No sitting on the fence here. This came up as I was listening to Krafty because I realised I had no idea what the lyrics were about. After the chorus, I found myself listening to the music again and I still can't tell you what that song is about (can someone tell me please!)

It is difficult to separate them sometimes, but I try to concentrate on the music wherever possible. I don't know the words to this day for many songs written up to 25 years ago, which is a bit of a pisser when you consider I get paid for singing them!
Mind you, Bernard doesn't know them either, and he wrote them ;)

Interesting that 100% say music. My girlfriend knows the words to songs within about 2 listens and I think most girls are a bit more like that. So, the NO are a blokes band is proven! Smug look
One ear to the vocals, one to the music. God's reason for giving us two ears; that and stereo surround sound.
First listen, both at once, but as I listen to it more the lyrics become less important and I start to pry apart the layers of music.. the music always is more important, though. Some damn fine New Order instrumentals around (Kiss of Death, Elegia), and let's not forget Hooky when he's let loose..
I've had this debate with many a NO fan.
I'm 90% NO - 10% JD.. and a music man.
pals that rate JD more highly tend to listen to the vocals/lyrics more than I do.

LolYour Rack is shocked,your musical taste is exquisite tho ofcourse.. With any song it tends to be the music that hooks me ,If I'm not liking the sound,I don't give the words a chance.Often I will hate lyrics in songs and love the music,but never the other way round..But Vocals have to be at least agreeable.Many a good song has been ruined by vocals like Billy Coragan

the music. i've gone for years misunderstanding the lyrics of some of NO's songs, but i still love them anyway!

I think Barney Army once said that the best New Order vocalist was a "fookin'" six-strings bass. I agree with him. It is the first thing I pay notice when I am listening to a New Order track for the first time.

this reminds me of a comedian i saw on TV who brought up a similar point. his theory was: ask any guy to sing 'purple haze' and he will launch into a dramatic air guitar solo. ask any girl and she will sing the lyrics 'purple haze, all in my mind.'
growing up, my friends and i would sit and scrutinize all DM and NO lyrics. now that i'm older, detailed simplicity has flown out the window...it's the music!
As a foreigner to the english language, I was borned and raised with music I couldn't understand the lyrics.. so it's stil a reflex nowadays.
So the lyrics don't mean anything to me, the voice is just another instrument part of the music... as simple as that.
So it's hard to split both.
I can't help scrutinise the vocals and the lyrics which is why I find the new album so difficult to digest. Musically it's up there with their best but lyrically it's pants.

It's my first wedding anniversary tomorrow. Vapour Trail (as covered by Trespassers William) was our wedding tune. Awwwwww..... 
Always the music - im one of those people who could sit for hours with the headphones on listening to a strange plinking noise, right in the back of the mix - thats why i still prefer the vinyl idea - all the sound is there if you want to listen.

I agree, hence back to my original post, when I tried to listen to the vocals and understand Krafty, I gave up.
