you're narrowing it down to music (and one very specific genre of music), so i would have to say none of the above. for international importance of living mancunians, i'm rather fond of albert finney (salford!) and ian mc kellen (burnley, but in the region). as far as music i want to say one of the new order/JD boys, but i think it's way too subjective. aw, hell...tony goddamn wilson, then.

as for dead mancs--a tie between ernest rutherford and friedrich engels. neither were born in the city, but were shaped by manchester and did their most groundbreaking work there.

I don't know a lot about manchester, or it history. I only know its put out some of the best bands ever. I voted for Hooky, although I have a great appreciation for guitar virtuoso Vini Reilly. Maybe he'll get someones vote.
