Pilgrimmage to Manchester

I am an Aussie NO devotee who is in Europe on holiday at the moment and I have the chance to visit Manchester next week for a day or two. I´m hoping one of the locals might be able to tell me if there are any NO attractions worth visiting to take the shape of what I would term a 'pilgrimmage'. I guess places like the Hacienda and Factory Records sites are obvious shrines, but are the any other places of interest worth paying homage to and if so, could someone offer some rough directions (i.e are they in the centre of town or fringes?). Also, are there any good record/clothing shops worth checking out in Manchester that might contain collectibles such as posters, t-shirts, records etc? Your help is greatly appreciated! DR

I hope the UK contingent answers, I'd be interested in their recommendations as well, I'll be there too in a couple of weeks.

a few randon suggestions, the site of the Hacienda, and dry bar too palatine road strawberry studios in stockport (is that even still there, does anyone know/?) Ian memorial in Macclesfield- if you are interested in JD they are also nmentioned a couple of times in the punk exhibition at Urbis. there is a video installion, with Hooky and Tony Wilson among others, remembering the sex pistols gig at the lesser free trade er i'll think about it a bit more but its my bedtime now

The Hacienda, of course, no longer exists, but the block of apartments does (also called the Hacienda) in it's place (just round the corner from the Bridgewater Hall).

TBH, apart from the site of the old Factory HQ (and there's probably not much there?), there's not much else that I can think of...

Of course, I may have forgotten obvious places to visit?

As for record shops, take a trip to Oldham Street - loads down there including Vinyl Exchange, Picadilly (Oldham Street also includes the Dry Bar). Just round the corner from Oldham Street is Hilton Street - a record shop called 'Vinyl Revival' which has a fair few Factory t-shirts and posters in stock (although not much vinyl, TBH).

From what I hear there's not a lot left of the early JD/NO history in terms of sites. I believe you can still see Ian Curtis' old house, as well as his grave site.

i'd agree about oldham street for record shops and dry bar. actually,if you want to eat cheap i'd recommend the buffet city chinese at bottom of portland street.60 dishes all you can eat buffet-cheap as fuck.enjoy your trip

Was in Afflecks Palace at weekend. (Go to top of Market St, and hang a left by the stalls). Picked up some tee shirts to replace old uns. All NO, Roses, Mondays, Carpets and a smashin' New FADS. AAAHHHHH! Them were't days.

actually RAIN BAR at the back of what used to be hacienda is built on the site of the long gone brolley factory.hence the name rain bar WHAT A PIECE OF USELESS IMFORMATION THAT IS

I am from Helsinki, Finland. Last year I visited in Manchester.

It was then when there was The Peter Saville Show in Urbis.I don’t know is there still Peter Saville staff or any New Order Peter Saville Show- soundtracks left in Urbis shop. Then there was also New Order books, post cards and T-shirts on sale.

My hotel was on the other side of the canal than Hacienda. It is not the original Hacienda, but they have retained details from original, text typies, yellow and black industrial stripes etc. There is a big Hacienda text in front door. I saw the Factory HQ building. There is still Factory sign left.

I also took the train to beautiful little town, Macclesfield. On the way to Macclesfield cemetary I saw the King’s school attended by Ian Curtis and Stephen Morris. On the cemetory I found Ian Curtis’ memorial stone with words Love will tear us apart. I also visited 77 Barton Street,where is the home of Ian and Deborah Curtis during the Joy Division era, where Ian did much of his writing, and where he died.

There's always the Band on the Wall for a pint of Holt's, isn't there?

i think band on the wall had some trouble with its license or something, shame. a few more suggestions: gmex, music box, electric circus, royce road getting drunk, a lot! whereabouts are you staying david?

be sure to check out some of the local music scene. ACR are playing at the moorfest a week on saturday so theres something sort of New Order related.

Dont bother going to macclesfield, theres nothing there apart from a grave.

Rain Bar is v overpriced and full of office workers....The Briton's Protection, just along the road (Ian Curtis ventured there, so I'm told) is a beautifully preserved old pub with friendly atmos, decent beers and staff etc. Also nearby is the Peveril Of The Peak - all I can say about this place is it is 'unique.' Make of that what you will. I love it.

ive been in that perviral of the peak--emmm HISTORIC,is that another word for it.i liked it too lowlife.all them little rooms,just like the old days.brit protection is a smashing pub.

Britons Protection is one of the finest examples of a classic British boozer in Manchester. Famous for it's massive selction of whiskeys.

Me, I prefer quantity to quality when it comes to alcofuel so I'll be the one guzzling shite australian lager....singing Ceremony with the Luddite Order (non net connected manc order)

places I would recommend are

Corbieres on Police st, just off st annes square. for one of the best juke boxes in town.

as somebody has said the oldham st Tib st area, for some cool bars, afflecks palace and of course Dry Bar for the NO connection. (but just be careful about which bars you go in around there because some of them are dog rough)

go to Rusholme for a curry

and get a ticket for a CITY game

since this pilgrimage has decided to rebrand itself as a pub crawl i am going to applaud the suggestions above and also recommend the sinc for the cheapest pints in town. where is david rowlands anyway?

dont know where david rowlands is but this virtual pub crawl is getting good wetherspoons on princess street does a really cheap double havanna club and pepsi-yummy

Yes, yes, yes... well spotted about the cricket link. Tried not to mention it after we unluckily lost the second Test. Anyway, good luck to Engerland. But honestly folks, I was always going to Manchester anyway to pay homage to the great ones. It just turned out to be bloody convenient that the cricket was on around the same time- a masterpiece of scheduling, I say. Basically, I just wanted to thank everyone who replied with so much useful and interesting information about following the JD/NO trail in the holy city. I told some people back in Oz (including mum), that I have decided to go to Manchester instead of the other option of Paris and they think I'm bleeding crackers!!! They obviously don't have, er, love technique.

To Lucy Anna, thanks for your enthusiastic responses and FYI, I'm staying at a hotel called the Piccadilly Plaza, Portland Street this Sat'dee night with some Ostrayan mates who live in London. Í'll probably stay another night in Manchester but I'm buggered if I know where yet. There's not much room at the inn due to the cricket. To Ronald Kirsch, yes I did work for the ABC many moons ago mate. Geez your memory is good! And to Salford Blue, I'd love to see a City game, as they've always been my 'second team' and now they're my Premier League fancy with my beloved Leeds United down a peg (although mark my words, the men from Elland Road will be back!). A Salford lad just happens to be a bit of a hero of mine in Adrian Morley, chief destroyer in the (once) mighty Sydney Roosters rugby league side's forward pack. i knew you'd be back! careful round portland st, there are some dodgy pubs round there. if you're going to oldham st for the obligatory drink at dry i would also recommend night and day (next door) then onto tib st area for centro, cord and lots of annoyingly trendy bars round there, where i shall be getting sauced myself on saturday night. well i hope you have a good time, and maybe even see you about

Have a good time in our grubby little town, but be wary on Saturday night because it will be busy, what with the cricket and the city game. If you find yourself in a pub full of football fans, and the police start to mill around, get out of there quick, coz they tend to ask questions after cracking your head with a big stick!

public service nooling, i feel all warm inside. we should keep this thread on the front page as long as possible. don't know why it has degenerated into talking only about pubs, but i would just like to add that i don't think dry is a very good place to go on a football night, i have seen some very bad fights in there, riot police and everything. and no i didn't start it. i used to work in a shop opposite, and it could get a bit scary sometimes!

That's right! The shop that used to be upstairs that did an assortment of Madchester records and cool T-shirts has gone now.At least Vinyl Revival, up Tib Street and turn right at lights,does the business.Back catalogues of Wake,Stockholm Monsters,NO,JD,James, the whole bloody lot!!
