I was just reading someone's profile about how they got a new order album as a present ten years ago and the rest was history. Anyone got a good story behind their introduction to New Order?
I bought Substance to impress a boy but fell in love with New order instead...

A friends friend introduced me to NO (and other great stuff like The Smiths) when I was 15. 1982 that is.

First heard New Order in 1986 on the way to the Winter Formal my Freshman year of high school. It was Bizarre Love Triangle and I instantly fell in love; not with my date but with New Order. Since I wasn't old enough to drive we had to hitch a ride with some Seniors and ended up getting lost for a while. Ahhhh. The good old days.....
Late one night listening to the legendary Peel, 1982:
Spaketh Ravenscroft: "this is the new single from New Order...", then playing Temptation (the full original 12" of it). Knowing a bit about them already and also being vaguely acquainted with Joy Division didn't stop the world tilting on its axis a little more at that point.
Sought it out sometime later somehow (no promotion etc) and then came Blue Monday...

I did like how Steven Gerrard dedicated the Champions League win to both Peelie and Emlyn Hughes. Nice touch.
I remember as a teenager in 83-84 being thrown around a funfair at vomit inducing speeds to the sound of an amazing song; i found out it was called Blue Monday. A sneaking interest was born.
Then between 83-87 I kept hearing these brilliant songs that Radio 1 would only play about once a week - eventually I discovered that they were all by a band called New Order. A casual fan was born.
Then in The Gulf I was trapped on a compound in 1990-91 with close to eff all music. Stumbled across a cheapo copy of Substance. Played it - was dissapointed - but had to keep playing it for some reason. Eventually fell in love with it. A hunger was born.
1992 onwards, discovered my bessie mate was a closet NO fan - I bought the whole back catalogue and also discovered the Joyous Division. An obsessive was born!
Id heard Blue Monday when it was first in the charts spring 83 but i think at such a young age id been put off by the TOTP performance.Later that year when it re entered the charts i went out and bought it though.But that was as far as it went until my Bro bought P,C&L and Age Of Consent was the song that really got me hooked much more than Blue Monday.That type of sound was more appealing to me than Blue Monday.
I used to go to this church youth club, it was all the usual crap, wham, Black lace, all the things the 80's should BURN for. TYhen once a week I started noticing this OTHER tune, it went on for ages, and shook the room and sounded like nothing else I'd ever heard.
Eventually I cracked and asked the DJ what the hell it was ( I'd concluded it was most likely a rare mix of a Hazel Dean track!!!!?!???!!!?)..."Oh that" says he "That's Blue Monday by New Order, I don't like it that much but it FUCKS the lights over big time, makes the place look crazy".
still took me another 3 months to find and buy it.....with out the net or any experience to guide you, buying your first NO record was hard.....and subsequent ones were a piece of cake. These days they think their fans are retards who need the name on the cover
Had heard Joy Division's Transmission in 79, and then started lookin for any info and records I could after that, which wasn't always easy for awhile.

my first intro to NO was in junior high in fort collins, when a group of girls did a talent show dance to BM in 1986. i thought it was a cracking song, but had no idea who sang it. didn't become a fan, though, until the next year when true faith came out and i bought substance. when i found out BM was on the album the mystery was solved!
Well, of course I knew Blue Monday and Bizarre Love Triangle, but I couldn't say who did those songs.
In 1988, I won a contest on the radio, 5 tape/LPs of my choice... one of them was the soundtrack of Bright Lights, Big City that I bought ESPECIALLY for True Faith.
I don't remember why, but I know I bought it for that song and Brian Ferry's track...
I wasn't a fan, but it was my first New Order related item.
In 1990, I met a guy who made me listen into New Order, he gave me a mixed tape and the rest is history... this guy is the co-webmaster of this website, Sébastien.
I then started to buy things, visit used record shops, etc... the first album I bought is Substance, the last one was Movement while in Toronto in 1993 for seeing the band live for the first time... so it took me 3 years to buy all the albums...
If you would have told me back then that I would actually meet the band, I would have said you were crazy... but damn it, I did it ! life gets stranger every day, isn't it? ;)

Uncly John always had the Order and JD on in me Grans ALL the time, AIIWIW & Sunrise from the Whistle Test (again which John had on constantly) sparked my interest. True Faith 87 was when I became a proper fan at the age of 12. First album PCL at 13 and first gig NEC 89 at 14.

1st thing I heard was Blue Monday when it came out in 83. The one that got me hooked was Ceremony which I heard at college later in 83. 1st gig was Blackburn King Georges Hall. Can't believe it's 22 years and 5 stones ago! (Still in shock that someone on here thinks they should stop gigging)
