For me New Order is Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert. I think they lost something very essential when Gillian left. Phil knows how to play and he is male. I think Gillians shy image and poor playing is essential part of New Order. They changed they name after Ian Curtis, because they felt the band is not the same anymore. I think they should change it again, because Gillians not in the band. Maybe Last Order?

Its been mentioned here loads of times before - NO were a 3-piece first, for a few months before Gillian joined. They recorded Ceremony that way (& then re-recorded it with her later). So, NewOrder could be seen as those 3 and whoever else they invite along (Gillian, Arthur Baker, Stephen Hague, Phil - they've all made a difference to the sound). Having said that, I do miss her contribution - I think the new songs are missing a little something in the keyboard department - can't describe it, but its there on lots of the OtherTwo stuff. I do hope she comes back eventually, then we can have NEWorder the world-beating 5-piece:D
I know what you mean, they have lost a little w/o Gillian, but the title track wftsc sounds quite alot like Your Silent Face, especially the keyboard parts. That being said it makes me think that Bernard may not have played the keyboards on PCL or on WFTSC but I'm sure he had a big influence on the arangements. IMO
The signature sound is Barney, Hooky, and Morrissey. 
It's still New Order as long as those three are playing together. Take one of them out of the equation, and it's not New Order.
Bottom line is that it is probably Bernard's call and they all probably didn't want to change the name after being New Order for soooooooooooooo long.

Is your dissatisfaction with the newer material your only reason for the name change? Let's say WFTSC was the best thing you ever heard from them, would you still not want to call them New Order?
It's hard enough for them to sell anything these days as New Order. Changing their name would pretty much be career suicide.

It doesnt matter what they or their fawning fans do... of course it would be consistent with the ethic of the band to change the name, but since when are they being consistent with anything they have done? but it makes n difference... they are already being referred to as New Order 2 and history will only increase the distinction between this collection of musicians and the band that recorded several important records in the 80s and 90s...

No, don't the change the name. I do miss Gillian, though. I'm okay with Phil on board but if we can't have Gillian than I'd rather have Johnny Marr instead. But Johnny'd rather sing with his Healers band than loan his god-like guitaring skills to NO. C'est la vie.
The original 3 a re still there, plus if they don't see a reason to change the name, then that's fine with me.

The NME review referred to them as New Order 2... and thats only the start... time will add far more to this story than you silly kids can imagine now... and its not a small issue at all... imagine if this band was called Joy Division... it was important enough for them to change their name when one of the members left... why is it any different that this time its the keyboardist and guitarist as opposed to the singer? Its truly a telling point how little of the punk ideal is left when this point is laughed off as being insignificant... its the difference between art and commerce...

Just cos the NME say something it doesnae mean people take it seriously Mr Wells, of course there's been a change in the band and obviously it will be looked apon as a progression from the band with Gillian in it. But New Order 2 gies peace.

What the fuck for, it's their call, no one elses. True a member is currently no longer with them, but then she said several times she was never officially a member anyway, they tried her out, but never let go, anyway she may come back and then they'd have to change the name back, there's not much chance of IC coming back, no matter how highly we regard him.
i don't think that is a good idea at all..... you can't change your band's name after more than 20 years!! JD was another story, Ian died, and also the band was, what? like 4 years old? now is a totaly different story.

Change the name? That has to be the most pointless idea I've heard in a while. Like other people have said, other bands have changed their line-ups and kept their names. Why should NO be any different? 
They should change their name from Joy Division to New Order.
