In case this has already been featured here, I apologise. In case it hasn't, has anyone read these features in the UK music mag Mojo? Some of it is quite enlightening!
Nuggets about JD:
On tour supporting fellow Mancunians The Buzzcocks, they wound up in the hotel bar in Cardiff. As the bar shut at 2 a.m, the ever-resourceful roadies prised the metal grilles off and handed out free beer! The enjoyment concluded with a huge drunken cushion fight between the main act and the support.
On the same tour, JD surpassed themselves in Guildford (Surrey's fine county town) by removing the strip-lights from the gents' bogs and smearing the taps and light switches with human shit!
A NO nugget:
Working on I.C.B (one of Movement's tracks) with Hannett, Sumner was quite new to vocal recording and needed a lot of guidance in the studio. Hannett kept repeating that Sumner's vocal wasn't quite right and to do it again. Sumner asked their producer what he wasn't doing right and Hannett just replied that it wasn't right but that he would tell him when it was.
Sumner therefore didn't speak again and just sang it and sang it again and again. After about forty times, he thought "Oh fuck, I've had enough of this" and went to the control room. There was no-one there! Hannett had buggered off, just disappeared!
Like I say, it's a great read and there's interviews with Ian's ex Debbie and their daughter Natalie, who's quite a stunner.
