Has anyone heard anything on whether Substance will get remastered? I would love to hear the guitars on ceremony and everything's gone green brought out more and the drums too :)
Will Substance be remastered?

apart from some EQ work on the stereo mixdown there is little chance of them re-producing any of the tracks from the multitracks. since martin hannett is no longer with us and some of the multitracks are inevitably missing.
Yeah, I wasn't too impressed with the sound quality on Substance, on many of the songs a fairly loud hiss can clearly be heard. I guess that's just because some of the earlier tracks on their are just taken straight from vinyl, but even True Faith on there sound a bit cloudy and just not very clear.
What's with the best of album though? I know the remix tracks are fairly different, but even when I compare Thieves Like Us from Substance, then listen to it on the best of, the best of CD sounds so much clearer and better, my guess is that all tracks have been equalised on that album. Try it yourself, go listen to Regret off of Republic, then on the best of, clearly some EQ work there.
It's just a remastering of the original master tapes.
When bands record in the studio, the stereo mixdown of every song is far from the final recording that goes on the CD. Every album or compilation released will take the original master recordings, then compress, enhance and equalize them to give the whole album a similar aural "colour" from start to finish, making the whole thing consistent, matching volume levels, etc. In the time from 'Substance' to 'Waiting For The Sirens' Call', digital mastering technology has been refined considerably, and trick like multiband compression along with good EQ'ing can bring out elements of old master recordings that previous masterings could not. CDs these days are especially loud when compared to those in the late 80s (such as 'Substance').
Most people think 'remastering' means going back to the original multi-track recordings and altering levels and effects, but that very rarely happens (unless you're Orbital, making surround sound versions of your albums for DVD). A remastered album merely adjusts the volume, compression and EQ of each final stereo studio recording to "clean up" the sound of a track or album.
This is the reason why 'True Faith 94' is a remix, not a remaster - Stephen Hague went back to the multitrack orignal and altered levels and effects before making a new stereo master recording.
Hope that makes sense t y'all!
Andy
It does, but still....I don't like the new 94 remix of True Faith. I grew up on the original and that's what I enjoy the most. The best of also has edited version of a few other tracks much to my displeasure.
That's true, but the best of album is what you want to give to someone if your introducing new order to them, thanks to the best of im a new order fan and went out and bought all their other stuff.
Will any of their stuff be re-mastered? Who knows.
The most likely would be a sigles collection on 5.1 or dts.
But who knows if this will happen.
Some recordings should be remastered, just for clarity. In my opinion, Substance isn't one of them. Quite frankly, the Cure having each album remastered (with an extra disc of b-sides) is superfluous. My copy of 3 imaginary boys (remastered) doesn't sound a heck of a lot different from Boys don't cry - at least on the similar tracks. The b-sides (who needs 3 versions of 10:15 on a Saturday night?) don't sound great. New Order could afford to remaster Brotherhood and maybe Low-life; Movement could be remastered, too, if anyone cared.

Umm, they just made a new album.

I don't think New Order are personnaly involved in pressing DVDs or remastering any tapes. I'm sure Warner's is big enough to be able to handle a new album as well as a DVD.
yeah they put out an album, but in their 8 albums they have 5 or 6 ...........hundred other stuff. Plus I just got into NO, I dont need to spend more on remasters.

Same here, I bought the best of New Order in 1997 because I loved Bizarre Love Triangle not knowing any of their other songs, and I still remember that spring afternoon, because after playing the best of new order all the way through just once, I was astonished, because i knew that I made the greatest musical discovery of my life.

And the real version of Mesh on it.

Perhaps someone could redo the mix so it doesn't sound so "foggy".
There has been great advances in editing too; the editing job before the third chorus in Low Life is horrible.

... of TPK
Er, there isn't a third (sung) chorus on The Perfect Kiss! I take it you mean the point at which the third verse would be due to come in (if it wasn't removed on this edit). Musically, the edit is accurate, but you hear the beginning of Barney forming the 'W' of the line 'When you are alone at night', then it edits to a different part of the track when you'd expect him to be singing.
Remastering wouldn't sort out that problem. If they'd've muted the vocal during the multitrack editing process back in '85, that would've sorted that out. Some fancy digital editing between the seven inch and twelve inch masters would sort it out, but I just accept that error as part of the track now - just as with that horribly-edited intro to the seven inch of Shellshock, where you hear the attack of two snare drums overlapped after the first "Hold on"...
It was awkward tape splicing back then, to be fair. Much easier these days with Pro Tools and crossfades!

Umm, they just made a new album.
... and have 70% of the next album recorded!
'sooner than you think' was edited too, they have a version that's a minute or so longer (more guitar doodling near the end)

My bad; I always mix up the terms "verse," "chorus," and "refrain."
Thanks!

I'd say this is far less likely than a CD remaster.
Not many bands have old compilations completely remixed and remastered in 5.1 channels, DD or DTS. It's a huge task.

Go see what I think it is Talking Heads have done (at least in the UK), all their albums have just been remasted on dvd using 5.1. It seems that is the way to go.
I find those 5.1 surround sound remasters all a bit pointless really, as most of my music listening is done when I'm out and about with my Network Walkman and headphones. 5.1 is great for movies in the home cinema (although I don't have one), but who has the time to sit down and listen to a whole album without distractions in the living room?
Having said that, a surround sound full 12" of The Perfect Kiss would be interesting to hear - the many elements of the track could be heard a bit more clearly, and surround sound frog croaks could be fun! Doubt they even have the original multitrack tapes to go back to and remaster, mind you!
Andy
To hear a less resonant Ceremony, Procession, or Everything's Gone Green would be nice I think. Remastering Substance is not too likely but not an impossible idea. Something like that might depend on how their success goes in the next while.

I don't think this has actually happened has it?
They've released the Jonathon Demme 'Stop Making Sense' concert film on DVD in 5.1 but I don't know about any others.
There are only a few true 5.1 studio albums out there, like Orbital's 'The Altogether' and Flaming Lips 'Yoshimi' but it's not really happening a lot. With live albums it makes more sense and I can recommend Underworld's 'Everything Everything' as a killer example. None of the New Order live DVDs have been released in 5.1, regrettably.
As mentioned above, the original masters don't exist for a lot of these albums any more and it's a significant operation converting them to multi-channel. Unlikely.
A 5.1 channel TPK is quite a nice fantasy though.

Don't forget Jarre's new "Aero"...it's actually quite good on a solid 5.1-system :).

Isn't 511 in dts?
Yes it was. I forgot about that one, DTS and DD 5.1. Not a bad mix either as far as NO goes as they generally sound a bit muddled live, for mine.
But again, it's one thing recording something new in 5.1 and another going back and trying to re-create 5.1 from old masters that probably don't exist.

Listen to the the Low Life version of TPK. You can hear Barney Starting to say The ,as in The Perfect Kiss is the Kiss of Death.

Actually, it's the beginning of Barney forming the 'W' of the line 'When you are alone at night' (as I said earlier in this thread).
