No, it's still fabulous. The technology's a bit rinky-dink, but that's all part of it's charm.
A winner, for sure, and I would shit myself if they churned it out at Hyde Park.
Classic indeed. Contains one of my favourite Hooky basslines, has delicious sequencer bits and the lyrics are a lot of fun. :D

Fourth best track off PCL, but arguably their first song to fully step out of JD's shadow. And no, I'm not overlooking Temptation or Age of Consent by saying such. Great track, but it has competition, which is the best part of the '82-'83 era in that they were setting a new precedent for excellent songwriting.
Love it. Almost makes me forget about suffering through We All Stand. Oh wait - I have it on CD and skip WAS. Nevermind.
Taped PC&L for my car (mk III Cortina 1600 xl in beige with brown vinyl roof!) tape player in 84. Memories of driving to work with that song full blast! Ah.... Blank tapes, and having to write the track names on the inlay card in your best hand writing.... kids today, dont know they`re born!
One of my favorites from that album. Barney once said it was their attempt to make a Kraftwerk song.
me too still love it ~ especially in the spring - not b/c of the flowers bit but because spring brings changes/yearnings for change. in 83-84, i was too young to make any changes and was well stuck where i was, so i honed on these lines...

don, I wished you'd flagged this up a couple of hours earlier, would've loved the excuse to throw one of my personal faves at you amongst all the other shonky fare. despite the hints, I don't think it's high enough in the back-catalogue pecking order for us to get it at hyde park. now that would be a surprise ending - unlike the tribute film. check your e-mail - let me know if your hotmail account accepts my 'packages', otherwise I'll point you to a webspace.

Pah...labels....amatuers! i used the Sherlock homes method.....I could tell the difference between say...kilkenny 83 (good village that nite...something about "when Gillian finally stops" or something) and NEC89, purely by the number and type of fingerprints and other scars on the otherwise identical TDK D90s. Labels indeed.

A truly great song, Hooky's bass is brilliant although it is mixed way to low. I would love to hear a live version of it. Someone should do a remix and bring Hooky's basline out in front where it belongs.

Classic NO form. Gillian, Barnry, Hooky and Steve doing what they do best. Much rather have had them play this than TBTGOH during the previous tour.
Funnily enough, The Village and 586 were the first two tracks off PC&L that I really got into, to be overtaken by YSF, Leave Me Alone and Ultraviolence eventually (never liked AOC). Yes, it's definitely a classic of its time.
I was always intrigued by the fact that in 1983 we got "The Village" and then "The Beach" - which made me wonder if it was just coincidence or if New Order were really fans of weird 1960s TV series The Prisoner. But then they go and throw a spanner in the works with "Ultraviolence" which was a title we have never ever previously come across despite being a word first used in the film "A Clockwork Orange".
