From memory of what I've read on these forums... Stephen Hague got the contract to write the song and he's the one who hired New Order to work with him on this song.
And it lead to Republic afterwards...
Yes mate...They were simply aproached to do a world cup song by the English Football association in 1990,as is the costom here every 4 years,to help the whole country get behind the team.Being football fans the guys said yes and got to work including the team in recording+Keith Allen.Apparantly all the team had a go at the Rap, and it came down to Gazza(our star player) and John Barnes.It turns out it was even worse with Gazza,who was simply too "daft as a brush" (god love the man)so Barnsy got the gig.It worked out great,was a monster hit, and raised the bar for songs of its type.Take a bow once again New Order
