Its all very well to commemeorate the passing of Joy Divison and Ian Curtis, but its also 25 years since New Order came into being. So lets be positive and lets celebrate the greatest bands 25 years of existance. Cheers, may there be many more years, albums, singles, and live performances.
I expect a huge celebration in two years, when it'll be THIRTY YEARS since Joy Division started. There'll be no doubt between the commemoration of Ian and celebrating New Order, it will be just the celebration of the start of it all, Joy Division and New Order. There'll be a couple of minor doubts about the right year to celebrate, because the Stiff Kittens were already active in 1976 (though they weren't really Joy Division, just Bernard and Peter with a mate) and I think the beginning of Joy Division's career is commonly perceived as being 1978, but Warsaw became Joy Division in 1977, and being the same year of the punk explosion (though punk began a good year earlier) if Warners are clever enough will cash in the 30th anniversary, hopefully with a new box set updated after WFTSC and the next album which should be released next year, most of all this time including really interesting material like demos and unreleased tracks, and possibly some special gigs too, with different set lists, guests like former punk and Factory artists etc. It's just a dream, I know, but let's hope something remotely similar to this happens...
I think 78 comes from UP and nothing more. So, we need to think when NO came into existance. some would say ceremony ( jan81???) but they've always been a live band to me, so I would like to suggest that the date of their first gig as NEWorder would be a good centrepoint for our festivities. I will not give any date here, cos some bugger will know beter, so experts....when was the FIRST NO gig?
What can we do? i can't play NO any louder any more often.

On the arranged day, at the appointed time, all of us, all over the world open our windows, turn the stereo as high as it can go before you get shot, and play Ceremony. I would suggest BM cos it would make more noise, but I doubt it wuold receive unanimous approval.
Amidst all this ballyhoo, you all seem to have overlooked the imminent 10th Anniversary of ANOTHER key event in the band's illustrious history.....

as long as they don't end their career playing at county fairs.
Ah come on AW, that's about the only shot I've got of seeing them here. In fact, we've started tapping the Brits with Cyndi Lauper this year! 
I would love them to end their career playing county fairs - at least I'd get the chance to see them at a proper UK gig!
I don't know the exact date we should be celebrating. I fear we may have already missed it.
Should we go with their first rehersals, which according to Mojo took place the week after Ian's wake, or should we go with the meeting where they decided on their new name. Unfortunately I don't have a date for that, should we go with the date of the Western Works Demo (BTW the date of this in the discography here has to wrong, I should have that at home somewhere), or should we go with their first gig of Jul 29, 1980?

*Unknown Pleasures was released in 1979, probably people think they formed in 1978 because they don't know much about what happened before, also since they hadn't released any singles yet (apart from the few self made EPs)...

Please help me out here? I can vaguely remember a NO competition run by BBC Radio 1 in about 1990 during which Hooky asked a question [the fifth of five]. the question was something along the lines of...... Under what name, i.e who were they billed as, did NO perform their first ever gig?
I missed the answer at the time and have not managed to find it since.....

One could date their life together as New Order a few weeks after Curtis left this realm. Was the Scamps (Blackpool) their first gig as NO - September 1980 - or was there an earlier one?
