Who does the vocals on Fine Time? There's another question too but I can't remember it.

The live version from 1993's fantastic ELectronic Ecstasy (was that really Reading?) has pre-recorded Barry White-esque vocals. Actually I wonder if Barney has sung the lyrics to Fine Time live and also how much of Electronic Ecstasy used tapes??

I know the "You're much too young" part is Bernard, but what about the low part? The part where the pitch is lower, I mean?

There's a Live in Cleveland 1989 live bootleg floating around the web courtesy of a Nooler. I'm 99% sure Fine Time is played (but my mp3s are at home while I'm toling away at work). Google it, download it and check it out...

The Cleveland gig is here. It does contain Fine Time but the spoken word part is sampled, i don't think Barney could ever get his voice down that low.

It's a vocoder! :) Bands had been using it for almost a decade in 1989... when I see him singing that part live, it could be that he mimes, but it seems he really sings, it's just his voice is filtered through a vocoder... you can make of your voice what you want with machines like that... He could sing with cartoon helium vocals, or that vibration effect Cher used in Believe, and many others afterwards, or with the robotic filter used on Ecstasy in Power Corruption And Lies... he just has to filter his vocals...

Another question. At the end of the track you here just the beat and then there is a sample with a voice filtered by a vocoder. Is it correct he is repeatedly saying XTC? In the song browser it isn't mentioned, so i am curious.

It's more likely to be "Ecstacy" as in E, if anything!

When talking about vocoders, I forgot they actually started well before the late 70s - early 80s, when they were just used by many more bands, but just think of Kraftwerk, they started earlier... Thanks for the great Toronto clip... Barney still daring a white shirt! Hooky with leather trousers! What a great performance in fornt of an excited audience... and to think the twats were about to split... what a waste...

Actually a few weeks ago i was listening in my car to the cleveland blossom concert. Fine time is the 14th track and you can hear bernie whisper ectasy, before the vocoder starts with ectasy or xtc :) But on the studio version its hard to hear it.

xtc and esctasy are the same.

To me it looks like Barney is miming to a pre-recorded voice. Could have originally been Barney doing the vocoder thingy.

You can see 30 seconds of it on BBC website (real player low quality) but I remember Barney dancing in circles with a red T-shirt.

And Technique for me is their best album (not considering Substance as an album) but back in 88 I hated Fine Time.

I’ve hated back then. I don't hate it now. But in 88 was a bit complicated to like that song. It was very different from the rest of Technique and it was released as a single after TBTHOG and True Fait and there are no resemblances between it.

I aggree with that. What we hear on this live is so close to what we hear on the album. If the voice is really pre-recorded, I think it's stupid to miming over it. We can easily accept this kind of pre-recorded voices.

For those who missed this the first time he posted, here it is again.BufferLow nailed it. You're listening to Barney's voice slowed down. It's not a vocoder and it's highly doubtful it was done with a pitch shifter. Back in the good 'ol days of widespread analog tape recording, using varispeed on deck yielded these types of results. You play the multitrack back at a faster speed while recording a track, say a vocal track in this instance. When you return the song to normal speed the pitch will be different but still in timem with the rest of the song. This was also a common trick to help a singer hit the appropriate key if he/she was singing flat/sharp or it was slightly out of the singer's range. The robotic sounding vocal pieces are processed with a vocoder.

I haven't listened to the live version but if it sounds close to the album, then it's taped or sampled.

Sound on Sound magazine featured NO shortly after the release of technique, don't know the exact date, but if anyone has a copy of this, (Mine got thrown away years ago, and my heads too fooked to remember it very well), I should think it would answer the question from a very reliable source, ie NO.
