Joy Division was inspired by Sex Pistols. The Clash and Sex Pistols were inspired by The Ramones. Iggy and the Stooges influenced every punk band from 1969 to the present. The American bands were hardly known in the U.S., but hugely influential in the U.K.
Dead Boys. Richard Hell and the Voidoids. The Avengers. Romeo Void.
Manchester had the Hacienda. New York had C.B.G.B.'s. Guess which one came first? And which one lasted the longest?
The US invented rock... and Detroit brought you house etc.
hell, we even sent you rap... is there ANY music developed in the past 50 years that emerged from the UK??
You Brits just repackage what we come up with export it back with cute accents, and whiter for the whities....

To be fair, CBGB's is pretty boring nowadays, whereas the Hacienda still had concerts like Bjork with 808 State well into its later years. However, I agree: the US did contribute something extremely important: Punk. If it weren't for the Ramones, the Sex Pistols wouldn't have formed, and if the Sex Pistols wouldn't have performed on that fateful day, then a certain band that gave us such wonderful songs as "She's Lost Control" and "Transmission" wouldn't have formed...
Also, one mustn't forget the Talking Heads, Mission of Burma and Suicide(among a few others that I really can't think of at the moment due to allergies)! They're all wonderful, IMO.
Ramones never influenced Sex Pistols or The Clash. Sex Pistols and Ramones just had a same idea at about the same time. None of them knew who the f... the other were at that time.

Sorry you feel that way but it's pretty common knowledge that the Sex Pistols were a band manufactured by Malcolm McLaren. He created them using bits and pieces of the Ramones, New York Dolls, and the Stooges amongst others.

That any member of Joy Division knew Ramones when they went see Sex Pistols, thinking "hey, they just sound like the Ramones"?

Malcolm definitely knew who the Ramones were, after all he was in New York managing the New York Dolls in their decline. Love the bit in the new Ramones documentary about Johnny Rotten wondering if the Ramones were gonna beat him up before Da bruddahs July 4,1976 gig in London.

I think this US v. UK argument is really missing the point (that's not addressed to you, btw, Tarbox, even though you do deserve a sound thrashing)...
U.S. musicians who couldn't get airplay in the U.S. because they were black men playing "race music" had a receptive audience in UK port towns like Liverpool & Manchester. Their music came back to us as the British Invasion.
U.S. musicians who couldn't get airplay in the U.S. because they were playing music outside the "mainstream" of rock had a receptive audience in the UK. Their music came back to us as punk.
Re-packaged? Musical influences cross-pollinate in each direction across the Atlantic, and come back as something different.
The delta blues are taken to the city, and come out as Chicago blues. Change it around a little, and it becomes R&B, and then rock & roll and Motown. The British Invasion. Punk crosses to England and back again. Post-punk, house, hip hop, trip hop, they all come from somewhere and influence the next new thing. That's what musicians do. They here something, and turn it into something else. Is that so bad?
