People complain about Saville's recent work for New Order and sigh about the glorious past or "edginess".

There was once a quote in Private Eye in the pseuds' corner, by Peter Saville.

(for the ill-informed, Private Eye is a fortnightly satirical newspaper in the UK. The pseuds' corner is a collection of stupid quotes by famous people and the like trying to sound all artsy but coming off as if they have no idea what they're talking about)

The hilarious thing was, it was completely accurate - the kind of thing that fits perfectly in that feature.

"When confronted with doing a record cover 25 years ago, I wasn't doing a cover for a record to evoke the values of a particular song or music. I was saying: where does this music fit into contemporary life? To what niche in contemporary living is this band the soundtrack?"

The sad thing is I not only know exactly what he's talking about, but I love his work. WFTSC's cover wasn't AMAZING, but I didn't dislike it (very eyecatching, and ironically original even though it's extremely erm.. unoriginal). Item's cover is quite nice, and I like the elegance of Singles. Get Ready is probably my favourite cover.. bah to you all. I just love the feeling Saville lends New Order, it's just like their lyrics - random, meaningless, and strangely beautiful.

To clarify

The cover for WFTSC was NOT the intended sleeve Saville had in mind. From Mojo Magazine 137 (April 05):

" What I wanted to do with the new NO album was to reconstruct the cover for Power Corruption & Lies but with real flowers. I wanted to refabricate NO in a way that's relevant to their music now. but they were flabbergasted by that"

Personally, I thought this to be a brilliant idea. With the band virtually a verb in defining current musical genres ("we wanted it to sound New Order") why not tap into you own past in creating the future?

I too thought the current cover was crap when I first saw it. Now I love it. Here is a band known for it's defining cover imagery now reduced to the most non-descript of covers ever produced. It's really the anti-sleeve. In this day and age of file sharing and MP3's, who gives a shit what the jacket looks like if it's only the "music that matters".

I believe PIL tried something similar with their Compact/Album release. Genericizing the content to emphasize the music. Brilliant.

Thanks for the flattering comments! Anyway, you do realize your post was all written in the past tense, don't you? That means even you admit that Saville is not anymore the great designer he was... in the past!

Still, it was the cover chosen (probably by Wakefield and Barney like the others of this year) for the album after the PC&L remake was rejected and before the tsunami... Anyway I don't think the orange "No" as anonymous at all, in fact it grabs instantly the attention of anyone entering a record shop... it's a simple but effective statement.
