Sub-culture

The album version of Sub-culture is glorious but one thing always strikes me about it: is it the only example of Hooky playing a 'normal' i.e non-dnnnnnngngngngn, typically Hooky bassline? It sounds like you know a traditional bassline sounds, sort of restrained and rhythmic and...bassy!

His style is more mid-range than fiercely bassy and I suppose he evolved this so that his notes would not be muddied with any sequenced bass riff. Gillian once described his sound as "high up...sort of honky" so that they two bass elements didn't vie for space octaves-wise.

Ps the remixed single version of this track is...quite grim. All those naff backing vocals and daft runs here and there. What were they thinking of?

agree the original is much better which is the case with most NO songs...Very few remixes of them out do the originals especially in the early days...

REMIXES of temptation sukked

88 blue monday was shit

sub-culture remix was ok but not as good as the original

GIAUE remix had horrible synths

KRAFY Remix it took 7 tries to come up with a viable candidate on this one

jetstream isnt that great but at least the remixes are audible unlike the crappy original

confusion remix was an outright abomination until the pump panel remix came out
