I was sat on the trolley in Philly this morning reading the Metro when I saw this.

Actually, Elijah Wood looks a lot like Ian Curtis, the lead singer for Joy Division, who killed himself at 23 and also had preternaturally blue eyes and a boyish face. He brightens. "It's actually weird, because when I look at old pictures of Ian, I see that. You know, they are making a film about his life." We'd love to see him in it.

This is funny (to me) because of all the "omg who's going to play Ian??" speculation when people insisted it was going to be Jude Law.... I said that it'd be Elijah Wood.

It's already started filming though hasn't it? It's a shame. Look at that picture. I really think he has the look of recent pictures of Natalie...

The fact that people might consider a Hobbit playing Curtis is a touch more offensive. Yep, he does have those big blue eyes, but he's surely a good foot too short (they could reverse the effects of the Hobbit I guess, and instead of trying to make him smaller in every shot, make him look bigger, being shot from beneath every time, or stood on boxes). Main problem though, is he's a Yank. How's that gonna work? Curtis was a Northerner. I just can't see any American actor getting that accent right? Or any English accent right? I'm sure even Americans would have to agree on this? Or do you genuinely believe we all sound like Dick Van Dyke saying Mary Papp-ins?

Northern Accents are a lot more infectious than Southern ones in my experience and humble opinion... At least that's how it worked with me living in Mancunia

That said.. the reason I said originally it was going to be Elijah Wood (not because he's a fantastic actor or anything) but because Anthony H. said that they were talking to "Hollywood" actors for the part. Now I know Hollywood doesn't equal American but still.. that was it..

Plus when I spread the fake rumor about it on other forums people got mad and that was funny.

Well Al, if they managed to make Michael J Fox look taller in Causuality of Wars, they can do anything ;)

As for the accent, I can't say if it's possible, but there's one thing for sure, having Elijah would bring more people into the movie due to his popularity.

It's true he's not 6', but the Lord of the Rings made him a "star", maybe not like Orlando Bloom just yet, but you get the picture.

It would make the movie seen by more people, which could bring new fans and, well, more exposure.

I don't know if many british actors can bring that kind of attention, Jude Law would have been a good pick, but he's too old... Cillian Murphy is the other I heard? he's 29 though!

Elija is... 24!

It wouldn't be a bad pick, but I'll let the casting do their job, I also understand that brits would prefer a local guy... but if Darth Vader is canadian, anything is possible ;)

And for the benefit of American audiences, that's cockney rhyming slang that is. Yes, cockney rhyming slang. Like "he's a bit Stoke, he is" - Stoke-on-Trent = bent. Geeddit, innit?

Though by some strange coincidence, in the film they got off the train at Macclesfield at one point, though the chances of there being no taxis outside Macc station are remote to say the least. Presumably this was a little gag about the barren north to appease southerners outraged by the dodgy accents?

Edit: Oh, it was probably also the most overtly homoerotic movie I've seen this year as well. And that's saying something.

well, this picture is quite interesting

the problem with being short can easily be hidden by choosing other short actors, like on LOTR. then it´s just a matter of perspective. in fact ask any NO fan that didn´t see Hooky in person how tall he is and i´m sure they´ll tell you he´s 6 feet tall!

and the accent will only bother brits to say the truth. americans don´t give a damn about it and certainly non english speakers even care less. the goal of a biopic is to tell a true story as good as possible so from that point of view the actor should be from macclesfield but that´s hard to do.

Nah, I've had recent experience of this. Some bird suggested me and a mate get off at Stockport station instead of going through to Mancland recently when I was at a wedding in Didsbury.

Got out at Stockport and, er ... nothing! Not even a tumbleweed!

We must've waited half an hour for any sort of transport to show. This, at FOUR-fucking-PM on a Friday afternoon!

Agreed, on the majority of points, but no-one here is Curtis's widow, nor Natalie Curtis, as far as I'm aware. And, Deborah, arguably, has already done a bit of a 'number' on poorly departed Ian with her book, so perhaps people should also have a pop at her for destroying the myth?!

Curtis died 25 years ago, I'm quite sure Deborah, at least, has learned to cope with her loss by now.

And Elijah Wood is a bit short almost a foot (30 cm) shorter then Ian. But John Sims is 6'2 or so and Barney 5'8, as you can see on 511 Finsbury Park DVD.

Reminds me of that quote in the book adaptation of 24HPP. Right after Ian died people would ask Hooky or Barney where their singer was and they'd say something like "Oh He's hanging around in the kitchen".

Whereas this started out as a chat about the Hobbit playing IC, it has turned a bit ugly with Chris' avatar. I was a bit shocked by it. If that's why you did it then you certainly succeeded with a reaction.

But it is tasteless and unnecessary. Of course there are going to be "jokes" which form relief for taboos, dark humour that we often find titalating. However, there is on this site a lot of respect for Ian Curtis as a gifted songwriter and performer and I do honestly feel a bit sickened by that display. That's not me being precious about Curtis as a fan, its just common decency.

We have all probably been guilty of snide sniping remarks and dangerous comments but that for me goes too far.

Its not often something gets my goat but that has.

You've obviously never seen Gary Oldman act then, or Robert Carlyle, or Robbie Coltrane... etc. (UK actors, not all English)

Some people have a natural flair for accents, some don't. That includes actors. And Edward Norton can do a passable English accent, as can Meryl Streep (if she tries hard).

Elijah Wood playing Ian Curtis? I can’t see it myself. Mind you, they could have a lot of fun if the Lord of the Rings cast re-assembled for this new movie. Sean Astin as Hooky!
