After Ian's death the remaining JD members decided to find a new name for the band and to never perform any JD songs.
Can anyone tell me why and when they eventually decided to start performing JD songs in concert?
Personally I'm glad they did.

The first JD song NO played (If you discount Ceremony, IALP and the instrumentals they occasionaly did at soundchecks) was LWTUA at the Birmingham Tower Ballroom 9 May 83, which was said at the time by Barney to be for Rob Gretton's birthday. Thereafter occasional songs cropped up randomly at a few dates, notably Decades at Royal Festival Hall 14 May 84, Decades and LWTUA Amsterdam 17 May 84 (date may be significant there, certainly Hooky said so between songs). She's Lost Control was given two woeful airings at the end of 85 (Slough and Orleans) and Atmosphere was played at Central London Poly 85, then again in Paris and Leuven amongst others. Both LWTUA and Atmosphere then seemed to join the song rotation on a more regular basis. I suspect that in choosing the nightly set they may have had A list and B list songs, of which maybe 8 A list and 2 B list songs would b epicked every night, and both Atmosphere and LWTUA were treated as B list songs. It was only really the 98 dates that saw a big shift towards playing three or four JD songs - listening to the Manchester 98 shows last night (Cheers Shug :)), three of the first 6 played were JD !!

Can't think of anything worse !! Tarnishes the memory, them doing an injustice to JD songs.
They seem to perform JD songs quite well I always think. Ian's voice was so out there that Barney's semi-normal voice always 'warms up' the songs. I think that as they get older they realise how time is precious and that in leaving the JD back catalogue they are cutting their own noses off to spite their own fascias. One day they must have thought, why don't we just play the damn songs and get on with it, no-one things any less of us for doing it.
I doubt Atmosphere could ever be touched by New Order in terms its weird depth but LWTUA sounds great with Barney's silky smooth tones.
I'd pay good money to here the entire 'Closer' album played live with attention to the original musical instruments and sounds i.e. to get the original sounds. That would be something special.
To be honest, I don't really care. I used to think it was something 'special' to hear an Atmosphere or LWTUA, but frankly I'm sick and tired of the overkill on these tracks now. Perhaps if they introduced another JD track into their set it would be - fleetingly - interesting but I guess they've exhausted all the obvious choices now, bar New Dawn Fades, but then it could be said they've already played that too, with a little help from the Mobe-ster.
Frankly, I'd rather see an Age of Consent revisited. Or a Sunrise, Village or Perfect Kiss. Any of those would mean so much more to me. I'd just turned 12 when Curtis topped himself so can't really claim that the muzak mean *that* much to me, as I was more interested in Ska and 2-Tone at that time, as were 95% of my peer group in 1980.

Couldn't agree more sir. I'd much rather hear a New Order set of songs that they wrote under the guise of New Order - they've got enough of a back catlogue ! I would pay good money to see them do Decades live again though, that worked best of all I think, if anything added a bit to the song as live choice (OK, we've only got the rather embarrassing Still live version to go on maybe). Anything as long as they don't do (and ruin) She's Lost Control again !! :)

I'd pay Sultanesque money to get them to re-record Closer (keeping old vocal tracks), Movement and PCL again, maybe adding to the older songs in the way I still believe they did with Confusion and Temptation on Substance. Well aware that not everybody agrees with me on the last bit though !
yeah, would be good to see perfect kiss again. oh for the days when the set-list changed...
i thought they'd said in an interview that everyone else was doing covers & they thought "well we wrote the f***ers, so why shouldn't we play them?"

Sloppy features - I can understand yer point of view - and as you go on to say later in the thread - you'd rather they revisited AOC, Sunrise..... Totally agree mate - I'd far rather hear As it is, AOC, Sunrise.....than the JD songs, but I was only replying to the question - so don't start having a go at me or my goldfish called cyril is gonna be me dinner;) As for the recent versions of the songs - they're not that bad mate....honest:evil:
You know what would be best ? Not knowing what was coming next, and only getting an idea of things like Confusion when Barney picked up the bass. Things like Hooky strapping on the six-stringer (cue anticipation of old song), or when Barney picked up the melodica (perm one from seven or so). It really pisses me off when he announces everything and talks bollocks for 30 seconds or so before they play it !

Yeah - I agree with most of that mate - except for the bit about Barney and his talking inbetween songs, having just listened to the Cologne Show (cheers Mike) it had me in tears...The Naked Saunas - German Porn - and the gaff about Marching music - BRILLIANT, I SAY BRILLIANT
I think that Joy Division songs should be a treat, for special occasions and should certainly be unexpected, rather than being three or four of them in each set. Having said that, it was good to hear Isolation and Heart and Soul in 1998, as it made a change.
I would like to hear them do Decades again, instead of Transmission which doesn't work I think, and maybe Digital would be quite funny and easy to play. They won't though :(
They won't do Digital for the simple reason that there wouldn't be enough time for Barney to whoop between riffs !

Can you imagine Barney trying to sing this, and play the guitar at the same time? I can't - it would certainly be interesting though;)
I can safely say I would hate to hear Digital played now, or Disorder or any of those JD guitar tracks. The intensity has gone, even Transmission sounds lame in comparison, it's lost the rough edge these days that gave it that special feel.
