I've just been listening to Lonesome Tonight and noticed something I'd never noticed before: Barney clearing his throat and spitting something out!
Go to just before four minutes on the song and it's there loud and clear. Uck!! Superb song though.

i remember hearing that back when i bought substance back in 1994... so nasty. substance was the second new order i bought and i almost brought it back (i haaated it) until i heard the b-sides and barney spitting everywhere... i was 15, punk was all i wanted... i liked joy division... that moment is probably what got me into new order! very strange. never thought about it before.
He also coughs up a lung at Hyde Park at the end of BLT. Maybe the 2006 album should be titled "Phlegm".
I never heard until now, thanks for pointing it out. And why didn't Digital do that part in their cover of Lonesome Tonight?!

You wanted Tim to spit on you? ![]()
Can't get every little detail right - why do you think there was no gong drum at the end of Sunrise? ;)

Maybe he could've aimed for the guy with the mullet.
And I still haven't heard Sunrise that much, maybe once in the last week to notice the gong at the end. ![]()

There was some weird guy at the Digital gig who danced in front of my view who had a mullet.
And Timmy Mallet was awesome but my memories of him are vague because I'm not old. ![]()
How odd that this should come up. I was listening to LT for the first time in ages at work today. Because I had headphones on, I noticed the spit more clealy than normal. Never fails to raise a smile! Good old New Order - how like them to craft something so wonderful, then gob over the end of it and make it even better! You just don't GET service like that from Coldplay.

Aye.. Awful as toothache, wielding a big pink Mallet.Had a number 1 single did'nt he???The song was gash, if memory serves me...And lonesome tonight is all the better for the gobbing...gritty realism,on top of a majesticaly crafted tune. One of my 20 all time fave songs..![]()
I never heard that as cough... I thought it was a sound effect... Perhaps that was what they thought when they heard it...
"Leave that in, that sounds great. But we have to do a second take. Can you do this cough again Barney?"-"Not sure but I'll f**king try to..."

As I aid in another thread, I think is was the underrated songs one, what other band would leave that in.
Similar idea to leaving the vocal with all the laughing in on Every Little Counts. Did they just think "oh, that will do, the wankers will buy it anyway" or did they think "wow, this is a bit different, get's the mood of the lyric and juxtaposes the polished sound of the music"?
Who knows.
Fuckin hell, it's Fridayt night - who cares?
What am I doing on here - I should be in the pub!
