idiot without serious drugs.
Barney may indeed still be on drugs, but it's not true that you have to be on them to act zany.
And furthermore, an experienced drug user can often disguise the fact that he has taken drugs by refraining from such zany acts.
I have always been happy with NOs stance on drink and drugs. They have refrained from the nudge-nudge innuendo that some bands hide behind, while normally avoiding attempts to glamorise or exaggerate the importance of drugs in their lives. Don't forget that they were at the heart of a scene where drug use was expected rather than accepted for much of their careers. In some social circles, a casual comment about ecstasy, cocaine or LSD would be far less shocking that the revelation that one had consumed two bottles of Pernod, for example. I feel that New Order's stance has been driven by their own honesty and relaxed attitude, rather than a desire to cultivate a particular image.
The careers and lives of some of the most successful figures in pop have been utterly ruined by drugs. Despite some impressive hangovers, and a few regrettable performances, New Order seem to have escaped this fate.
Now if you will excuse me, I am off for some sandwiches...
