i done a bit of dj ing at Shugzv's 30th birthday'i played Temptation BLT Round & Round my top three NO Track's ..
Considering I only have to take the 'at a club that played only 80's music bit' into consideration (I occasionally DJ, usually really bad times in shitey suburban 'clubs')....

I just meant in general terms but since you're a DJ I can understand your sentiments and the whole "playing to the crowd" idea which will widely vary from states to countries, I suspect.

LOL, yes you;ve unearthed one of the few true prejudices I hold. I've produced too many tracks for DJ's I think. Coupled with the obvious fact that a well know DJ can make several thousand pounds from a record that the band got 50p for, they spent years learning to play, and weeks writing and recording that tune, and he lifts a tone arm onto it. There is no justice I tell ya, no justice.

Its even better making a hundred pounds for a night knowing that in total, about 50p will go to the artists for the entire night.
Tonearm? Bah. Its even easier than that thesedays. I DJ off a Thinkpad....
EDIT: The irony starts to pile on when yer standard nightclub DJ, being paid to play other peoples work, plays something that a vaguely more creative performance DJ has mangled out of someone elses work, which in some cases was nicked in the first place.
This gives me a guilty pleasure when I play Maniac 2000, knowing that Michael Sembello probably saw a few pence from that song being Irish number one for an entire summer...
yeah I probably should have said there are some DJ's who can actually create, The Orb, Coldcut, Shadow, to name just those I like:) Mr 2grand an hour to make track a go the same speed as track b is a different creature entirely.
DJ'ing off of a thinker is good, but I'll tell you what, If I see one more fooker billed as "live electronic" and see that it's just one guy standing smugly behind a lapper, I may lose my mind.
It's ALMOST enough to bring the slightlynarrow out of hiding for a hit and run "teach the kiddies that to make a big noise you gotta get more machines, and get mental wit em" gig. To me a live electronic rig has look like Gillans old rig or Orbital's ( OR at a push, feature a couple of hideously large steam powered modulars). Two gits, a DAT and a lapper could be playing a tape and browsing porn for all I know.

I fear I had to play "Blue Monday 83" (even though I don't like it), "True Faith" and the "Sub-Culture" 12" (as on "Substance") I refuse to play newer tracks in an 80s only club ;) )

Now, you can occasionally get away with a weird track that you like but the crowd doesn't at certain occasions
On NYE 2004 I got away with two versions of Here To Stay - the Felix Da Housecat remix earlier in the night, and then the Extended Instrumental directly after midnight
However, when someone gets you to play 80's music, you play 80's music... nothing else. And thats why I divide my HDD by year....
I did play Crystal (Digweed & Muir), Out of control (original) and Here to stay (Felix da Housecat extended) during my DJ period.

Blue Monday Confusion Pump Panel Er, and then I'm struggling for a third: perhaps one of the recent mixes of Crytal or Here To Stay.
If someone can show me how they dance to the likes of Temptation and Ceremony without the elbows and knees going up then I'll take me hat off to them. You don't 'dance' to such songs as a rule.
Anyways, WTF is 80's music?! Isn't that, like, 2-tone or Acid House?!

Mrs garymac reliably informs me that both me and ourkid will do the same ' dance ' to all three , I asked if this was a fine example of grace / economy of movement , she elaborated further that whilst economy of movement is a factor , the movement on display is generaly an affront to both good taste and Newton's law .
After 20 years,we have yet to have our first dance as a couple :(

I'm fond of playing VIDEO 5 8 6 with a medley of other NO tracks over it - it can work out pretty well with tracks like EGG and Vanishing Point or the LP mix of 5 8 6. But that wouldn't necessarily be a good idea at your average 80's club.
If I was playing to the crowd, BM, True Faith and BLT (Shep Pettibone's Extended Dance Remix). If I was playing whatever I wanted, then TPK, Mr Disco and Hurt.

Or for those of us with no major interest in buying acres of vinyl, using decks, etc.
A few years ago Van Helden did that public demo for Pioneer, showing what was possible off CD - vinyl quality, basically. Decent soundcard, decent software (one that works entirely in floats, and not ints, if possible) and you'll get away with using a laptop to all but the most discerning audience - e.g. every damn person in a club, any night of the week.

I would have bought this laptop anyway - I need one (I'm a programmer). It did cost 'thousands of dollars', but only because I wanted a powerful (for the time), small (still) and sexy (somewhat still) machine. I don't 'rip the tracks off some website'. Quality wouldn't be good enough, plus the performance liability waiver fee (which I pay, bugger all that it actually is these days) is invalid on tracks you don't legally own. So I have crates of CD's. Some are burns, but they're burns of selected tracks off CD's that I own.
On the laptop side of things, tracks are ripped using LAME 3.96/SSE with --vbr-new -q0, varying on 256Kbits/sec. This gives what has been shown, in the same kind of double blinds that vinyl DJ's love to quote, to be indistinguisable from CD. However, the 128Kbits/sec

This hasn't been an issue for two to three generations of CD decks - they buffer significant periods of time to RAM, often as much as 32MB a deck - thats about 2 MINUTES. One hell of a skip to take 2 minutes to recover...

When your playing to a club full of drunken idiots, the extremely minor quality difference, which I can't perceive myself, isn't worth it. There are also some electronic tracks that I feel are significantly INFERIOR off vinyl, such as most of Fatboy Slim's first album (which I have on vinyl... I also do have good quality decks which I no longer use for DJ'ing)

I was talking about the mixing software mainly. There is nothing more accurate than a Technics 1200 turntable.

There are some poorly mixed down tracks on vinly but you're the DJ...you got gains and equalizers to work with.

Most DJs know the difference right away when doing certain things. I noticed it when QBERT was demoing them in Miami.
I don't hate them by any means but they have yet to surpass a 1200.

Like I said before to each his own. I would only mess with the pioneers and now the numarks but the 1200 is the first and foremost for me.

I know I'm joining in late, but if I were plying to the crowd (or rather, club) I'd have to go for BLT, BM and Temptation.
If I were playing for myself, or even if it were the 'warmup' of the early night, I'd play Everything's Gone Green, Confusion and Perfect Kiss.
When I was living back in Cincinnati, my DJ friend, Bob,
would play lots of NO. I had the pleasure of dancing to BM, TF, BLT, Touched (pretty hard to dance to!), Perfect Kiss, Fine Time, Subculture and MTO.

Also, he'd play Electronic (Disappointed; Getting Away With It), Revenge (Slave; Pineapple Face).
