Barney's Jig

What's with this running on the spot business Barney's taken to doing - acting like your elderly uncle pissed up at a bloody wedding? That is sadder than sad.

They're in danger of repeating what bands like the Stones did in the 80s and 90s - sullying a peerless back catalogue with comeback after pointless comeback, each time eroding the value of their body of work with fist-in-mouth embarrassing appearences like the Jonathan Ross Show.

I know a lot of people here are trying to capture the magic of the 'good old days' (or were too young at the time to witness NO live), and therefore will champion their favorite band to the hilt. Personally I feel them chipping away at my fondness for this band little by little. New Order By Numbers - a standard 4/4 beat (probably decreed by Barney), an ill-suited high octave bassline, and possibly the worst vocal performance since the later Stone Roses gigs - HEY PRESTO!! Keeps the American fans happy! And the Vikings, of course.

Care to explain that last comment, squire? And seeing as you spell 'favourite' as 'favorite' what nationality does that make you if you're having a pop at Americans?! Or can you simply not spell?!

Me too...

Er... not to see the "big"... To see the band...

Or perhaps the other "thing" is money worth, too

Unquestionably, they were fucking ridiculous. But then, haven't they always been?? Almost got into a fight with one of my cockier students the other day in the pub when he reeled out the standard "Joy Divison were great/New Order are shit/Curtis is God" routine. Had to grab him by the collar and shout "they're the same fucking band, twat face!!! Ian sang like a frog and danced like a dildo!!!"

Never mind, eh?

Yeah it's true, the performance on Ross' show was terrible, the dancing is quite embarrasing also and i'm sure most people in that audience would of thought, what the hell was that!? It seems Barney just doesn't take it serious any more, doesn't care, who knows, it's clear Steve was totally pissed off when Bernard kept wooping, the whole thing was very awkward indeed and Ana didn't fit in there at all.

We've kind of adpated to it though and try to see through it and just to enjoy it, that's the attitude around here now. No matter how bad it was it was still good seeing them.

they should kick sumner out. seriously.

he is the one bringing in the crappy Electronic type songs.

they could get that guy that sang in Monaco....

when stephen morris looks bummed, you know Sumner has to go.

I am really starting to dislike Bernard. Sometime in the early 90s, after the first (Good) Electronic lp, he started to sing like crap and get a silly ego...

his whistling, stupid monkey dancing, and teleprompter are all adding up to say "loser".

at this point, I honestly might rather just see New Order without bernard... no vocals....

and i say this with a heavy heart.

Two questions:

  1. When the fcuk has anyone ever seen Morris actually happy? Certainly never at a New Order concert in my lifetime.

  2. What did everyone make of Barney's blown-out-cheeked acieed dance on TOTP approximately 16.5 years ago?! At the time I thought it was funny as fcuk. Don't really see the difference between what he did then, and does now, sorry. I was 20 at the time so to see a 30-something dance like he was at a rave just seemed equably ridiculous.

I blame their FANS! :D

Yep, me too!! I love them, no matter how Bernard dances. In fact, the more stupid they appear, the more I love them. They're always been talentless twats, and therein lies their genius. See you all in Barca!!!

My memory is stinkin, which is a well renowned fact round these parts, but have you not been spouting this kinda shite since you started posting? What a load of absolute wank. Get rid of Barney:spit:

I haven't had a good rant on here for ages, but that nearly got me going, so you can be applauded for something.

Have to agree there.... ok so i thought the Ross performance was terrible, i got on my soapbox cause i want em to show just how fuckin ace they are to a prime time audience (and to my folks who was watching!) instead we got a bad drunken karaoke performance! Still all this get rid of Barney and slagging off Electronic bullshit is just someone or "something" trying to stir it up :nonono:

I think after that band management is gonna tell Barney to calm it down a bit.

When I first saw Stephen on one of the Live-DVDs, I thought I could see a thinking-bubble above his head with the words: "How did I get to play in this f...... band?" But now I think he is just very concentrated on his work...

well tbh i think the change in the band or development if you will is nothing short of staggering. dig out taras shevenko video and you will see what i mean. hardly any movement from barney and only a hint of a whooop, and today its a full blown work out. jogging on the spot, leg flicks ,arms punching air, little bunny hops, fucking magnificent. has anyone aproached the band to do a "workout dvd" by the way?. barney & hooky in leotards, now WHO WOULDNT pay good money to see that?? re-name tracks such as: 1:face up = sit up 2:dreams never end = treadmills never end 3:in a lonely place = in a bloaty place 4:i could go on. :evil4:

alright, yeah, I was being a bit over the top... I don't want nor expect Sumner to exit... I do tend to overplay things...

BUT, do you guys think management has the balls to mutter something to Sumner, or is he beyond criticism???

do you think Hook is frightened (seriously, not that he would ever admit it) of saying something... I mean, the only reason I ask these silly questions is because CLEARLY nobody IS saying anything to him!

(and I thought it interesting how HOok handled the question on that recent audio interview when asked about Bernards' whistling... he seemed a bit 'careful' about his answering... )

but somebody needs to explain to Sumner it is not cute, not endearing... it is just embarrassingly lame...

almost as bad as naming a song Dracula's Castle...

I think yer missing the point here. Will the management have the balls? The band are in charge of what they do, the management have fuck all to do with the music / performances.

If someone can prove me wrong, I'd love to hear it.

They, or as you would put it, Barney is enjoying himself, he's always enjoyed put himself at the centre of attention when playing live, the only tour when Hooky really started coming to the front and growling was 93, when the band were at their lowest. If you'd have been to any of the 98 shows or the GR tour you would have seen Hooky and Barney both enjoy hamming it up to the crowd....AND getting on.

They both "get into" LWTUA with the "come on" shouts. People need to chill out a wee bit and enjoy them for what they are. As long as they are still enjoying it and putting good stuff out, I'll be happy buying it and going to see them.

This Jonathan Ross performance has certainly cooked up a storm on here! I haven't seen it yet because I was out having a few Friday night beers, will catch the repeat tonight on BBC3 no doubt. Is it anything like the Canal+ performance? Cos I thought that was pretty good.

I think some fans are losing perspective here a wee bit. One dodgy TV performance and it's "The band are finished", "Barney should leave" etc. even I must say get a bloody grip. Having said that I do think Barney's whooping is getting pretty ridiculous these days, if I see them on TV and he's in full swing I normally flip between channels until the instrumental break of the song they're performing kicks in

Seriously, they should appear on the ITV show 'Hit Me Baby One More Time'. The worst comeback since Dollar.

Can I get a "WHOOOOOOOOHHH!"?

I feel sorry for Steve - he's the only one who doesn't act like every performance is the last one and therefore calls for much hamming it up and acting like a 12 year old buffoon having had too much snakebite.

I'd love to hear how they would murder a JD song like Atmosphere by partying it up - oh hang on, they already have done. Every fuckin time they've ever played it!

Hear hear! I have been saying they should go instrumental for awhile... or use spoken word passages or anything to make the approach a little fresher...

As Bernard has lost his inhibitions we come to see how important they are to keep! It was a nice process to see the band slowly open up over the years, but like the flasher who keeps dancing around in front of you as you try to divert your eyes, now all those ugly dangly parts are all on permanent show...

Its nice to see the fans waking up to this nasty reality!
