6 string is a shergold marathon 4 string is an eccleshall

I suppose I should tell him to look at www.shergold.co.uk eccleshall have a website too.

Hooky's Eccleshalls are partial hollow body semi accousics, which when one considers that even a full accoustic bass guitar is nigh on silent, we can assume he uses it partly to get the lovely resonant sound, and partly cos he's an auld duffer ( note 5:11, the 6 string is only used when ESSENTIAL, and he takes it off quick, and sits down playing it too).

You can spot gigs with the clone theory, just check out most gigs from the 80's. While Hooky usually uses a noise gate it's not all the time, and anyway a Clone in a bad mood has a signal to noise ratio of about 2dB, so the gate is useless. Therefor the Clone is easily spotted by the telltale washing machine fx it makes ( either wooosh wooosh woooosh or wwrrwwrrrwwwrrwwrrwwrrwr, depending on it's exact state of mind) in between songs.I used to have one, had it nicked and then about 5 years later found out it was what hooky used and that the only reason I never got it to sound right was that I had a repulsively clean and well behaved amp.

Oh, and his current rig is not as huge as it looks, it's actually 2 identical rigs so when one blows up he can switch to the other in a second. That's not to say he cannot and does not run them in paralell when he REALLY wants to piss bernard off.

EDIT, should mention that he has lots of basses ( he's a bassplayer with money, no surprises there, apart from the bare fact of it I suppose), and that he's used a Fender and a Yamaha at times on one or two songs. Had a Rickenbacker (made from recycled cathedrals and spent uranium, best avoided unless you are Hooky or Lemmy, or that really scarey chick in the Bangles, tho I really hope she never REALLY played one, it takes a grip that can turn coal to diamond). Also been seen posing with a gibson, probably just the in house stunt-bass, on some kids show.

Only if you are a bassplayer with ambitions/delusions of Godhood :) Else, just remember to avoid all of us geeks at gigs.

yeah seem to recall he gets through a lot of necks, including one he broke PLAYING!!! don't pick a fight with him!

I read about the guy down in the Southwest, and was really freaked when I seen Eccleshall were based in London....perhaps that is just there offices?

Anyway that wannabe from the cure bought one just to look and sound like Hooky, still imitation is the best form of flattery they say.
