Bloc Party dislike NO?

Now I know that Kele was in the NME a while back saying he really thought it was great that NO were getting some acclaim at last, and Hoky met up with them, and said that he liked them, but now he has said something along the lines of:

"If I came out and said what I really thought about Oasis or New Order it would just make some **** headline..."

So whats all that about?

The only thing I know NO have said against them, was a quote from Barney saying he thought they were OK but they had the emotion of "my budgie has just died".

If he does dislike them it's probably best he keeps his mouth shut as he'll be making a fool of himself.

One of them said in that Guardian article with Hooky that seeing Neworder at Reading pushed them towards forming a band. They all seemed chuffed to be sitting with Hooky, so if he has got something against them then he's a bit two-faced.

Top album though. (Which I think I forgot in England! )

I think Kele is just being a jealous bugger which is disappointing as Bloc Party are one of my favourite new bands, but i think you can just put it down to the arrogance of youth.

I think they're OK but I find their songs to be rather similar across the board with not much variety in their music.

You're quite right about that, so their opinion about the guy doesn't really count, does it?

Anyway, according to what I've read about Bloc Party up to date, neither Joy Division nor New Order are one of the bands that each member of BP refers to when asked about their main influences.

Given that both Hooky and Steve have publicly stated their fondness for BP, it seems Barney is enjoying being quite the contrary bar steward these days (reaffirmed by some of the little piss-takes he's been dropping into recent gigs, much to Hooky's chagrin...)

Jeez, that's harsh! Mind you, I think Barney and Kele have really let themselves down here. They should stop the sniping and get on with the music.

Mystery solved

i am only hesitant in this interview because i can see what sort of path he is heading down when he asks me questions about Oasis and New Order (although in the piece he lies about his question and the context, so it looks as if I have some gripe about them). I explained to him at great lengths why I was unwilling to talk about them, because it would be reduced to some sort of sensational mudslinging, and i would prefer to let our music do the talking, or even just talk about the music.

Wow, thanks for posting that link, that really clears things up. I'm always catious about what I read, and I really like Bloc Party. Glad to hear what Kele real meant, it seems to me that new order an oasis are maybe his heroes? Who cares, I'm going to go enjoy some of their tunes now.

To be fair, they really don't sound much like they have a lot of New Order or Joy Division influence on them, do they? Why is it that if any new art-rock release contains even a smidgen of any synthesizer within the span of their tracks, they're automatically pigeon-holed as having a "New Order-y sound". For Gad's sake it even happened to The Go! Team, who sound more like A Certain Ratio smashed together with the Stockholm Monsters in a cheerleader concept album more than anything else.

I've always seen Bloc Party as being a splice of Gang of Four, Blur, and the Cure.

I dont think the bands have similar sounds. Maybe similar attitudes.

Silent Alarm is great though. I'm seeing them next month.

I understand Kele's frustration about his interviews, I studied journalism and I know how it works, that's why I decided I didn't want to be a journalist! Anyway, I like Bloc Party's music. I don't care if they are influenced by Joy Division and New Order or not; this is not one of the reasons that make me like or dislike someone's music!

I've read more arrongancy here than in any BP comment. Have they say NO are shit? No, they haven't – Kele just didn't want to talk about. So what's the problem?

I'd rather an artist not critizising what he or she dislikes instead of arrogant complexed ones who are always telling us what we have to listen or not.

Cracking album and I can REALLY see similarities to very early Joy Division/Warsaw stuff such as The Kill and Walked in Line.

There's a track (I think it's 11) where you can hear the sound of the army marching. Really reminds me of Walked in Line.

Well to paraphrase the great Noel Gallagher, i fookin glad that the twat from Bloc Party hates most of the bands that i like.

I don't really like most bands that have been apparently influenced by New Order... most of them sound nothing like them anyway.
