Staring at the Sea (The images)

Fantastic video, finally picked it up Weds after years of thinking about buying it. Really interesting to see how bad Lol Tolhurst looks in makeup (the worst drag queen since Liz Taylor), but on the whole a good way to kill an hour and a half. It's a pity the latest Greatest Hits, with almost none of the songs from that era, is available on DVD while Staring isn't, but oh well

...Lol Tolhurst was always looking bad... :evil2: ...and he wasn't even able to play the chords of "Inbetween Days" properly... :evil2:

I liked the Cure back in the eighties, their Kiss Me (three times) tour was great, but I sort of lost interest after that. New Order have progressed musically: if you compare what NO brought out this year with the Cure's new single 'Cut Here' there is no comparison. The Cure sounds like New Order 20 years ago. I mean: Is that Hooky on bass???

Theres half a dozen good Cure tracks in my humble and probably incorrect opinion, the rest are Bunnymen b-sides and misc shite that comes from having big hair.

Wish was the beginning of the end for the Cure. Their stuff before that was pretty good. If Disintigration had been their final album, their catalogue would be tough to beat.
A Few Hours After This, Like Cockatoos, Kyoto Song...they have tons of really interesting songs but they should have left it alone in the 90's. The mix of Close To Me on Mixed Up always cheers me up and reminds me of breaking dorm rules in college.

Anybody else rate The Glove, Robert's collaboration with Steve S. from the Banshees? Okay, he only sings on two songs, and there are a couple of instrumental experiments, but on whole, the album fits in nicely with what The Cure were doing circa 82/83.

Haven't heard anything from or about the female that sings most of the songs, Landray, since the albums release

hmm. i liked that video also, but i too wish it were on dvd.

that doesn't surprise me though. i have most of NO's videos but i can't find any of them on dvd either. pretty sad actually.

Are you saying they sound fantastic ?

What I am trying to say is that NO has renewed their music over and over again over the last 20 years. I probably would not have been a fan of them anymore if they would not have gone through these changes (LL, Brotherhood, Technique, even Republic and recently Get Ready). It kept their sound fresh and interesting for me. And yes, NO of 20 years ago still sounds great. :)

Being a bit bored this afternoon, I dug through a box of tapes, and found an unmarked compilation tape that featured the instrumental version of "What Do You Want From Me". Every second was pure New Order, an absolute classic example of exactly why we all love New Order (even if it does borrow quite a lot from Let's Go when played as an instrumental [song structure rather than notes]). Possibly the best thing any of them ever wrote, and it doesn't count !

I was also a fan of the mid-80's Cure videos - but does this compilation have "Why Can't I be You " on it? Not sure if it does, I ask because Lol Tolhurst is made the ultimate butt of the bands jokes when he appears in this video with his face painted like a black and white minstrel peering through a huge upended pair of lips. i recall reading that Robert Smith intended this as a dig on the guy because the rest of the band thought he was a c***. hence the cryptic Y C*** I B U symbolism elsewhere in the video (a bumblebee appears at one point, then an eye if I remember correctly). Didn't they kick Tolhurst out of the band because he was an alchoholic or something?

sorry guys, but i think simon gallup is a much better bass player than hooky. i've met simon and i've met hooky. they're both nice guys. ben, i think you're right about lol tolhurst. he got kicked out of the band because he was an alchoholic. that and he was a bad keyboard player and he didn't contribute to the band at all. i read once that robert smith said they used to turn his keyboards down while performing shows.

Yeah gO5 - I remember it all now - and didn't Smith used to put coloured stickers on some of the keys on Tolhusrts keyboard so he can press the right ones whilst he was playing, as he was often that pissed when playing gigs.? Ha ha - what a bozo. !! I'm lauging at the memory of it all!!

Yep, you're right. Hooky effectively plays lead guitar on a bass, with Barney playing mainly rhythm parts with his twanger, and Gillian playing a chord occasionally. That Poll geezer plays basslines for the Cure.

There have been so many occasions where New Order actually need two basses !! (Coincidentally, in light of concurrent thread, the end of Confusion live has two basses)
