Blue Monday: the biggest selling 12" of all time, has (officially) been re-released by the band twice in the past 17 years. Once in 1988 on Factory, then again in 1995 on London. People who dislike remixes best look away! :evil4: Excusing for the moment that re-releases are generally a lame excuse by desperate record labels/bands to cash in, which do you think did most justice to the original 1983 release?

For me it's definitely the BlueMonday-95 mixes. Hardfloor did a great job of reworking the track (and Barney's new vocal) for the nineties plus a couple of other '95 mixes were interesting too. Blue Monday 1988 sounds totally cringeworthy and always has. Whatever possessed the band to allow Quincy Jones to fuck over the definitive 80s electro song with "Boy this is too much!!! etc." and manic laughter samples we'll never know! :nonono: Factory and the band must've been too coked up or desperate for any old re-release to notice how bad it was. London may have been cashing in on (the best/rest of) with BM-95 but at least they did it properly. Even the artwork on those singles was miles better than the bland '88 counterparts.

IMO of course.... discuss! :thumb:

Have to agree, the 95 version is much better than the '88. It does the song some justice I think, and the vocals are stunning on it. Cool synth textures really help as well.

Just for it's video, BM '95 loses. :p

88 is a damn good remix except for some of the odd samples in it. 95 is just BORING

This is an interesting poll, if not unfair to BM'88 as there are loads of mixes of BM'95 compared to just the original 7" and 12" of BM'88 (well, there's a dub, DJ only mix, the Beach Buggy 7" and 12"). If I can pick any of the mixes from '95 I'd choose the Brain mix, or even Hardfloor remix (or was it a mix? maybe the mix was the remix - I can't recall!). Some of the '95 ones, such as the Hawtin and Richie Hawtin mixes (two different mixes altogether), were rather bland. I still like the Andrea mix and the Jam & Spoon mix. Starwash and Plutone were average.

I like both the re-releases, '88 and '95, but went with '95.

Blue Monday '95 (I'm talking Hardfloor here) is a decent remix.

Blue Monday '88 is an abomination.
