Canada are pretty good at rugby too ! It is a good spectator sport, much moreso than that crap US game.

There's two distinct but similar rugby games, Rugby Union and Rugby League. It's very popular in the Southern Hemisphere (Union in NZ, both in Aus) and in certain sectors in Britain. Personally I prefer Rugby League, having been brought up playing Union by a league-playing father. Much prefer real football (soccer to you lot), no padding or any of that gubbins needed !

We call it egg-chasing. Top rugby crowds at the best teams tend to be around 15,000. (And there's only one or two teams get that). Most big soccer teams get between 40,000 and 67,000 every week. Bar-billiards is a bigger sport !

What always makes me laugh is that egg-chasing is licensed brutality played by toffs, whereas football is supposed to be the gentleman's game and is played by thugs !

Bar-billiards isn't pool, pool is good !! Bar-billiards is this poxy game with several holes in the table and different sticks that you mustn't knock down. Every time a ball goes down a hole you get points. A bit like golf with a snooker cue. Retirement shelved forthwith.

Football by far is the best game. Rugby over American football. Nineball when I need to make money. Rugby in U.S.A. is only popular in the the university level. I was in Australia and I think they are gods over there.

Yes, Rugby League is very very big in parts of Australia - mainly in the state of New South Wales where Sydney is... Rugby Union is big too, more in more affluent suburbs & area ( a leftover from the British Private School system ) Rugby Union is also big in Malaysia - an ex-British Colony, and I think it's quite a dangerous game without padding, etc... I remember a tragedy in my high school when a star Rugby Union student/player died when he broke his neck in a tackle... Rugby League is very popular in Newcastle, Australia especially this year, the Newcastle Knights won the premiership ( the entire city was hysterical..)

Another form of Rugby call Australian Football ( a.k.a AFL / Aussie Rules ) is very big in parts of Australia where Rugby League is not dominant, namely in the state of Victoria where Melbourne is ( and that's where CandyTheDog and Mitch are ) I think Australian Fotball is quite similar to Gaelic Football...

Rugby is a game for overweight, over-priveleged and sexually immature brats who can't play football (soccer). In Scotland it is played almost exclusively in private schools by the type of prick who grows up to be your bank manager.

Reminds me of that classic TV moment in the early 70s when that dog ran on the pitch, and they put a caption up saying "A. Dog". Eddie Waring was pure quality entertainment, even if he did set RL back lightyears ! Ray French had his moments as well.......

Rugby is shit, slow and boring but not as bad as gridion. If you want a real sport, watch rugby league. Its fast, tough and exciting.

Happy to have you as an "honorary Aussie", Seb (or should that read "Happy"?) As was mentioned earlier, here in Melbourne, in the state of Victoria (as well as some other states like Western Australia and South Australia) the most popular form of football is Aussie Rules footy, otherwise known as AFL. And by the way, can anyone tell me whether the game I watched opposing Australia to the LIONS (and which Australia won) was a Rugby Union game or a Rugby League? Based on the description I read, it has to be rugby league unless I wonder what you describe as TOUGH & ROUGH ??????

The game your referring to is Rugby Union. League is much more physical. There are certain rules in union such as no shoulder charging that make it less physical.

Aussie rules is another great sport. My secong favourite behing league. This is faster and more skilful than league but not as physical.

My two Euros worth? I follow Aussie Rules and Soccer (esp Premier League) religiously, then Rugby Union and Grid Iron less so, and finally Rugby League.

My impressions are that Aussie Rules is a fantastic multi-dimensional game, athletic, fast paced and fanatically patronised. But you can never convince the Brits that, they tend to look at it despairingly and write it off as some sort of Antipodean barbarism..

Soccer is also a fantastic game, with sublime skill levels and magical atmosphere, although it lends itself to stalemate situations and boring passages at times.. And that's not because I follow the Arse..

Rugby Union can be thrilling when teams employ an attacking, running game and it boasts several dimensions and phases of play..

Grid Iron I enjoy also although it can get bogged down in stoppages.. Sorry Ahmad but Rugby League for mine is the worst code, often coming across as a boring slugfest, one dimensional and always seems to be played by meatheads..

Half the problem in Australia is that we have too many professional football codes.. If everyone played say soccer, we'd be up there with the world's best.. Rugby League is in the most parlous state in this country and I wouldn't mind if it went bust so we could strengthen our numbers in the other three codes. And I was born in Sydney.

Aussie Rules is the best of all egg-chasing type sports, without a doubt. Compulsive TV viewing - love it ! :)

Aussie rules is a skillfull game, the longest of any team sport/football games. They play on the biggest grounds (pitches for my UK friends) about 440m around 120m between goals. Midfield players are know to have run the equvelent of 20 km in a match, and for physicallity, well they don't run headfirst into each other but it is quite physical, just imagine running after the ball at top speed to have someone catapult into you with a hip and shoulder to knock you over. Rugby is a shite game and should be played in prisons by moorons. Soccer is a wonderful sport that does not get the interest in Oz as it should. Can anyone tell me how Alloa Athletic are doing in the Scotish 2 Division this season?
