Sorry couldn't think of 50.....anyway I tried to refelct reality, but I had to stick JD/NO in the top ten at least.
Keep in mind, I don't care for Ozzy or NWA, but you can't deny their influence on the crap of today

Surely the best lyricist of all-time (his voice isn't upto much though;) )
And surely a very big influence on numerous bands of today

Dylan, The Beatles, The Pistols, Led Zep, The Stones, JD/NO, Radiohead, Clash, Doors, The Band, Velvet Underground, Hendrix, Kraftwerk, Michael Jackson, Ramones, Nirvana, Stone Roses.
Oh yeah, Michael Jackson....pre-child molesting years, I have to admit I was a fan (thought to be fair you coudln't escape him in the 80's. President Reagan made it a national law to buy whatever products MJ endorsed)
Tabsy - I've gotta be honest mate, I've never liked Wacko meself, but there's no taking away the fact, he was pretty influential to a lot of music thereafter;)
Yeah, he owned the Eighties, he was the first black artist to break the rascist early MTV airwaves, and popularized urban music to such an extent that it made it easier for Rap to gain a foothold in its most important audience: middle-class white suburban youth. Whatever else he's done, you do gotta give MJ credit. That doesn't mean you have to like any of his songs, though...

Yeah - agree with that mate.
Unfrotuantely, though, he also made it easier for rap to become mainstream, and whenever that happens to any form of rock music (and yes, rap is an offshoot of punk rock. If you don't believe me ask Jon Savage), it loses that essential element that made it interesting in the first place. There's still some good stuff coming out, and i don't mean to negate the advancements made in the rap world from ten years ago, but a lot of rap today seems watered down compared to the original gangstas.

do you really think it was Jacko that made rap accessible to middle class white teens??? I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one and give that particular honor to the Beastie Boys...or maybe even Run DMC...
JUst remember my first experiences with the rap type thing...and I can't say that Michael influenced my decision to listen to these guys at all...
I am very amazed not to have seen Mr David Bowies' name listed there, what else could be said about this man but definately top 20 material, he is a god!!!!!!
