Barney's Jig

What's with this running on the spot business Barney's taken to doing - acting like your elderly uncle pissed up at a bloody wedding? That is sadder than sad.

They're in danger of repeating what bands like the Stones did in the 80s and 90s - sullying a peerless back catalogue with comeback after pointless comeback, each time eroding the value of their body of work with fist-in-mouth embarrassing appearences like the Jonathan Ross Show.

I know a lot of people here are trying to capture the magic of the 'good old days' (or were too young at the time to witness NO live), and therefore will champion their favorite band to the hilt. Personally I feel them chipping away at my fondness for this band little by little. New Order By Numbers - a standard 4/4 beat (probably decreed by Barney), an ill-suited high octave bassline, and possibly the worst vocal performance since the later Stone Roses gigs - HEY PRESTO!! Keeps the American fans happy! And the Vikings, of course.

Care to explain that last comment, squire? And seeing as you spell 'favourite' as 'favorite' what nationality does that make you if you're having a pop at Americans?! Or can you simply not spell?!

well even i must admit it was a bit embarrasing,my missus oddly enough thought it was great:shrug: . just thank god ian died, could you imagine what it would have been like to have a 50 yr old ian still flailing about, with barney running on the spot and hooky doing the splits, and all with steve looking on in bemusement?. well actually id pay fucking good money to see THAT.

Unquestionably, they were fucking ridiculous. But then, haven't they always been?? Almost got into a fight with one of my cockier students the other day in the pub when he reeled out the standard "Joy Divison were great/New Order are shit/Curtis is God" routine. Had to grab him by the collar and shout "they're the same fucking band, twat face!!! Ian sang like a frog and danced like a dildo!!!"

Never mind, eh?

Yeah it's true, the performance on Ross' show was terrible, the dancing is quite embarrasing also and i'm sure most people in that audience would of thought, what the hell was that!? It seems Barney just doesn't take it serious any more, doesn't care, who knows, it's clear Steve was totally pissed off when Bernard kept wooping, the whole thing was very awkward indeed and Ana didn't fit in there at all.

We've kind of adpated to it though and try to see through it and just to enjoy it, that's the attitude around here now. No matter how bad it was it was still good seeing them.

they should kick sumner out. seriously.

he is the one bringing in the crappy Electronic type songs.

they could get that guy that sang in Monaco....

when stephen morris looks bummed, you know Sumner has to go.

I am really starting to dislike Bernard. Sometime in the early 90s, after the first (Good) Electronic lp, he started to sing like crap and get a silly ego...

his whistling, stupid monkey dancing, and teleprompter are all adding up to say "loser".

at this point, I honestly might rather just see New Order without bernard... no vocals....

and i say this with a heavy heart.

Two questions:

  1. When the fcuk has anyone ever seen Morris actually happy? Certainly never at a New Order concert in my lifetime.

  2. What did everyone make of Barney's blown-out-cheeked acieed dance on TOTP approximately 16.5 years ago?! At the time I thought it was funny as fcuk. Don't really see the difference between what he did then, and does now, sorry. I was 20 at the time so to see a 30-something dance like he was at a rave just seemed equably ridiculous.

Have to agree there.... ok so i thought the Ross performance was terrible, i got on my soapbox cause i want em to show just how fuckin ace they are to a prime time audience (and to my folks who was watching!) instead we got a bad drunken karaoke performance! Still all this get rid of Barney and slagging off Electronic bullshit is just someone or "something" trying to stir it up :nonono:

When I first saw Stephen on one of the Live-DVDs, I thought I could see a thinking-bubble above his head with the words: "How did I get to play in this f...... band?" But now I think he is just very concentrated on his work...

well tbh i think the change in the band or development if you will is nothing short of staggering. dig out taras shevenko video and you will see what i mean. hardly any movement from barney and only a hint of a whooop, and today its a full blown work out. jogging on the spot, leg flicks ,arms punching air, little bunny hops, fucking magnificent. has anyone aproached the band to do a "workout dvd" by the way?. barney & hooky in leotards, now WHO WOULDNT pay good money to see that?? re-name tracks such as: 1:face up = sit up 2:dreams never end = treadmills never end 3:in a lonely place = in a bloaty place 4:i could go on. :evil4:

alright, yeah, I was being a bit over the top... I don't want nor expect Sumner to exit... I do tend to overplay things...

BUT, do you guys think management has the balls to mutter something to Sumner, or is he beyond criticism???

do you think Hook is frightened (seriously, not that he would ever admit it) of saying something... I mean, the only reason I ask these silly questions is because CLEARLY nobody IS saying anything to him!

(and I thought it interesting how HOok handled the question on that recent audio interview when asked about Bernards' whistling... he seemed a bit 'careful' about his answering... )

but somebody needs to explain to Sumner it is not cute, not endearing... it is just embarrassingly lame...

almost as bad as naming a song Dracula's Castle...

:)

I think yer missing the point here. Will the management have the balls? The band are in charge of what they do, the management have fuck all to do with the music / performances.

If someone can prove me wrong, I'd love to hear it.

They, or as you would put it, Barney is enjoying himself, he's always enjoyed put himself at the centre of attention when playing live, the only tour when Hooky really started coming to the front and growling was 93, when the band were at their lowest. If you'd have been to any of the 98 shows or the GR tour you would have seen Hooky and Barney both enjoy hamming it up to the crowd....AND getting on.

They both "get into" LWTUA with the "come on" shouts. People need to chill out a wee bit and enjoy them for what they are. As long as they are still enjoying it and putting good stuff out, I'll be happy buying it and going to see them.

This Jonathan Ross performance has certainly cooked up a storm on here! I haven't seen it yet because I was out having a few Friday night beers, will catch the repeat tonight on BBC3 no doubt. Is it anything like the Canal+ performance? Cos I thought that was pretty good.

I think some fans are losing perspective here a wee bit. One dodgy TV performance and it's "The band are finished", "Barney should leave" etc. even I must say get a bloody grip. Having said that I do think Barney's whooping is getting pretty ridiculous these days, if I see them on TV and he's in full swing I normally flip between channels until the instrumental break of the song they're performing kicks in

Seriously, they should appear on the ITV show 'Hit Me Baby One More Time'. The worst comeback since Dollar.

Can I get a "WHOOOOOOOOHHH!"?

I feel sorry for Steve - he's the only one who doesn't act like every performance is the last one and therefore calls for much hamming it up and acting like a 12 year old buffoon having had too much snakebite.

I'd love to hear how they would murder a JD song like Atmosphere by partying it up - oh hang on, they already have done. Every fuckin time they've ever played it!

Hear hear! I have been saying they should go instrumental for awhile... or use spoken word passages or anything to make the approach a little fresher...

As Bernard has lost his inhibitions we come to see how important they are to keep! It was a nice process to see the band slowly open up over the years, but like the flasher who keeps dancing around in front of you as you try to divert your eyes, now all those ugly dangly parts are all on permanent show...

Its nice to see the fans waking up to this nasty reality!

I think Barney's dancing and showmanship are some of the best elements of the band. The sense of humor and fun he adds to a live show is absolutely crucial in my eyes. One thing about NO is that they are a fun band - their music is just so good and enjoyable that hearing Barney whoop and seeing him dance makes it that much more fun for me. I always appreciate it when genius doesn't take itself too seriously and has a fun element to it, and because of things like Barney's dancing, nothing is more brilliant AND more fun than New Order. That's just my opinion on the matter.

Now I expect you lot to slate me for this... but I agree with a lot of what he's saying here. :( The guys just embarrassing now... he's an awful live performer, his lyrics are just the same shower of shite over and over again... And besides, it's already been made very clear that the latest album was done exactly how Barney wanted it. Hooky would make a much better frontman in my opinion.

Added to that, the band have properly sold out in recent years... miming all the fucking time. Can't be doing with that at all... the band have definitely lost a lot of credibility that they once had.

i don't understand what the fuck some of you really want. Musically, INHO New Order is now almost at their best. Barnie and Hooky are fat and they look sometimes ridiculous, Morris is frozen/bored. So what?? I don't care, and i don't give a shit if he dances, spin, do kicks, or whatever. They are still doing excellent records. So everything else, means nothing.

Well said. It takes someone from Argentina, a part of the world quite unlikely to see Barney whooping and dancing live, to add a bit of commentary that makes sense. It's about the music, people...nothing else matters. All you other twats can fuck off.

This thread is a disgrace. I find some of these negative posts about New Order offensive – they have no place on a fan site. Its one thing to criticize a particular track or performance, but some of you should really have a look at yourselves and ask what you are doing posting on here at all.

There are millions of other bands in the world - perhaps some of you should fuck off and find one you like instead of moaning about this one.

Spotnick, Seb, have you considered banning some of these arseholes that don't have a good word to say about the band? Alternatively, could you start a new forum entitled "I HATE NEW ORDER" that people who actually like the band could ignore?

I've been a great fan of the band for over 20 years now, but the last performances were some kind of ridiculous, especially from Barney.

What's the thing with the teleprompter? He can't remember his own words and looks at it every second. This is so weird and uncool.

Barney's dancing and whooping are now an endearing part of the live performance for me...

I quite enjoy Barney actually looking like he's enjoying himself...when I saw the order in 89 and 93 he looked like he didn't give a flying fuck if he was performing for us...

If you don't like this aspect of the band, perhaps you should purchase your studio discs and stay home and listen to THOSE...and ONLY those...

I suspect that the New Order you love so much never actually existed, but nobody is forcing you to listen to their recent work.

Listen to this man. For he knows what he is talking about :)

Barney is going through the same thing Dave Gahan went through after he kicked the drugs and booze....a LIFE ALTERING NATURAL HIGH! That's right. Barney body is getting a reknowned boost of natural energy now that he's kicked the drugs and alchohol! I think it's absolutely wonderful too! The guy is 50 and he's prancing and dancing around like h's in his teens again. How can ANYONE be hatin' on that? Dave Gahan is in his 40s and look how he acted in the One Night In Paris concert! You'd think he'd of just gotten a shot of speed or something, but no...we is CLEAN as can be! And no one criticized his antics as far as I know.

And like Filmstardust said, it's about the music baby!!!! Unfortunately I've never seen the band live, despite having been a fan for 15 years. It's just that all my friends are into hip hop and shit like that.

I thought it was alright. Don't see what the fuss was about. Watched it on vid again last night after all these comments and it actually looked better second time around. Some of these people can't have seen New Order before, surely? Do they not remember Baywatch, 'singing' Blue Monday live on TOTP, the Fine Time acieed dance or the Touched video. I remember a gig at the Town & Country club nigh on 20 years ago when Barney spent the entire set with his hands up inside his t-shirt shadow boxing like he was trying to show the world he had a nice pair of boobies. Camus would've been spinning in his urn!

Then again, I'm an adult with a spinal chord so I didn't get my head flushed down the toilet during playtime this morning by the bigger boys who think Oasis are the daddy and New order are cock.

I sleep easy at night and leave all that fretting to the geekier element in our midst. Bless 'em!

Oasis are the daddy? Puff daddy more like.:evil4:

Just remember people, Barney is a god and can do whatever he wants on primetime TV. He'll be our dancing monkey at Hyde Park soon. Can't wait.

If you're trying to be facetious, then it's not working. No one's saying Barney is God (that would be Hooky, actually) but why grown men are throwing temper tantrums over Barney's 'dancing' is beyond me. Fcuk knows how some people deal with genuine 'issues' in their lives. I bet they threw out all their Barney underwear this weekend and scribbled his face out of their Smash Hits posters. Divs.

Like the real Châteauneuf (du Pape), I agree that this performance ages very well! I certainly see no reason to tuck the New Order pin badges inside my blazer or to eat my sandwiches from my satchel - my New Order lunchbox was on display at morning play and dinner.

Can't wait for the end of term disco (June 24th) - I'll be running on the spot with the rest of the really cool kids!

I think I'm going to get this entire thread printed up on a t-shirt. Wonderful stuff!!!:thumb:

Clayhead, I don't suppose you were in O'Donahues on Saturday night?

Not being facetious, old chap. Just serious. In the old days we loved NO for being wilfully obscure. Today we should love them for being wilfully ... er whatever it was that was going on on telly. Couldn't agree with you more about the folks getting all worked up about it. For sure it was not the polished performance you get from most bands on the telly - but what do you expect - this was New Order.

And really - I can't wait for Hyde Park.

What, did you spot an ugly twat in a New Order t-shirt? Nope, it wasn't me, but keep looking out for ugly fuckers in New Order t-shirts and we're bound to bump into one another at some point. Do you shop at Sainsbury's???

It's been known.

The reason I asked was that had you been in O'Dogs on Saturday you would have seen a balding twat in a New Order t-shirt and white trainers drunkenly doing the Barney 'Run' dance.

Couldn't have said it better myself!

I mean, I guess none of you have seen New Order live the past 15 years, what were you expecting, especially on the cheesiest, campiest song in their catalog?

And at least Barney has the right idea with the jogging. A few more kilos a day and he should slim down to his '83 self, right.

We should meet up and do the dance in unison. It'll be a winner with the ladies for sure!!:thumb:

It's a deal, though you have to agree to do that bizarre gurning as well, where Barney seems to be trying to impersonate some prehistoric fish that lurks about 4 miles below sea level.

Dignity and self-respect, my friend, do not come into it!!:D

Of course we'll be pulling the "dancing face" - otherwise people will think we're not taking it seriously.

When I went to Chicago, I was not looking for the pissed-up, pissed-off pretentious acting Barney of the old days who would not address the audience (except to insult them), then play 8 or 9 songs (or until some eqipment broke down), leave the stage without saying a word, and no encore!

From 3 16 and 5 11, I was looking for the fun-loving, freaky-dancing Barney we all know and love. When the first beats of BLT started, I said to my fiancee "Check his dancing here, it's class!" She agreed. :thumb:

Oh, I dunno - yes he's very cheery these days, but I still long for a return of the glares of withering contempt for the "punters" and the vicious put-downs. I quite enjoyed Hooky's "come on you cockney wankers!" at Finsbury, though clearly the "cockney" bit was a little beyond the pale....

Hurt my feelings, he did.

What would look sillier? 50yr old man dancing and having fun, or looking moody and angry like it was still the 80's.

I'll take the dancing anytime.

In my mind, genius which barney is has the privelege of looking like a fool.

I think i finally realized the genius of new order this weekend when blue monday played at a bar i went to this weekend. About 90% of the place was dancing and looking like asses, including myself.

i am sorry that i ever said anything bad about new order.

i was drunk when i posted, i didn't mean it.... swear to god.

new order rock.

they never do ANYTHING wrong, EVER....

Sumner's new dance is CUTE and ENDEARING, and shows how much FUN the band is having nowadays.... and, plus, he has danced like that before, so it is HISTORIC as well.... like al jarvis made me understand, I just have to be honest with myself and not worry about appearances.... it is all clear now....

You are turning into the No.1 Keyboard Warrior here, aren't you, Mr T?!

Funny, but three weeks ago, in a thread which was closed before I got chance to respond, the thread about Tim's great poptastic announcement, you actually declared you were no longer gonna hate Tim and start hating me instead?! Not sure why, exactly, but you did say words to that effect.

And there was little ol' me in TGI Fridays 10 days ago, and apparently you were in the same venue, but you never ventured over once to air your ills, whatever they might've been.

Peace, bro. Whatever your concerns, we can't all think the same. :thumb:

(i am just trying to get my post count up, and knew i could rely on you to keep me nuts here.... without aj wells, i have to argue with SOMEONE!)

it is never personal, despite what i type...
