i realized that "We All Stand" is my LEAST FAVORITE song of all time.. that Peel session version..god it sounds like SHITE and it's a crap song on top of that!

"As it is when it was" from Brotherhood is more worse in my ears...

Yes, WAS is even worse than Slow Jam.

Its not even really a song... its more of an attitude... a loose, improvised, creative, open, dub influenced interesting direction that they could have pushed MUCH further...

That and Turn The Heater on from the Peel session are wonderful glimpses into what might have been had this band chosen to keep the experimental vein of their work alive...

I like both versions of We All Stand. Run Wild is their worst track if I had to name one. I guess I can see where people wouldnt like We All Stand but, I dunno, I never skip it.

And the fact that the band never branched out into other sounds like dancehall or garage rock on their newest album.

To be fair they haven't experimented THAT much over the last few years.
All they've done since the mid 80s is become more pop sounding.
Admittedly... Technique is absolute class, and I also am one of the few Republic lovers. But by this stage the band had really stopped doing 'new' things... more recycling sounds that other artists had been using, and mixing them with their own sound. Get Ready was basically, on the whole, an album full of bog standard guitar rock tracks, and the new album, although far more experimental, veers towards EXTREMELY poppy material.

You should here the live versions of We All Stand. I used to hate it as well until I heard live recordings of it. Studio 54 has a good rendition, requires thinking as Barney stated. Just another tune that lost its flavor when it went from the stage to the studio.

Of course the PCL period was the last truly experimental period of the bands work... after that they channelled the cutting edge of pop culture and then slowly congealed into elder statesment.... and it was an interesting path they took was towards convention while every one else was out in the wilderness... I loved those later periods as much as every one else, but part of me did want them to keep experimenting a bit more...

Nothing against convention, if you do it well... the problem is that this band has stated that anyone can be arty and they want to be a pop band because its more difficult... and they are proving that point... they cant sing, write or arrange properly to compete in that arena... I think we are seeing how ill equipped they are to work in their chosen field at the moment... maybe choose another field? Imagine if they had tried to play within the defined areas when they were forming and producing in their vital period... they would have been the joke they are now... the point of punk was to change the rules if they dont work for you... and they really really really need to change those rules now... the ones they have made for themselves...

"We all stand"....not one of my favorites..but my buddy that was an olympic-class long distance runner thought the song was a gem! He used to listen to it when he was close to the end of his run.

There are far worse neworder songs than "We all stand"...

'tis ironic that at the time when they are hailed as innovators left right and centre, they are churning out fairly uninspired standard pop stuff, with not a whiff of the experimental edge that got them where they are today.

that is the problem really, everyone's expectations revolve around a different era of new order rather than the safe bet they are now.

586 is the path they took that -I- LIKE. the other sounded like some lounge/jazz crap that made the Blow Monkeys look good :)

plus... experiment wise: what out there is worthy of their attention. synths are no longer this cool toy only oddball bands use. plus i seriously think once the rawness of youth goes away it's very hard to really blaze any new trails. if anyone pulls it off it's because they manage to find a producer who can give them a breath of fresh air. all of the tracks on the current album sound like NO track -should- sound. but none of them are how they -could- sound, if you catch my drift?

i did like as it was when it was until i heard it live on the retro boxset. Was killa' next to regret>.

I'm not too sure about We All Stand really. When I first heard I didn't really like it much at all. I do listen to the Pill Sessions versions now and again and I don't mind it all. I guess it's got a cool kind of experimental sound to it which I really like.

We all stand is a great track - very atmospheric. Has a similar feel to 'Riders of the Storm' by deceased piss head Jimbo Morrison and hippy pals.
