Rock or Electronic

Seems these days that rock band after rock band are crawling out of the closet to say that they're all Joy division's doing. Rarely hear people blowing off about their electronic side so much these days. So I was just wondering, what the balance is here on NOOL, are we all hairy metal types who tolerate synths ONLY on NO. Or mayhaps we are a bunch of light toed technonerds who like to pretend all the guitar noises are samples.

so what DO you listen to apart from New order?

I'm very much electronic, but do like a bit of Primus, or king Crimson, or gong on the side.

BTW, I know it's hard to think of where to put a band like say NiN, who are both, but I gues how you categorize your listening habits is just as important as what they really are.

I reckon I can predict the result fairly well BTW :)

Mostly rock (often with electronic elements), but some solely electronic also.

Both, and everything in between. I'm reading a Clash biography and therefore in one of my Clash phases for now.

It's mainly Rock/Alternative-Stuff. I like electronic music, but I need a certain mood for that.

I listen Mostly to Rock. sometimes with electronic music there is too much going on, remixes and whatnot. i can put on a station and listen to electronic music all day, but to go and find the cd, its just too much i rather just buy the latest "rush" Album

Hey I play bass, so the only reason I DON'T listen to RUSH more than I do is that Mr Lee makes me feel inadequate....FFS at least mortals can play Hooky's lines :)

I hope you're not ticking "both" cos one of your Metalica Albums has a synth on it......both is for those who really do listen to both in equal amounts.........yes, I AM just miffed that it the results do not match my predictions.....time for spin :)

Incidentally, I had a lot of mates way back, who were total rock luddites, hated all things electronic. They used to bring round these albums with a big sign on them saying "Absolutely no synths or samplers of any kind", and I used to roll around on the floor in kinks of laughter at them as the first track would invariably open with some over the top noise SWIMMING in digital reverb and delay......ie samplers (and depending on the reverb, a synth too). They would argue "but it's not the same as a sampler, it has a keyboard", to which I countered..."so, in YOUR universe, it takes MORE talent to let the machine do it all than it does to play it"......and so on. Luddites are REALLY hard to argue with....but a lifetime of New Order does enable one to call upon the power of awkwardcuntyness when required :)

there is brilliance on both ends of the spectrum, but for some reason i think there is more brilliance surrounding electronic music with rock elements versus rock music with electronic elements, if you all follow.

I refuse to categorise what I listen to, and if I was to there'd certainly be more categories than these two! So there.

New Order should be electronic+whatever the fuck Hooky feels like doing+crazed drumming by Steve+yelping by Barney. That doesn't qualify as rock in my book.

The electronic side of NO attracted me to their distinct style of music. But, it wasn't purely electronic as New Order rarely ditch their guitars/bass even when they do up a synth track. True Faith it was: hook, line and sinker.

Once I started to delve further into their discography, I discovered that this band can do BOTH styles successfully and even fuse them together better than most other bands.

Sometimes it's the guitar tracks that I feel in the mood to hear. Other times it's the electronic tracks. New Order is New Order. I never grow tired of their sound, however you categorize it. :)

Mostly the electronic, it's what turned me on first, but it's cool that they can rock the guitars.
