Shoddy Reissues Corner - what has happened to "LowLife's" CD cover?

Has anybody else noticed how the London/Warners re-issues of the New Order backcatalogue look decidely ropey - each CD has the "collection" leaflet inserted into it in some cynical way to promote Get Ready, and worse still, they haven't been treating the orginal artwork to some of these covers with any respect. Most glaring example is "LowLife" - anyone spotted the typography on the spine and the tracklisting on the back printed in a default 'typewriter' font? (the font you get when the correct one isn't loaded up onto the computer). Instead of the original rounded lettering on the older original versions? This lack of quality control is disgusting!! And I'll bet nobody has seen fit to inform the record company of such negligence on their part. Perhaps I'm being too anal - but that's what I'm like when I get any record/CD - I scrutinize the cover and packaging because to me they're as important as the music - and in New Order's case, I'm sure others will agree with that sentiment. Well, what do you think?

Can't really comment personally, as I have a lot of Fall records, and appreciate almost anything that doesn't look like it was cobbled together out of obligation :)

True, I noticed when i recenttly purchased Republic and Brotherhood on cd after years of listening to them on a tape copy of my vinyl, that the cd cases were splattered with that redstripe in HMV. Also Lowlife CD hasnt got as many versions of PK as the my tape copy which seemed a bit of a scam - even more so after the recent cd repress.

How many are on the tape copy then ? My CD has exactly the same number as on the vinyl, i.e. just the edit version at track 2. Am I missing out, or are these extra tape mixes the same as those on the original 12" single, i.e. Perfect Kiss, Kiss of Death, Perfect Pit ?

yea must be the same as the 12" single then, as my tape ends with perfect pit. I remember being distinctly disgusted when picking up the "new" lowlife CD just before christmas in HMV and seeing all these versions absent.

Record stores will continue to rip us off if we keep buying their jacked up products. Buy a cd burner, the original Low-Life LP with tracing paper intact (shouldn't be hard, there are two used in seattle with the tracing paper) and the Perfect Kiss 12" (if you don't already own these) and make your own "digital" copy for easy listening. If these half-assed repackaged albums sell, they'll keep cheating us out of our money by repackaging Get Ready for it's one year anniversary with no bonus material. What we want are the following: Peel Sessions 98 (including Transmission from the Peel Party), Offficial Live Album that doesn't suck, Singles Box Set and the Lamaq Sessions (this will never happen).

The only way a live album wouldn't suck would be if it was a compilation of several years' performances. They could do two, a JD one and an NO one. Now that sets off a whole new thread :)

That's what I like!! Someone who shares the same passionate disgust as I do at these awful cheap and nasty "rip-off" reissues that the major labels are doing with New Order albums - and it IS New Order's back cataloge in particular - that seems to suffer such treatment, it might be a lot of trouble to a many people here -but when I started catching up on collecting my New Order lps onto CD in 1990, I decided that NOTHING but the Factory Originals would suffice. I am happy to say that I have luckily tracked all SIX New Order Factory releases down over a period of about 10 years - hard work but persistance will always pay off in the end. My first CD was Technique cos that was the easisest to get hold of, but the hardest was defintately LowLife, followed by Substance 1987 - which is why i brought up this topic to begin with. And, like You GH I also harbour a similar wish list= maybe we should ALL write many times to the record company and see if the sods will ever listen. (Doubt it somehow)

You are so right Hubert! I noticed the same thing here in the record shops in Holland! Although i've got all their stuff, i just have to look under the "N" whenever in a recordshop! I even noticed a copy of Low Life with the Barneycover, the rest was just Blank/white!!??So where are Steve Gillian andf Peter i ask you?? All i can come up with is that they are poor re-prints of the original CD, just made to support the GEt Ready release! Bastards
