new Order are shite evertime they play live. it's only the alcohol and friends that make the event worthwhile.

They made a pigs cock of 3 songs, everything else was wonderful, one of the best gigs i've heard them do.

so they've played the same set (nearly) for how long now. they should have it down to a science at this point and who doesn't know the lyrics to Blue Monday?

So fans of bands who can actually perform live never talk about the shows like: OMG, the were so good tonight, ___ nailed the intro perfectly OR..did you hear the extended intro to _______ it was sublime. Why do New Order fans feel like they need to excuse their inability to perform live? I love the band to death and my displeasure with their live abilities doesn't affect my opinion but it's frustrating that they basically do MIME the show. Tons of prerecorded stuff, predictable set list and an increasingly predictable choice of "banter" between songs. The truth is: New Order cannot play live but they are my favorite band anyway. It's fun to see them but they are embarrasing themselves these days. Bring on the Vegas stage!

Look. Barney is shy, he does not want to be a front man. He does not have vocalist disease.

He fucks up right left and centre, the rest of them rarely do. I would rather hear someone screw up like that and show the music comes from within, than have them go thru the motions ("get it down to a science" as you put it....it's an art). They were enjoying themselves tonight and that SHINES outta tem more than any other band, because they never fake it.

As for bands that play flawlessly live all the time....

And yes I am TRULY upset by the HD recorder on stage, it is disgusting to have a tape when a living machine could play the part and offer the performer more options as well as creating a few of it's own (the slightlynarrow's machines are considered full band members). The most offensive thing about it is that way back when they were the legend that NEVER mimed, their gear was clunky and explosive. Now the machines needed to pull that off completely live should be reliable.....but no, stick it on tape so it's the same every night.

that's not to say his personality defects don;t run to 15 heavy volumes......but he's not afflicted with THAT particular disorder, loathesome as it is.

I think Barney tries too hard when singing. He should be more firm like Ian during JD songs. Its like the vocals lack attention in JD songs but he cries for attention in other songs.

Spot on my friend. If you saw a band like this at the pub say they would have the p*ss taken out of them big time or even beaten up. What was he singing on Run Wild? (something about "satan"?). and he just messed up so many times. Thats a shame as the Finsbury Park gig 3 years back was pretty flawless. I think they should call it a day on gigging. Hope they do better in front of 100,000 Glastonbury revellers tonight!

I would rather hear a band which doesnt go out of its way to fuck up songs. I mean they must have played these songs hundreds of times and most of joe public could play these songs. So why do they get intros, words, sound levels so wrong? All they really need is a bit more conviction. The joking between songs takes away the magic of the music.

I listened to the webcast, & I thought they were top class! I love when Bernard fucks up the lyrics - makes them up on the spot - Otto Q. kinda bores me caus he spends more time reading it than relaxing & playing. With the machenary f-ed up the band relaxed more & sounded great to these ears

Neither shite nor great. Enjoyed BLT, LWTUA, WFTSC, Transmission but....

...no surprises. Look, I know the subject has been done to death but WHY play the likes of BM any more? They don't like it, Barney can't be arsed to remember when to come in, so what's the point. I don't for a minute believe that the recd company requires them to play the 'big hits' only, and even if they did, there's nothing to stop them playing non-programmed guitar-based stuff like AOC, Ceremony, Lonesome Tonight, Leave Me Alone, once in a while. They don't look like they're enjoying playing at least half of their songs anymore. They've got a (great) new album out - where's I Told You So? They would have that programmed in. Where's Who's Joe? When I first heard that, I imagined it blowing the world apart live, with that massive chorus. Where's Working Overtime? That would be a cracking irreverent romp and would liven up the set hugely. I don't expect it's gonna be like seeing them in the 1980's, obviously not. They're older and they're not hungry anymore. I don't begrudge them cruising through a set on autopilot, they don't owe us anything. It just saddens me that a group that still have what it takes to make great music (proof = the new album) simply can't be bothered to take a risk or two live. A band that were once afraid of nothing, are now reduced to this. I question the idea of doing the JD stuff anymore. Transmission and LWTUA escaped relatively unmangled apart from Barney's ridiculous shouts and whoops in the latter. (Side point : I only realised last night that Steve plays the rhythm for this in the faster 'disco' style of the B-side version, rather than the A-side double hi-hat. It also sounds good with the synth line played in an octave lower.) Anyway...they didn't seem to want to do She's Lost Control and it dragged. Barney simply can't sing Atmosphere either.

So I'm confused - I genuinely don't understand why they're going through the motions like this. As artists who have just proved that they're still up there with the best EVER on the new album, how can this live bollocks be fulfilling to them? What did I expect really? With all the reports of the foreign gigs, I expected to be disappointed. And I was. I'm just disappointed to be disappointed when they still mean so much to me.

Yeah some of the setlist choices are a bit disappointing but nothing we can really do about it, and I think that what was there was great! Didn't notice the rain at all, and I felt proud holding up 12' of Lowlife and Closer which I picked up earlier in the day. Saw Peter Saville wandering around after the gig, got my Closer sleeve signed! One of the best nights ever!

Really wasn't bothered about Barney messing up the lyrics. Looks like the autocue had the night off and we should cut Barney a bit of slack - 25 yrs of substance abuse may have affected his ability to remember the words but he still writes cracking songs and we should be grateful for that!

While I like the fact that they do some JD stuff what hacked me off most last night was some of the audience turning it into a bloody singalong, like LWTUA is NO's 'Angels'...hated that, swear I could feel Ian turning in his grave and was embarrassed and wished I wasn't there at that point. Or am I just being an old fart?

NO weren't shite. Their equipment was. I think the 'twat' statement on the mixing desk was apt

Glad you mentioned that Delilah, I dislike JD soungs being presented as "the big rock number". And it's not just the crowd who are to blame, Barney's constant "c'mon"ing is a pain. I really wish they would leave the JD songs alone, they were written for Ian's voice and very few suit Barney.And they NEVER play the ones that would.

I'm bored of explaining the set-list thing to some people around here. I get the feeling that those who understand have already grasped it, and the rest never will no mater how often i repeat it. But one more time anyway....

No excuse for not playing anything accoustic. The old electronic based peices require rebuilding from the ground up to play on current cack, lots fo work. If anyone wants to tell me what a piece of piss this would be....download one of the NO midi files from here (which is more than they have for most songs) and see how long it takes you to make it sound like a perfect NO instrumental. Of course, I don't much care for the studio-perfect mimed backing tapes, I'd rather they lashed up something to play the song in whatever form.

Oh,,,,,I would very much appreciate those who say NO suck like posting a list of bands who play perfectly live, cos I would really love to hear such a thing. Of course I suspect susch thing comes somewhere between Hobby-horse shite and chicken's pish on the rarity scale. Points deducted if band dont have to play to sequencers ( cos it means they have no external timebase to work to and can drift out of time without anyone noticing) Not quite like that Hull or swansea gig where they play accoustic for 2 mins before machines drop back in in PERFECT time....yeah shite.

well i just about made it to a pub in picadilly after for 10.45.Anyway without getting involved in the technical side of things,i had a stomping good time and i am bloody sure the vast majority of people did.at the end of the day thats all that matters.Extremely worth a trip down from Lancashire

I don't mind the JD songs like, but I don't think Atmosphere translates well live (even in the Joy Division days) just seems more suited to its studio production. But still they ones they do are kind of JD's 'hits'. It would be good to hear something like New Dawn Fades or 24 Hours if we have to hear songs by them.

I was just glad to be there. First NO gig since Wembley Dec 87.

Good to speak to those that I managed to talk to. Shame I had to meet someone and by the time we got back to the pub it was rammed and just uncomfortable.

I just wish that they would play a couple of tracks from Technique. David Sultan told me that they played EGG in the soundcheck, so why the hell can't they play it in the gig?

Anyhow, I really enjoyed it apart from the rain and the fact that I simply over heated. At least there was only a slight drizzle when they were on as opposed to the depuge earlier on.

For the down the front moshability and an event it was great and was most enjoybale (so good i was going up and down on a sprained ankle)! Musically as a gig I dont even think the most ardent fans can make the usual excuses how bad it was, therefore SHITE!

He's not half bad at transmission I'll grant you, but he'd be a lot better at some of the songs that Ian sang in a mor Barney voice, mainly the earlier ones. I dunno if you ever heard NO playing No love lost in a soundcheck, but they are fucking incredible at it (mind you they are less shittered at the soundcheck so most things sound better).

Phill needs his fucking hands chopped off BTW for the wankery in temptation. I have no prob with him doing it, but doing anything unpredictable while any singer is at work is stoopid......nobbying about with yer gated keyboard while BARNEY is singing is just cruel.

Seriously tho, if you want a band to come on, shout "lets all rock and rool, i love it here in (where are we)" adn batter out a cd-perfect album.....you are in the wrong place.

And another thing, what's this "getting worse" crap? If anything I'd say they hit the highs (or at least avoid the lows) a tiny bit more than in their earlier days. Tho perhaps a senior Viking could comment on that as I'm only going by bootlegs.

Oh, and you may be wondering why I am so annoyed about this given my recent rantings about Barney. But my prob with Barney is not that he ballses up, CERTAINLY not that he gobshites inceasantly, and not that he sabotages songs he ( and most of the core audience) hate. Nope I only get angry at him when he does all that, then glares at hooky(or steve, gills or phil) for making an error....like some great conductor just heard the principle violin screech in the albert hall.....then he continues to waddle along screwing up at random and being happy about it.

I actually think NO ar the most coherent band I like in live terms. Most of the others not only make all the usual messes, but have the added joy of a mutable arrangement on the tracks to deal with. the Orb for instance could shame New Order in terms of fuckups per hour, and I love them.

Steve - I understand the problems of re-programming the old electronic stuff. On the other hand if they wanted to do a few of them, it COULD be done. My point is, WHY are they content to restrict themselves to a limited pool of material from such an amazing back catalogue.

On the subject of fuck-ups. I don't mind 'em, it's part of what they are. But last night B sang Blue Monday like he had contempt for the song, and that's sad.

i was neither at the show, or listened to it. I checked out the setlist, and wondered why they even put a new album out. They only play 3 songs from it. Dont they want to sell this album. Sometimes you dont realize the greatness of song until it is played in a live setting. Sort of like sex in that way.

I agree with one of your prior postings, just play the songs in any format. They dont need to get all technology savy on us. EGG would be good any way.

I think it was mistake getting phil in the band. Its not that i dont likehim, but maybe they should of hired someone that knows their eletronic gadgets. Maybe just for their shows, someone like one of the chemical brothers.

I gotta say, that's a superb Idea....losing phil-in and gettng a chemical brother to do it....someone who's skills go beyond pressing a button, AND who's a fan.

No stayed down there (30 mins to back to Wembley Park station) looking at the new Wembley Stadium from our Travel Inn window. Just pissed off that we got to the area too late to meet up at the Audsley...i even printed AJ's map out. My other half loves Moby so had to watch him...thought he was very good and "Go" always sends shivers!

one of the best sets I've heard from them. yeah there were screwups (BM was NOT one of them), but they confined them to about half of each of two tracks, the rest was awesome.

I mean FFS Barney rediscovered his ability to play lightning fast flawless punkfunk guitar (eg...LV).

As for there gooning around, I was in forum conversation with barney's girl last night and a phrase sprang to mind.....

Whereas the likes of that Bongo fella (and most other star types) go out of their way to cultivate and preserve the myth of their godhood....New Order have just had it grow around them based on their music, and spend as much time as possible trying to prove they are not uberserious rock gods.

WE think they are this that and the other....but THEY think they're just 4 twats what play tunes....most people in bands[1] that are in any way good or interesting are like that, it's only the earpolluting morons who think they rule.

Hearing new order play is an involving experience for me and many others because of this....you KNOW they are just people, like the rest of us, you know you could play nearly as well.... yet somehow, something indefinable lifts what they do far above there level of skill or technical competancy. And that's why we deify them, that "something" that we cannot hope to see or understand in them ( I say in them, because we all have that something, and the only place you'll ever see it is in yourself)....so we equate it to magic and make them gods.

steve - you're spot-on about Barney's guitar playing. I think he's playing really well at the moment, espec noticeable on Temptation on Friday.

Ah the same old argument perfection vs New Order. to me perfection is boring. Try going to a Cure gig. You'd have more fun putting on the cds. Some lige Diggy Mike might even argue that point.

Not having been there, but by what I've heard, and the comments of others who've been there I'd have to say It was a typical good-fun New Order gig. Man I would have loved to have been there especially with the audience singing along (knowing the words better than Barney :D).

Ok, only my fourth NO gig (last in '87). Even accounting for the fact I had my beer goggles on, they were blinding......the missus even remarked how tight they sounded. Shoulda heard them in 85 if you thought Hyde Park was bad Bernard even managed to give a dignified justice to the Joy D. numbers, even although I would have much preferred to have heard Hurt, Egg, the village and IALP in their place.
