Youngest New Order Fan

Not now, at the time you first became a fan. I think I was 14. Graham Ferguson I was looking at your profile, I noticed you digged some old Balearic beat and you've liked New Order as long as me and are still only 28, bastard.

Well, I'm not the youngest. I was a fan at 16.

I can look back with pride in myself being 10 when i was introduced to NO by my brother who would've been 15 himself.

1994 - I was 14 years young.

I think Graham is still winning, if my calculations are correct he's 5 years younger than me so must've been 9 at the time. When I was 9 I don't think I'd gotten into my E.L.O. phase so must've still been listening to Shakin' Stevens.

I was 10 and just going into Primary 7. One of the older guys who helped out at the Summer playscheme that year had Blue Monday bangin out of his "Ghetto Blaster" all day every day. Everybody loved it.

Anyhow, come my birthday later that year mum was dispatched to find said tune. I remember the tape the guy had showed me had flowers on the cover. Now we all know that PC&L doesn't have Blue Monday so I was v. dissapointed when mum tracked down the album with flowers on it and it was missing the vital track.

Worry not though. On my birthday day out to Edinburgh Waxwork Museum we called into a wee independent record shop on Cowgate and picked up the classic 12" vinyl which I still have to this day.

To be honest though I didn't bother with them again until Brotherhood. That's what hooked me. And that's why I think it's without doubt there most underrated piece of work.

Anyone explain why?

As always true to his word, Muffy has dispatched a copy of Brotherhood to determine whether previously discussed "muddiness" is merely a bad copy that some of us may have had the misfortune to acquire. If it turns out the "muddiness" is not just bad copying, I would nominate that quality as an explanation for Brotherhood being "underrated."

Can't help you there mate, it was my favourite album for a long time and still one of those that when you listen it after not hearing it for a while you wonder why you don't listen to it more. definitely underrated.

I was 9, my father introduced me to them, and they have been my favorite band since, at first because they were my fathers favorite of course, but I found my own love for them soon after that.

I must be the oldest when I became a fan, then. I was 18 at a freshman at the good ole University of South Carolina when I became initiated with them to the point that I'd call myself a fan. I do rember Regret on the radio back in 93-94, but I couldn't be bothered, what with girls and all....

I am amazed by the good taste some of you guys had at the age of 10. My defense however is that NO (or JD) did not exist yet when I was that age. My favourite bands were Mud and the Sweet at that time. I became a New Order fan at the age of 22 (The Perfect Kiss did the trick).

Been there since the beginning of NO in'80 at the age of 18.

Oy wuz pretty young moyself when oy became a New Orrderr faaan : moy brotherrr had theirr recorrds and oy wuz always playin' them and singin' along with them at the top of moy voice. That was about twenty yearrrs ago oy reckon.... which maikes me....ooohh......at least twenty yearrrs older noww....ha-haarr!!

My addiction started at 15, way back in 1999.

I would have been around 12 13 when i was at my mates house listening to his older brothers records, thats how i got into NO, the Smiths, Cosmic Psychos, The Cure and various indie bands from the mid to late 80's as my mates brother has, and still has, one of the best vinyl collections i have seen in Oz.

About the "Brotherhood" thing, in a recent interview, NO say themselves they think "Brotherhood" is weaker and then they think of all the great songs on it and finally say it's a great album.

Strange thing.

Maybe it's a question of placing in the NO discography. I mean, it's between "Low Life", "Substance" & "Technique", 3 records that, for various reasons, had more glamour to them, don't really know how to explain that...

My thinking likewise - it was a gap of just over a year if i'm correct - the shortest ever interval between New Order albums, and unlikely to ever be repeated of course :D (perhaps that's why it was so underappreciated at the time, maybe punters felt the lp was a bit rushed and sounded unfinished, or maybe many of the songs weren't as strong, do you reckon?)

Well actually it wasn't quite 1963, I lied. First heard JD in the spring of 1979 (Peel session), went out and bought Unknown Pleasures as soon as it hit the shops. I was 13.

I really, really cannot recall when I discovered NEW ORDER.

Quite a DISCOVERY though!!! Still happy with it. Maybe it was a happy monday.

i was 9 when watching totp with the folks and announced to my parents that 'when i grow up i don't want to be a vet anymore - i'm getting married to that man (that would have been mr sumner!)' quite an odd thing they thought at the time - and still did 7+ years later when ever i brought a new boyfriend home cue dad - you didn't meet that bloke from new order yet then! i've resigned myself to the fact i'm not likely to in tamworth either!

Well I was converted when I saw them at Middlesborough Rock Garden in November 1981 (blagged my way in with three of my older mates even though I was only 14 - god only knows what other punters thought seeing us - two hardcore punks and two scruffy skinheads - amongst all the raincoats!!) - I hadn't seen or even heard Joy Division properly then, save for Love Will Tear Us Apart. Even then the Order were very shaky and Barney always looked terrified on stage - their sets were very short then - barely 35 minutes - and they did Ceremony, IALP, and a lot of the Movement Lp which had only been out a few months. I suppose that doesn't make me one of the youngest people who post in here then....sigh.

I suppose my offspring was a New Order fan even before she was born - kicked like she was Hooky clattering those drums pads in Blue Monday, according to her who keeps her warm and fed. Does this mean I win ? And what's the prize ?

The Lamb football ground at Kettlebrook, home of Tamworth FC (not entirely sure what the FC stands for). Rumour has it that one of the team doesn't need to wear a carrier bag over his head when he goes out to the Three Horseshoes in Fazeley :)

Sloppy - i'm afraid it is only a rumour :( - having moved to this one horse town only last year i have still managed to avoid eye contact with the locals for fear they may notice i am female and thus potentially new breeding stock! :happytongue:

Not taking any chances - i'll carry on as i am - word may get out that i have no brothers to share love with!
