One thing I love about new order fans is they are about the most critical fans out there. They are are defintely not fair weathered.

This is was very difficult for me to come up with, and i dont think its been done before.

Turn round & round sub culture love vig special

Sunset? That's a new song?

Guilty Partner overrated? I think most people put it in the bottom 3 of Technique most the time.

i've always thought the perfect kiss is over rated by a long shot! as is guilt is a useless emotion...just cause it has a kinda cool title don't make it a good song

i gave it second thought and revised it. Nicos you get a bit snappy at times.

Thieves like us BLT (I like it a lot, but its still overrated) Regret (dito) Most of Lowlife (thats Love Vig, TPK, Sooner, Sub-culture & Face up, I'll take the other 3 any day)

Well, you're entitled to your opinion but I could hardly disagree more!

Turn is my favourite track on WFTSC. R&R is a good album track but a superb 12" Subculture 87 is overdone but try the Record Mirror version before dismissing the song out of hand. LV - Come off it! Special - Have you not listened to the lyrics - for once they tell a very important and sad story.

Each to their own eh?:music:

Ah "The eporial old chestnut" as Barney would say:D

By now on here we should all know that everyone's entitled to their own opinion, just by arguing is not gonnae make people change their minds.

Some of the songs people think are overated are right up there with my favourites.

Sunrise, Love Vigilantes, TPK for starters!

Overrated? Hmmmm let me see.....

I mean I'll take Sunrise as an ace tune off Low-life, but I wouldn't take This Time of Night and Elegia over all of the other five songs. Love Vigilantes and TPK whips those tracks' ass.

TBTHOG 60 MPH Thieves 1963

Only these four for me. It's weird, I've became much more tired of hearing Touched live than Blue Monday. 60 MPH is a good track, just didn't think it was a single. On Thieves, I accidentally played Lonesome Tonight first, and loved that one from the start. As for 1963, that's one NO tune I've just never, ever found myself singing along with when its playing, or being one of those random tunes that I suddenly start singing aloud.

Turn - I agree with you here, although very popular with people from the new album, i'd much rather listen to Hey Now or Krafty.

Round & Round - Disagree, it's one of their best songs, and a highlight on Technique.

Sub-culture - Agree, but this isn't exactly overated is it? The original is quite shambolic, then they reworked it for Substance, and although more polished with better vocals, it sounds horrible. Not great, but the orginal is easy to listen to with me.

Love Vig - No way overrated, this deserves all the praise it gets, really nice song

Special - This isn't good at all in my opinion, isn't exactly overrated anyway is it?

My opinon on overrated NO songs? Hmmm. A while back I saw a thread where everyone was praising Lonesome Tonight. I just don't like the sound of it, rather boring, but maybe that's because I havn't given it a chance, but from a few listens, just not keen on the song.

Leave Me Alone - Again, I just don't like the sound of this one. To me, it just isn't them, it's kind of just dismal, and not exiting enough like some of the better NO songs.

There's quite a few off PCL I'm not keen on. Basically, I like most of Low-Life, Brotherhood is nice, and Technique is still probably the best album. But there all so different, so one minute I would like the relaxation and care free attitude of Brotherhood, but on a more serious note, i'd go and listen to Technique.

And of course, a lot of their best material is from the singles on Substance. Shell Shock, True Faith, 1963. All great classic NO songs in my opinion. I'd say I prefer the electric synth sound of NO over guitar work. Don't get me wrong, I love some of the guitar work also, but I think the group have been more succesful when using synth. And let's face it, their synth work does seem to be more succesful over guitar. Blue Monday (biggest selling 12 inch), WIM (although a bit of a joke, it still got to #1 and is what I call more of a synth track). True Faith, mainly synth apart from a bit of bass from Hooky, and a litte bit of light guitar work from Bernard at the end of the song. Bizarre Love Triangle, another favourite of mine. So it seems a lot of their best music is synth work, in my opinion anyway.

Most songs off of the 'Best Of album' are synth also, so I think that also says something.

hmmm....let's see...

in no particular order:

Crystal (never did get this one...avg at best)

Temptation (good song, but a bit overhyped IMHO)

Fine Time (hated it the first time I heard and still hate it today)

Run (2nd worst track off of Technique)

Confusion (not even sure this is rated high enough to be considered overrated)

have to admit that this list was hard to string together:music:

This thread is a psy-trick... What someone rates highly someone else hates, therefore it's our least favourite NO songs. There's probably someway of deciding on what is a highly rated song, but I'm buggered if I know what it is (apart from sales success; not a good barometer for NO).

Anyway, enough analytical waffle>

State of the nation is my least favorite... ;)

I think a lot of people would include songs that they initially liked, but after hearing it 1000 times over the last 10-15 yrs went off it. Must admit if songs like Crystal and Temptation are regarded as overrated then I wonder what other NO offerings are regarded as up to scratch!!!

Blue Monday (every version) Run (2) Thieves like us Jetstream :evil4: As it is when it was

It seems that some confuse overrated with less favorite songs. Not an easy one, as, if you try to remain logical you can like songs that you may still find overrated.

I would go with Guilty Partner (though I didn't think it was rated so high), Paradise. In general, there's a lot of songs that I find very good and even enjoy much but that, because of some emotional content, are maybe a bit, just a bit, overrated (Everyone Everywhere, Dream Attack, Turn, 1963...)

A bit underrated in my opinion : SubCulture (just watched the PFOD vid and it really sounded amazing)

Less overrated should be Age of Consent, of course as it will never be rated high enough, no matter what.

Turn round & round sub culture love vig special

Er, I would not say that any of these are particularly overrated. I have never heard of Sub-culture being raved about or put on a pedestal. The same goes for Round & round and Special which have barely been mentioned on this board compared to other candidates. :skeptic: Turn is genuinely a good song and so not overrated as is Love Vigilantes IMO. If you'd heard LV live at any of the 2005 dates you'd know why, I don't think there is a single NO fan that was disappointed to hear that song dusted off for the gigs. My overrated five would be:

60 Miles an Hour - Pish choice for a single + played to death live in 2001-02. Close Range - Totally forgettable, how does it go again? Jetstream - Not a bad song but too throwaway and lite. Slow Jam - Pish. Dracula's Castle - Not an awful track but a bit 'will this do?'

I do recall the last two having their own "appreciation society" on Digital Republic, i.e. the general consensus is they're shite, but two or three individuals love them enough to start a thread about them in a desperate attempt to convince us they're actually good. (They failed :evil4: )

This is kind of what I was getting at; How do you define over (or indeed under) rated?

We are voting for perceptions here, or we are voting for our own personal least favourites.

You could only define a 'rating' by sales or aggregate viewpoints. Sales is no good for judging NO songs and the aggregate views of NOOLers isn't definitive - only a teeny weeny percentage of the total NO fan base come here and write an opinion.

i.e. I love 60 MPH and so do quite a few others, how many NO fans love it in total is unknown...

:confused2:

Blue Monday Shellshock Someone Like You Fine Time (although Technique is phenomenal, you naysayers are crazy) Confusion 87 (Confusion 83 rocks!)

craigy wrote: This is kind of what I was getting at; How do you define over (or indeed under) rated?

Pretty simply, a song that is spoken about often by the fans or a regular feature in NO's best of/setlists can qualify as 'overrated'. Candidates would be True Faith, Regret, Turn (had it's 'we want it as a single' campaign), Low-life, Technique or even Everything's Gone Green of late. Underrated would be the non-single album tracks never mentioned from each album like Sub-culture, Everyone Everywhere, Way of life etc. to name an obscure few.

I agree that there is probably only a small percentage of the entire NO fanbase that posts here but I don't think this thread is meant to be accurate to an exact count. I do often think it's important that fans who don't use NOOL either by choice or because they are unaware of its existence are just as important as all the members here, goes without saying really :thumb:

Sorry to muddy the waters, but I quite like Close Range and Slow Jam as well; both tracks that have been given a good panning by many, so they could be underrated as well....:D

Waiting For The Sirens' Call is pretty much the only one everyone on here seems to love, but I can't get into. I think it and Krafty are the weakest tracks on the new album.

Oh yeah, let me add As It Is When It Was. It bores me to tears.

AND, last but not least, the most overrated New Order track ever: Lonesome Tonight. That's just brutal.

So :

  1. Turn - c'mon folks it's not all that. It's a pretty ordinary chord sequence, nice chiming guitar but nowt that hasn't been/couldn't be done by others. Take Barney's vox off and it could be anyone. The greatest NO trax could only be them and no-one else.

  2. TPK - as 10cc said maybe this is just a phase I'm going through, but grand as the soaring arrangement is, it feels a little held back by the vocal melody. Also I do think it has dated a little more than other NO tracks of the same era.

  3. Hurt - I know many folks here love it, but there's something about the juxtaposition of Barney's squeaking vox and a pretty nasty snare sound that makes it hard work for me.

Some of us consider Technique overrated; others (unaccountably) feel that Low-life is overrated. I would imagine there is no overlap between these two groups.

In other words, I think it is unlikely there is anyone here who thinks that both Technique and Low-life are overrated.

If you interpreted that to mean that I thought Low-life is overrated, you were incorrect.

I was disagreeing with the comment that Low-life is overrated, and offering my alternative view, namely, that it is Technique, NOT Low-life, that is overrated.

I recently realized that, although "Brotherhood" is supposed to be my favorite album, I think 85-89 are New Order's golden years and the Low Life-Brotherhood-Technique is quite outstanding. I mean, what a body of work. If you throw in True Faith and even, even though it's a bit biaised as lots of songs on it are pre-85, Substance in it, you have to admit, live shows included that there wasn't much wrong in those years.

i agree with buster that lowlife-brotherhood-technique period brought a stream of quality albums and possibily were new order's peak years. i must make it clear that lots of there stuff before and after that period have still been of a good standard simple fact is that some people on here edge more towards the electronic dance type side of NO,and some more traditionalists lean towards the guitar stuff so there will always be some diffence of opinion...WHICH IS NICE:thumb:

Thanks bansheeman. But one might say that it's anti-new order to prefer guitar stuff or electronic stuff as the very point of New Order is to be both, sometimes together (that's logically when they're at their very best), sometimes separately. But it's when this balance broken that something isn't right. That's my opinion anyway.

Fine Time Blue Monday World In Motion She's Lost Control Regret

IMHO, those songs are overrated by the band themselves.. except for Fine Time they play them all the time of a few times...

Don't get me wrong, those are good songs, but everybody is sick to death of hearing Blue Monday, I'm not much itoo Aciiiiiiid so here goes Fine Time, World In Motion is shamelessly their only #1 song, due to the very nature of the song ONLY... there are so many good Joy Division songs, I still don't get why She's Lost Control gets so much recognition compared to others, but that's me... and Regret, it's a good song, but I heard it way too much so I don't appreciate it as much as I used to... there's something missing.

Anyways, finding 5 overrated is mostly personal tastes... so you get what you want.. I wanted to point out some songs from the recent set lists that IMHO should be alterned by others a few times.. ;)

Only one I can think of is World in Motion coz it got to No1.

The charts & press havent been particularly good to New Order until the press have suddenly started licking their arses.

So, every single song is UNDERRATED.
