Barney's whistle

I don't like it. I REALLY don't like it.

It may be an astonishing specimen, but people should know when to use their whistle and when not to. Like in the privacy of their own home, not in front of thousands of people.

It may be big, but it ain't clever.

Wish he'd stop it.

He's probably just excited to realize that all those people are there for New Order and he can't control himself...or maybe it's a secret signal to someone? It doesn't bother me as much as you. Now if he whistled on the albums, then we'd have a problem!

Perhaps it's the signal for the autocue-director when the thing runs to slow or to fast for him (Barney)...

I love Barney's whistles and whoops and I'd welcome a few of them on record too. I've found myself humming the piano tune from Jetstream under the shower, and adding "hey!" just like Barney does before whistling on the Canal Plus performance... It just makes the whole start of the song much better than on the album, it's a blast of fool energy... wonderful, hearing it right now... HEY!

Dance music all night long! Where did it all go wrong?

Barney does woop on quite a few songs. Listen to Brotherhood. I personally love that album. The layered chorus vocals along with the odd little woop on Weirdo is just lovely.

When first listening to that BBC live record (for many years it was the only live recording I had)I used to think who is that idiot who keeps whistleing, until I found out it was Barney. I don't mind it now.

hmmm....I like Barney's whistle, but I don't like your post hmmmm...people should know when to post and when to just talk to themselves at home....makes a lot of sense eh?:D

Something seriously wrong that night (assumin this a few weeks ago you seen em). From the boot, you can hear there is HUGE headroom on the soundsytem, the bloody thing is ticking over(f*ing enormous no doubt, but ticking over).....leaving plenty of room for Barney to get much louder. Also whatever way the mics were setuo, every time he moved his vocal dissapeared. Sort the feedback out turn the mic up put a LIMITER on ALL of them, especially the gruesome twosome at the front.

oh and....

Get a smaller rig and turn the bloody thing up. <<< this is a big thing these days, in the name of quality bands hire insanely oversized rigs and run them at idle. it works to an extent, but if taken too far and/or done poorly you get results like barney whistling people into an early grave.

Oh yeah, definitely, I love the prototypes of whoops on older records, from EGG to Lonesome Tonight etc. But I was referring to the final contemporary whoops which I don't think they appear on any studio recording... Nic, please add these posts in the forthcoming Whoopology section of the site... ;)

Yeah I know what you mean, the whoops when performing live are a bit over the top.
