There was a thing about U2 in the Manchester Evening News at the weekend. It was going on about the first time U2 came to Manchester and they visited the Hacienda (it was shut) and generally went on to anyone who would listen (ie noone) about how great Joy Division were.

Pricks.

i loved U2 back in the '80s, then i realized how bloody sycophantic bono is and it totally turned me off. they have some good songs, but bono just pisses me off--patti smith was my hero for a day when she ripped into him after he presented her with the NME lifetime achievement award.

Live 8 is rubbish-it's not going to help anyone. But that's a bit off-track. I saw this coming-it happens all the time. Bono and U2 seem like they have to be everwhere.
They owe everything to New Order, Joy Division, R.E.M... It seems like they worship just about every band. They probably even hate most of these bands, it's just the attention.

Who cares how much U2 owe their success to JD anyway? I mean, much of their pompous, overblown stadium fodder is overbearing enough, much less Bono's sanctimonious preaching and whatever degree of ironic post-modernistic pilfering is allowed to pass muster these days.

And why haven't Holland Dozier and Holland sued their arses off for their Vertigo nicking lock stock and barrel the tune to You Keep Me Hanging On? Why has this appalling act of larceny gone unpunished?

I have no one but myself to blame for turning my brother into a big U2 fan, after I brought the 11 O'Clock Tick Tock single home (bought of course cause M. Hannett produced it); one listen and he was hooked. Myself, definitely not a fan of the politics and Bono's histronics, though I don't mind a number of their tunes, saw them live on the Elevation tour and Where The Streets Have No Name definitely got the crowd going beserk in a big way.
