You bastard!

WFTSC (album) Jetstream Retro International

THAT Arial/Helvetica font endlessly repeated...

WHAT WERE YOU THINKING????????

I must admit also that I have been thoroughly underwhelmed by his latest choices in album covers for the past few records...

Item WFTSC (Single and Album 12") 511 316 GetReady

All a lot better than any other could do.

Think about it. Dont diss Saville.

I thought Get Ready and the singles were just OK. They weren't excellent.

Republic and IT'S singles were EXCELLENT!!

Everything about the new album is brilliant except the album's orange and white sleeve. That is, forgive me for saying, 250% gay.

hey lay off the man. Just a guy done good.

I had the same art teacher as Saville at college. Albeit 6 years after Saville.

Herbie Hancock he was called. Well his last name was Hancock so we all christened him Herbie for obv reasons.

I was shit at art though.

But one day we had an assignment to design an LP sleeve. Herbie told us in advance and said he'd be handing out 12" paper and we should bring something in, in which to store it in.

So I brought in an empty Unknown Pleasures sleeve.

Herbie says, "well done Robinson, good thinking, bring in an old record sleeve to take the paper home"

"But Sir, this is by Peter Saville, your ex-student"

"Ahh, yes I could tell, classic Peter"

Fuckin numpty I thought.

I won the art test that week though, a Saville inspired design. I could still paint it now. Went on to my exam and was asked to draw a sea shell. I looked at it and before my pencil touched the paper I knew I'd failed. Who the fuck wants to draw a sea shell?

Easy Money, has gone steadily downhill since the classic True Faith

Considering the subjectivity of art who among us can say that it is not our own tastes that suck?

I believe it was Wilde that put forth the idea that only art that inspires strong feelings (positive or negative) is worthwhile.

And not to go Morrissey about this, but here's another Wilde quote that I think speaks volumes about New Order's music and Saville's artwork:

Consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative.

WFTSC album cover was the worst. How long did it take him to do that? 5 seconds? Everything else by Saville has been excellent, though.

I think the WFTSC album cover is brilliant; some of his (firm's) finest work in years. Certain elements of the GET READY design were brilliant too, such as the green bar on the CD and the Crystal promos with just the red bar on white. I personally think the Helvetica font is brilliant, perhaps the finest all-around font for such austere design. I also love the Krafty cover and like (but don't love) the Jetstream artwork. I don't think he's gone downhill at all - my favorites are still from the late 80s (True Faith, TBTHOG, TECHNIQUE), but I don't think his work has grown worse at all. Of course, this is all subjective, and many people obviously dislike the minimalism of his WFTSC album cover, for instance.

Big fan of Saville and through the years I've always looked forward to NO releases just to see the artwork and of course the music. Clean, simple and at times edgy design, and since NO members don't normally appear on albums, his artwork stands out even more.

WFTSC was disappointing both by the sheer abscence of ingenuity and the misplaced marketing strategy of the cover design, I guess trying to rekindle the Substance cover with a bright orange color that seems to be in fashion these days. As we Americans say 'can't always hit a home run' and sometimes strikes out at the plate.

I think the new DVD release artwork is great especially the cover, his palette has returned with some architectural elements. The object in the middle, some kind of crate or equipment is fascinating.

Saville has sucked big time from Republic onwards.

But..... the new artwork for the WFTSC single is great.

His work for Suede (esp. "Head Music" era). and Pulp has been far better than the work for New order (post republic)

I think it may have to do with the fact that Brett Anderson and Jarvis cocker, respectively, have had some great collobrative artistic input with Saville.

New Order could be arsed to really care that much. They never really did.

I am guessing that doing sleeves for New Order these days may be daunting for saville...a slight annoyance...that's why he's been 'lazy' and just delves into his library of snapshots to find the next New Order artwork, instead of actually coming up with some unique concepts (i.e. like inventing the dichomatic photographic technique for the Substance & Technique ara artwork).

Savilles work for the fashion industry (Linda McCartney, Yohji Yamomoto) and as a photographer is much more interesting than the sleeves he has produced recently.

I don't agree with you. He stopped working with Suede precisely because he disliked Brett's intervention...

As for New Order, everyone knows that at least Barney has an input when it cames to approving final artwork

On the other hand...

with Suede/Pulp, Saville had real concepts to work with, whereas with New Order he gets zilch...

It's easy to say that the work of Peter Saville is boring for the use of Helvetica he did on some record sleeves he designed. I think that to have a wide vision of his art you must consider all he did in the graphic design world: his collaboration with fashion designer like Stella Mc Cartney, McQueen, Yamamoto, with Nick Knight on the seminal website SHOWstudio, the redesign of famous brand like EMI, just to name a few. I recommend to visit the exhibition "The Peter Saville Show", after London, Manchester, Tokyo must be somewhere or buy the book "Designed by Peter Saville".

Post-Republic(ish?) he has mainly worked with photographic images. I'm no graphic designer, but I reckon it would take less time and resources to produce photo-based artwork as opposed to working from graphic-based artwork. Is it not a case of Saville thinking more about the bottom line, now he's working with much bigger clients?

moan moan fucking moan, some folk are never happy are they, the body of savilles work for joy division, new order far outweighs anything by theirs or his contemporarys, (fact)

well, that´s not really accurate because he always worked with photographs but in a different way. Republic, Get Ready and WFTSC eras are more noticeable because it´s clear they´re photos but Technique and R&R were also photos as well as Brotherhood, PC&L and Low-Life. the difference is how he worked with them, which concept did he use. nowadays it´s all about the picture with some photoshop filter and that´s a little annoying. but let´s also remember he´s not the main designer for sleeves anymore, it´s Howard Wakefield. so we can´t blame Saville for everything even if he puts his name on it.

I don't mind his WFTSC cover it stands out as abit of a statement in my eyes the bright No.

when i was scanning over the album charts in my local music shop, that was the only cover that really stood out to me and made me want to pick it up (Although i'm probably cheating because i like New Order and knew what the cover was) but still i think its an attention grabber in certain ways.

But that's the point I'm making, photoshop-type editing is now a piece of piss. Technique photos had much more creative work done on them. Also, Whether its one of his minions or not, it's from the 'house of Saville' ain't it? Not a moaning get, just feel the lack of effort is a reflection of Saville's lack of interest in NO now.

I went a talk by Peter Saville...most boring, awful thing ever.

Such a great designer, then he f*cks up everything with the latest rubbish ones (as listed at the top).

Seriously, at the talk some guy asked as a joke "What were the drugs like in LA?" Everyone laughed at all (probably out of sympathy for this twat). But then Saville gives us a half-hour long answer. We were stupified...

Really has gone downhill of late...

Saville's hit or shit, just like New Order.

Absolutely true! Precisely why I think, nowadays, Saville sucks...

It's so easy, Saville's work has all the focus on the image now. I'm also a big fan of the graphic creativity of the old sleeves, but I really like the images he has chosen: Republic, Get Ready, International, Retro, the WFTSC single... all fookin excellent. About the WFTSC album, it makes no sense to say it took him five minutes, you're clearly not aware of Situationism (huge inspiration on Factory and Saville). Art is not about the effort, it's about the statement. Exactly like with New Order, who made the best music ever moving two fingers on the white keys because they knew fuck all about the black ones. :thumb:

maybe its a comfort zone thing?

he knows they're never gonna get someone else to do the coverwork. so he can basically release anything and they'll use it.

Load of tosh, overpaid faker..New order are about the music to me..Saville is a hanger-on IMO

There was once a quote in Private Eye in the pseuds' corner, by Peter Saville.

(for the ill-informed, Private Eye is a fortnightly satirical newspaper in the UK. The pseuds' corner is a collection of stupid quotes by famous people and the like trying to sound all artsy but coming off as if they have no idea what they're talking about)

The hilarious thing was, it was completely accurate - the kind of thing that fits perfectly in that feature.

"When confronted with doing a record cover 25 years ago, I wasn't doing a cover for a record to evoke the values of a particular song or music. I was saying: where does this music fit into contemporary life? To what niche in contemporary living is this band the soundtrack?"

  • Peter Saville, The Times

The sad thing is I not only know exactly what he's talking about, but I love his work. WFTSC's cover wasn't AMAZING, but I didn't dislike it (very eyecatching, and ironically original even though it's extremely erm.. unoriginal). Item's cover is quite nice, and I like the elegance of Singles. Get Ready is probably my favourite cover.. bah to you all. I just love the feeling Saville lends New Order, it's just like their lyrics - random, meaningless, and strangely beautiful.

Nice text Barney. But still... single's artwork is disappointing

To clarify

The cover for WFTSC was NOT the intended sleeve Saville had in mind. From Mojo Magazine 137 (April 05):

" What I wanted to do with the new NO album was to reconstruct the cover for Power Corruption & Lies but with real flowers. I wanted to refabricate NO in a way that's relevant to their music now. but they were flabbergasted by that"

Personally, I thought this to be a brilliant idea. With the band virtually a verb in defining current musical genres ("we wanted it to sound New Order") why not tap into you own past in creating the future?

I too thought the current cover was crap when I first saw it. Now I love it. Here is a band known for it's defining cover imagery now reduced to the most non-descript of covers ever produced. It's really the anti-sleeve. In this day and age of file sharing and MP3's, who gives a shit what the jacket looks like if it's only the "music that matters".

I believe PIL tried something similar with their Compact/Album release. Genericizing the content to emphasize the music. Brilliant.

Thanks for the flattering comments! Anyway, you do realize your post was all written in the past tense, don't you? That means even you admit that Saville is not anymore the great designer he was... in the past!

is Mr saville trying to say they a Re-hashing old material? surely not

Still, it was the cover chosen (probably by Wakefield and Barney like the others of this year) for the album after the PC&L remake was rejected and before the tsunami... Anyway I don't think the orange "No" as anonymous at all, in fact it grabs instantly the attention of anyone entering a record shop... it's a simple but effective statement.
