Sat and listened to everything Joy Division last night. From Warsaw up to BBC Sessions. I noticed some bird did a Top 10 in the NME during the week, so I decided to give it a go.

Unfortunately I couldnae single just 10 songs out, so here is my list of songs I'd have on my Essential Joy Division CD.

I usually just pop in one of the official discs, had never made a 'best-of' for JD. Just did one though.....

Favors Unknown Pleasures over Closer, but I've a hard time conceiving of that album broken up. 'Isolation' was my favorite Joy Division track for a long time, but I will always remember that in context after hearing 'Atrocity Exhibition' and thinking to myself, 'What in God's name have I picked up? This is more extreme than PiL's Second Edition!'

I commend the job they did with Substance. Better than New Order's as far as overall track by track consistency goes.

Joy Division will always be my first really important band; the one that got me passionate about music beyond having the radio on in the background. I remember scribbling the lyrics to "Novelty" on the back of my English jotter, and thinking "Exercise one" from Still sounded like fucking nothing else I'd ever heard on this planet. I was a complete JD fanatic before I even knew New Order existed, although I'd heard the two bands mentioned in the same breath. Ian Curtis really was a genius, hands down. A talented and creative guy whose problems sadly all seemed to come together overwhelming him at the point of no return.

I still find it utterly shocking he took his life at the same point in life I'm currently at, 23 years old.
