I'm fond of playing VIDEO 5 8 6 with a medley of other NO tracks over it - it can work out pretty well with tracks like EGG and Vanishing Point or the LP mix of 5 8 6. But that wouldn't necessarily be a good idea at your average 80's club.
If I was playing to the crowd, BM, True Faith and BLT (Shep Pettibone's Extended Dance Remix). If I was playing whatever I wanted, then TPK, Mr Disco and Hurt.

Or for those of us with no major interest in buying acres of vinyl, using decks, etc.
A few years ago Van Helden did that public demo for Pioneer, showing what was possible off CD - vinyl quality, basically. Decent soundcard, decent software (one that works entirely in floats, and not ints, if possible) and you'll get away with using a laptop to all but the most discerning audience - e.g. every damn person in a club, any night of the week.

Especially if its the original single/International edit they're reacting to... I do try and play it, but often find that I hit the Ext. Instrumental instead...

I'll let you slide on the Pioneers but Van Helden was not a good example and he still uses vinyl...I take Q BERT instead.
Numark makes a better CD turntable too...check it out.

I would have bought this laptop anyway - I need one (I'm a programmer). It did cost 'thousands of dollars', but only because I wanted a powerful (for the time), small (still) and sexy (somewhat still) machine. It gets a bit massive with the CD drive attached, but its unlikely I'll be ripping a track whilst playing (See below about performance liability)

I don't 'rip the tracks off some website'. Quality wouldn't be good enough, plus the performance liability waiver fee (which I pay, bugger all that it actually is these days) is invalid on tracks you don't legally own. So I have crates of CD's. Some are burns, but they're burns of selected tracks off CD's that I own.
On the laptop side of things, tracks are ripped using LAME 3.96/SSE with --vbr-new -q0, varying on 256Kbits/sec. This gives what has been shown, in the same kind of double blinds that vinyl DJ's love to quote, to be indistinguisable from CD. However, the 128Kbits/sec

This hasn't been an issue for two to three generations of CD decks - they buffer significant periods of time to RAM, often as much as 32MB a deck - thats about 2 MINUTES. One hell of a skip to take 2 minutes to recover...

From tests done by the same magazines that claim that 1,000 quid a metre cable is noticably better than 5 quid a metre cable. Right. When your playing to a club full of drunken idiots, the extremely minor quality difference, which I can't perceive myself, isn't worth it. There are also some electronic tracks that I feel are significantly INFERIOR off vinyl, such as most of Fatboy Slim's first album (which I have on vinyl... I also do have good quality decks which I no longer use for DJ'ing)

He was still Pioneers test case. Did the demo off their current CD deck system, did it again off vinyl. Some large number of wanke... ehh.. 'audiophiles' listening, unable to readily identify which was which.

I was talking about the mixing software mainly. There is nothing more accurate than a Technics 1200 turntable.

There are some poorly mixed down tracks on vinly but you're the DJ...you got gains and equalizers to work with.

Most DJs know the difference right away when doing certain things. I noticed it when QBERT was demoing them in Miami.
I don't hate them by any means but they have yet to surpass a 1200.

Like I said before to each his own. I would only mess with the pioneers and now the numarks but the 1200 is the first and foremost for me.

I know I'm joining in late, but if I were plying to the crowd (or rather, club) I'd have to go for BLT, BM and Temptation.
If I were playing for myself, or even if it were the 'warmup' of the early night, I'd play Everything's Gone Green, Confusion and Perfect Kiss.
When I was living back in Cincinnati, my DJ friend, Bob,
would play lots of NO. I had the pleasure of dancing to BM, TF, BLT, Touched (pretty hard to dance to!), Perfect Kiss, Fine Time, Subculture and MTO.

Also, he'd play Electronic (Disappointed; Getting Away With It), Revenge (Slave; Pineapple Face).
